Best and Worst of 2011

I don't think there are many more games coming out between now and 2012. So what are some of the best and/or worst games you've played this year? They don't necessarily have to be made this year, so your call. I suppose demos can count as well.

Best:
Skyrim (yeah, I`m a Bethesda fanboy, but it is great becaus you can play it for 200 hours and still not be bored and still have lots to do, or you can start a new game as another race and be a diffrent type of characther. A game this massive is bound to have glitches.) xD
Portal 2 (I don`t really have to explain why).
Uncharted 3 (The graphics are beautiful. The map in mp are unique, fighting on trains, on trucks and having to get on a huge plain and more.)
Dead Space 2 (I liked this better then the 1st, becaus the 1st had those annoying mini games, argh :P It was still very exciting to play, paranoid all the time xD)

Worst:
El Shaddai (Haven`t played much of it, but from what I played I tried the english dubbing and it sucked, the subs were out of sync too and it has probably not been fixed. The art in it is quite cool, but not enough to not end up in this list.)
I don`t buy many bad games and I can`t judge a game without playing it right :P So only El Shaddai.
Duke Nukem Forever (of course it`ll be here)

My opinion on the best and worst of this year and yes, I did play all these games.
Fun facts about me: I don't sleep at night and I was bed ridden for 2 months. I also don't have a Wii so I don't judge Wii games except for the ones I played.

Best.

Cathrine.
A puzzle game that simulates hanging out in a bar with your best friends , discussing life , drinking beer and eating pizza? Oh, yeah, the murders and that manic chick you accidentally slept with trying to take over your life.
It's one of the few games with an honestly mature storyline in recent history. I appericaite that. Honest to goodness maturity in games? Discussions over violence?

King of Fighters 13. They actually managed to fix everything terrible about KOF 12 to the point you can actually believe that 12 doesn't exist anymore.
Smooth characters, smoother controls, excellent all round. Except for the online, which is still lame whenever you play against Japanese people.

Saints Row 3.
It was missing a hell of a lot of content, hell. It only takes 6 hours to beat the game. The engine was improved, but sadly. It was only a fraction of what Saints Row 2 had to offer. Compared to everything else released this year, any game that is polished and working deserves additional credit. Seriously, it's one of the few recently launched games that wasn't totally broken out of the box.
SR3 is only up here on a technicality, as it has the required amount of content, improvements and changes that the other games listed in worst lack. That said, I will remind you, that it is still only a quarter of the content of Saints Row 2. Sadly, DLC has been "Seasoned" just like Mortal Kombat, Uncharted 3, Battlefield, MW3 and so on. This is why gaming is dying.

Infamous 2. They improved the controls, they improved everything about the game. Essentially what a sequel should be. The new characters were interesting, the returning characters were given more personality, the powers and targeting was improved- Newer mini games and user created missions keep the game fresh for longer than you'd expect.
Sadly, the fire/evil powers still suck.

Infamous : Feast of Blood. It's Infamous 2 except the Evil Powers don't suck anymore. A good stand alone DLC game that's compatible with the user generated content feature of Infamous 2.

Warriors: Legends of Troy.
It's great if you needed a Dynasty Warriors fix with some good ol fashioned Greek Oddessy mixed in. The game functions like any old regular dynasty warriors, except it has a unique art style filter. One on One duels, improved lock on features, parries and an equipment system that will get you hooked for the duration of your Dynasty Warriors addiction. It's also a great retelling of the siege of Troy, right down to the minor details that most movies leave out. They did their homework making this game.

Worst.

Socom 4
I'll be blunt. They too gave into the stupid COD craze. You know, one of the few shooter games I respected outside of MAG, Bad Company 2, CounterStrike and Arma gave in to the pressure and created a run and gun arcade styled shooter.
They even did the COD crap of removing the lobby system where people could search for the type of games they wanted to play. Now it's just like COD.
People join a lobby.
The Game selects a host.
Lobby becomes meaningless afterwards.

Even playing in Classic , you can still taste the corruption. No more Breach, Escort, Convoy or Extraction. What have they done?!

Modern Warfare 3
Quite literately Modern Warfare 2 with a New Hat. As it was last time. Honestly, the least they could do is add dedicated servers. I try to play online and between people whining and the horrible, horrible internet connections. It's utterly irritating to see MIGRATING HOST the moment someone starts getting upset they're losing.
The story mode has become so hackney that for a good portion of it, all you have to do is press forward to win. The online still suffers from the same old balance issues but just like Modern Warfare 2. The only shining part of the game is the Spec Ops mode. It's still pretty good, but the split screen is still terrible. They couldn't fix that?

That's it. Everything else is a total waste of time and money.

Battlefield 3
I honestly couldn't tell it apart from MW3 this time. Both games are exactly the same aside from the vehicles and even then, BF3 is so much more close range orientated than ever before.
That aside, they managed to screw up everything good about Battlefield by replacing it with the run and gun action of COD.

Then guess what ? The game was buggy out of the box, surprise! They said the beta would fix everything. Oh, boy. Game Launch and people are still crawling through the ground, hiding in walls and generally exploiting every little thing they didn't patch. Then to be jerks, EA banned people from the game. That's nice, faulting the players for using stuff that you didn't patch for a good month and a half.

The Story Mode was.. God. It was terrible. The last time a Battlefield Story Mode was good was Bad Company 1. The characters had personality, they had souls, they had humor, they had something to say for everything you did. The game even had some wit about it.
But now, it's just run from point A to Point B, go outside the dotted line and OH NO YOU ARE GOING THE WRONG WAY TURN BACK.
What happened Battlefield, you used to be cool.


Uncharted 3.
Okay. What the hell happened between Uncharted 2 and Uncharted 3? Did they fire everyone who made U2 good and replace them with people who only watched videos of U2? The entire game is a as step backwards from U2. No real content, just a bunch of promised DLC like all the other" major" games this year. No real reason to replay it - the only thing to look forward to is the survival multiplayer mode and even then, it's just not as fun as U2's modes. Oh well.

Dead Island.
Despite all the hype, the game was as buggy as Fallout 3 when it was launched. I have videos on youtube mocking the game. Hell, they could have caught alot of these glitches by simply playing the game. But nope. They just shipped it incomplete. Yes the environments were nice, but there was nothing to find. Yes, the damage system was interesting, but when all the zombies scale with you there's no point in getting stronger. Just speed run through the game. A terrible , nonsensical ending, DLC and the game randomly deleting your save data quickly made it the worst of the year to me.

Dark Souls
God damn. They ruined a perfectly good series by focusing only on the multiplayer aspect of the game. I decided to send it back to the rental place rather than wait for the patch to drop. Then the worst part? They reused so much of Demon Souls that they could have just called it Demon Souls 1.5, newbie edition. The bosses were reskins and they weren't even difficult like Demon Souls bosses.

And the cast of Dark Souls.Nobody is memorable, most of the characters are direct reskins or in the case of Patches. A direct transplant from Demon Souls. Oh let me elaborate, the game was clearly rushed this time. How exactly does your testing department miss major game breaking bugs triggered by simply using the items as normal? They don't. If they had time to test it, that is.

Duke Nukem Forever.
Yeah. It needed another 20 years. Gearbox was already a lack luster developer that hasn't done anything that isn't a repetitive suck fest since Half Life, so why did they pick up a game destined to the bargain bin?

Crysis 2.
Congratulations. They successfully ripped off the entire plot of Metal Gear Solid 2 and stole sequences from MGS 4 without anybody noticing. It's another Generic FPS with terrible enemy programming. I really enjoy that. The enemies would lock up while moving, the game would get wonky for no reason and it was just plain boring. Which is a shame because the commercial was a thousand times better than the actual game.

L.A. Noire.
I expected alot from this game. What I got was a watered down, politically correct version of the 1940s where everyone has a smile. Women and Negros are treated with respect and you can look a cop in the eye and say YOU CAN'T PROVE ANYTHING YOU RAT and HAH YOU'LL NEVER PROVE I DID IT without getting smacked in the mouth or arrested on the spot. It quickly turned repetitive , the investigation turned into random guessing once you reached the half way point and the grading system was just plain silly.

Fable 3.
I played it 2011. I was very upset that the entire game could be beaten with just magic. Then I was even more upset when I discovered there was an achievement for doing the game without dying.
At this point I wondered, you could die in this game? Without following a strategy guide I managed to completely bork up the economy until I had 88 trillion gold and was completely bored with the game. Some of the sequences were okay, but yeah. This wasn't worth renting.

Ar Tonelico Qoga: Knell of Ar Ciel
I just could not tolerate this. I turned it off during the second battle. I have tolerated Trinity Universe. I have tolerated Red Seeds Profile/Deadly Premonition. But I just couldn't tolerate the atrocity that was Ooga.

Skyrim
Rented it. If I had bought it I would have snapped the disc in half, defecated on it and mailed back to Bethesda as a thank you for their consistent quality of games.
They haven't released a game that wasn't buggy out of the box in more than decade and I honestly expected more from them. Serves me right for thinking they could actually beta test their games before shipping them.

I mean honestly, how exactly do people think this game is good again? It's the shining example of everything wrong with gaming this generation.
Lifeless characters, huge worlds filled with nothing, boring quests and plots and errors everywhere. Oh, but there are DRAGONS THIS TIME!?!?!ONEONEONE
Seriously ,no amount of dragons could cover up how terrible Skyrim is. Not even Puff the Magic Dragon riding Blue Eyes White Dragon, giving a high five to Shenron while singing the Double Dragon theme song while the Dragon Tales dudes play a solo on a guitar could fix this game.

But that's popular culture these days. The standard of good has dropped to below zero.



Dynasty Warriors Gundam 3.
Bad news : Less characters. Good news : New Characters like Unicorn Gundam and Improved online. Bad News: Still the English version is lacking the amazing custom soundtrack made for the Japanese versions of the game. Right. This is the third time this has happened. The music really makes the game and this was sad. Good News: At least, they had the option for the japanese voices this time- Because apparently, alot of the American voice actors don't do gundam properties anymore. Why would they do this to fans?

Mediocre
Shadows of the Damned.
A six hour long penis joke. I am not kidding. From Big Boner, to Flaming Boner , the dirty jokes keep on coming. Yes, you'll find it hilarious, but eventually. It just gets tiring. The character design is meh, another demon hunter with a magical weapon fighting the forces of darkness to reclaim his love. That's surely original. Anyway, it did have it's moments like the Side Scrolling level , a couple of the book sequences because illiteracy is funny kids! And it takes jabs at Catherine, Evil Dead and Gears of War.

Killzone 3.
This game was borderline terrible. Yes, it had some improvements. But it totally took a crap on everything Killzone 1 started. It had a good storyline when it began, now.. It's just kill everything, hide behind a wall till your health regenerates.. Just like every other shooter on the market. The control system was improved but the storyline was.. Why would they do this? In the end, I can't talk about it without holding my head and sighing. KillZone 2 is still the superior game.

Dead Space 2
Just like Dead Space 1, it's as about as scary as filling an It- 150 form. They went all out on being gruesome, and just totally shifted their way into comedy. When I first played it, if you remember the chatroom that day. I spent a good 40 minutes stomping on corpses. Issac, now that he has a voice makes the funniest noises and he never gets tired of stomping. So you know what that means?! MOSH PITTTTTTTTTTTTT!!!!!!!!!!
Anyway! The new creature designs weren't anything special, if anything two of the newer creatures were sheer annoyance. Dead Space already had 1 exploding enemy. Two more is just over kill in my opinion. And then there were creatures that only attempt to hit you in the back, stand in a corner and suddenly, they're the easiest things to beat in the game.

Dead Space Extraction
This technically goes up as one of the better games. It came with the Ps3 version of Dead Space 2.
They vastly improved upon the Wii version of the game. Newer audio, improved controls and graphics. Surprising, it was very m very good.

Hyper Dimension Neptunia.
Good Grief the Game. Chock full of injokes, customizable combat and more injokes that only die hard fans of the many companies represented in the game would even notice . Neptunia takes it's place as a game for those with extremely high tolerance. Overall, I'd say the game should be marked as one of the worst of the year. But the only thing saving it from that pit is the dialogue. It's funny, that's it.

No More Heroes : Heroes' Paradise.
Exactly the same as the Wii Versions. Except with more blood, vastly improved graphics and jiggly naughty bits. And by exactly the same, I mean there was a cutsequence that cracked a joke about the rating of the game while it was on the Wii. They didn't change that sequence to reflect the fact the PS3 version was rated M not T like the Wii version. The game is surprisingly dull when rendered in high definition. To be technical, it wasn't a render, it was a filter as you could break it if you moved fast enough in game. The DLC costumes and viewer mode were , yeah. Lame. But if you had nothing else to do, this was alright.

Best Games You've Never Played or Heard Of.
Lair of the Evil Doer, a roguelike, dungeon crawler available on the 360.
No character creation, 40 random levels, plenty of weapons , enemies and guns. Great for a buck.

Trinity : Souls of Zill O'll
I loved this game. Even though I made fun of it on my blog, I adored the hell out of it. Not many games allow you to preform a neck breaker on a Griffon or allow you to suplex a Giant.
An action/rpg in the style of Dynasty Warriors and Dungeons and Dragons. Despite the looks of the characters , it actually manages to avoid almost every RPG cliche in the book. Except for the secret dungeon, where they lay on the Cliche's extra thick in there for fun.

Gemcraft Labyrinth
Play it. Find out. This game should be the new standard for Tower Defense. As for Corridor Defense, I'm too tired to argue with people.


In my opinion, this year was OVERALL one of the worst years of this generation. I am also greatful that I have a Gamefly account to help me avoid wasting my money like I did last year on 360 games that I never played again.
If I had to rank all the platforms on how good their games were this year, it would be the following.

1. PS3/ Wii- A bunch of decent releases on the PS3 and Wii this year offset alot of the garbage released.
2. PsP - An amazing bunch of games released on the PsP this year - Too many in my opinion. I'm not for damaging my eyes staring at tiny screen during an100+ hour game damn it
3. PC, almost nothing but RTSes and decent flash games this year.
4. 3DS, alot of the stuff is repackaged from the N64, which is good and bad. Too many titles that are either terrible or I personally don't care about at all.
5. Xbox 360- At this point, I cringe whenever I look at the 360 section of games. I don't want lame shooters, I don't want Kinect games. I didn't buy a Kinect back when it was Kinetics on the PS2. I'm not buying one now. There's almost nothing for people who don't want to play shooters or kinect games available.
Even the alternatives like Otomedius are just embarrassments to the previous games in the series. Then, the continual payments of XBL for a service that doesn't give me anything for my continuing patronage except advertisements and stuff I could do on my computer.. I don't see a point in even owning a 360 anymore.

The Sims 3 Generations - For a $40 Expansion Pack, it's horrible. It's so overpriced. Most of anything that puts it into the EP category was given away for free in the patch. What you have left is a Stuff Pack. Stuff Packs are already massively over priced at $20.
The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D - It's a remastered port, not a remake. I love Ocarina of Time, but OOT3D is so cheaply done that it makes this OOT fan sad. Updated textures and models for Link are not $40, and that's all the game is.

Dead space 2: I shouldn't need to explain this too much, I happen to be a large fan of the games as they seem to be fairly solid to me in this generation. Of course I'm kinda indecisive between part 1 and 2 but still i think it all goes to a matter of gameplay preference.
Catherine: just a favorite, I had a good time playing it especially since i started out on hard.
Portal 2: Do I need to explain?
Worst:
Duke Nukem Forever: With the amount of time between announcement and release it was bound to fall short of the hype. Really It never had a chance especially with what was released.
(Enter Generic Sports Game Here): shouldn't need to say anything on this, i just dislike the genre.
(Shovelware #XXXXX): Yet again fill in the blank and there it is.
I think Michael Phelps had a game released recently, i could be wrong and it could come out next year but either way Swimming and Kinect just can't mix well. o_O

Some of the best ones I've played this year are

Hyperdimension Neptunia
Why: Contrary to what a lot of people have said about the game, I heavily enjoyed it's take on a world based on the game consoles. It was intriguing and the humor in the game was solid. The voice cast was not too bad either

Catherine
Why: A solid puzzle game, and the collector's edition I bought was not too shabby either. The story line was both interesting and heavily changeable which were both pluses for me.

Atelier Totori
Why: I have been a huge fan of the Atelier/Mana Khemia series since I played Atelier Iris on the ps2. Totori is just so darn cute *_* her and the game are. The artwork and the soundtrack are really pretty too. If the battle system was a little better this game would be nothing short of amazing imo.

MLB 11 The Show
Why: It's the best baseball game you can buy, plus it's one of the FEW sports games that actually switches things up from year to year instead of just a roster updated game.

Record of Agarest War Zero
Why: I like tactical RPG's. You don't see very many on consoles anymore. Most moved to portable systems and I don't like that =_= they hurt my eyes and the agarest series is pretty good.

Good Games

Skyrim
Why: I have the ps3 version. Enough said. Other than that, it's not a terrible game at all.

Ar Tonelico Qoga: Knell of Ar Ciel
Why: Get rid of going through the same maze dungeon like 15 times and the game is pretty cool.

Bad Games

Madden 12
Why: I wish I could jump 6 feet in the air and intercept a pass. Pretty sure every NFL team would want me. Seriously, the day a player that's 5'10" can outjump Megatron for a ball ONE HANDED AND CATCH IT, oh and btw hes rated like 55 overall with 77 speed and 31 catch *i looked up this linebacker*, is the day I will sacrifice a live pig and dance naked to the rain gods.

El Shaddai
Why: I didn't even think this game was pretty. Not in the oooo pretty kind of way. It was pretty bad though =/ I played it for like an hour and I was done.

So many people are saying Pokémon has run out of ideas for Pokémon, and that they have no new ideas for the franchise, but I think the Pokémon PETA styled idea worked wonderfully in this game.

Skyrim
A lack of a decent gradient between easy and hard to kill creatures made this game poor. One hit to kill a wolf and one hit kills you from a giant, was what made this game poor. In the early levels, you find yourself never having anything decent to fight, and when you find something challenging, one hit can knock you out of the map. It's lacking a lot, and the only reason I'd continue to play it is because I'm laughing at the glitches. A glitchy game with nothing to kill, at the end of the day.

Disgaea 4 (This game totally improves the whole series while being able to bring new things to a massive game. I have played every disgaea game)
Ico and Shadow of the Colossus. (A repackage of two of the greatest games of all time)
Worst:
Every frelling sports game, except the soccer ones.

also I love Fallout waay too much to like that game with rims (can't say what i usually refer to it as as this forum is PG rated) it's just New Vegas but without the Assault Rifles and super mutants
