They just hate male sexuality, and this is the blatant expression of contempt. However if there is any secret agenda here, it is more likely involving preventing husbands from watching porn. Their wives will know about the filter.

The fact that there are so many people watching porn is just another reason the filter should not be turned on by default.

The status quo of porn policy is very simple: don't ask, don't tell. There is nothing wrong with this policy, and there already exists ways for people to filter their internet.

Default Re: UK Will Soon Be Blocking Online Porn

Personally, I don't care for pornography at all, as I can (and do) certainly have a fulfilling life without it, but that's not really my concern here--it's about that fact that whenever some government-enforced restriction (even if people can choose to opt out of this one in this case) is implemented it usually starts out as unobtrusive enough, then creeps to the point of resembling socialist regimes, much like what seems to be happening under the US under the Obama administration right now (albeit not so centred around pornography).

What I find incredible is how the British government (or rather the Conservative Party) is going out of its way to "protect" children from supposedly innocence-violating material when it doesn't exactly employ the same attitude towards equivalent physical magazines in shopping stores, which are often in close proximity to physical magazines designed for children and preteens. Okay, so they're usually placed on a higher shelf, but so what? That only serves to put them out of reach, not out of sight. And how short-sighted this whole idea is: as if pornography is the only means by which children can be stripped of their innocence. How about placing some restraint on newspapers, TV and adverts for a change (arguably more damaging industries). Oh yeah, that's right--that's not going to happen while those industries are funding your elections.

And Let's not forget, this is the same government that pretends to endorse matters of health and the environment in one hand, while allows corporations that endorse their exact polar opposites (smoking, alcohol, fast food, etc.) to sponsor the British Olympics and public services like the NHS (Please explain to me why there's a convenience store that sells cigarettes and alcohol, and a Costa embedded in my local hospital...). Sad fact of the matter is, if everyone did the "right thing" such benefits would not have had the requisite funds in the first place.

Now I'm not opposed to the idea of protecting children from harmful material per se, but it seems that whenever the British government implements some law or policy that's seems to be for the benefit of people, the true motives behind them are often selfish and never really about social well-being at all. Isn't it funny that pornography on the Internet has been as much an issue since the '90s, yet only now the government thinks its time to "tackle" the issue. It strikes me as so convenient that recent policies, such as the Bedroom Tax, critical benefit caps, increased fees for unfair dismissal claims, so called NHS efficiency measures, and of course, the latest attempt to divert pornographic content so that people won't be able to access it so freely as the Internet allows (and in due course, rely on the more expensive means imposed by big-name publishers) is all consistent with the governments obsession with saving money. And for what? For the benefit of most people? Oh please...

How dare you Mr. Cameron? By all means, protect children from harmful content; but don't you DARE insult the British people's intelligence and use the "vulnerability of children" as a weapon to excuse ill-thought policies that have nothing to do with protecting children in the first place. Otherwise, my question is simple: Why didn't you implement this before?

Well they did ban the tobacco companies from sponsoring sports like football (soccer) and cricket as I'm led to believe, but yeah there are many worse and easily accessible material that kids can get and look at. Heck just look at some of the garbage that's shown on tv...

They have been lobbying to completely cover up those "Lad's Mags" with opaque plastic covers, saw it on the news and Yahoo! a few days ago. I know so far they've gone as far as to move them to the top shelf, and in some stores place obscuring plastic tabs in front of them so you can't see what's behind them unless you're tall enough.

... I know I'm nitpicking on one small point like I'm a massive supporter of the conservatives, I'm not. They haven't really done anything good for this country - Cameroon or Plebb. This thing is just retarded though, especially when 'suspicious DVD trays' in small local newsagents, TV adverts and newspapers are taken into account.

What no one wants to admit is that it isn't really children that are viewing the porn. It's teenagers. Teenagers love porn. Not all of them of course, but most do. The responsible thing would be for parents and schools to have a frank discussion to teenagers about the reality of pornography. But screw that! Porns icky! Lets get big daddy government to block it so we don't have to worry. Derpity derp!

In a time of financial troubles, where we are having to cut back on our health services to keep afloat, the UK government sees fit to implement a multimillion pound porn blocker? A porn blocker that, might I add, won't even work?! An add blocker which will be thwarted within a minute by a horny teen who understands how a google search works! WTF has happened to the conservatives? I'm sorry, it does honestly seem like they have lost there god damn minds. Think of all the money we have wasted. More than that, think whats going to happen when there are private information leaks from the chinese company that will be filtering the ALL of the UK's data. Oh yeah, they forgot to mention that? Every citzens internet traffic will be filtered through the chinese firm "Huawei" who's reputation is less than adequate. Even if you reject the filter, Huawei will still go through your data.

Honestly, part of me can't wait to hear the amount of moaning whenever the public realises how useless the block will be. Also I wonder how many conservative party members have friends/donators/shares in Huawei. Huawei donated large amounts of money to the lib dems and conservatives back in November of last year.

If you don't mind me asking, why are you voting for the UKIP? They just seem obsessed with immigration to me. Is it there stance on the EU?

    And poor children.

Please sir, I want some porn.

    made me smile.

the ban will work on dumb 13 year olds who wanna jack of in the living room when their moms are asleep and who don't know how to set up a secure vpn, which i suppose, according to the transcript, is the purpose of the ban.

"protecting children" by limiting their experiences is a pretty shitty way to govern. the extreme version of this mentality is locking your kids in a small room and only letting them out to poop and eat.

Porn filtering doesn't work. Google filters porn related search terms. Just because certain terms are filtered in the search queries doesn't mean the search results don't exist. The moment you enter the search results for a porn-related search term, you will be welcomed by PORN. hahahaha Google already uses a useless porn filtering software and these sexually-paranoid Brits are wasting money on another useless porn filtering software. Money should be spent elsewhere.

No, it's the sexually-paranoid government that's wasting money.

To be fair though, it's in an effort to crack down on genuinely illegal porn, such as child pornography, which everyone can agree on is a bit beyond the line as far as things are concerned.

I was just being a bit snarky, but Labour never really did anything, last election I voted lib-dem (can't remember why) and they got the coalition government with the conservatives and look how that's going. To be fair immigration is a bit of a problem, though. They need to start sorting this crap out like Australia does.

... then again Australia has the advantage of indiscriminately trying to kill everybody there on a daily basis so =/

The government doesn't have the technology to take down illegal sites that host that material. Plus they censor plenty of things with internet search engine filtering technology.

    Did I say they did?

No, I didn't. I was just saying they are making an effort. It's pretty much impossible unless they pull a China and pretty much let us only use a UK-local Internet with no possible connection to anything beyond the country ... and then that's a massive violation of privacy and freedom of use and human rights and all that crap. Not to mention we'd probably just get round it ... I dunno ... by using Satellite Internet connecting to a German relay or something.
