I think it started in 1991 with Vampire the Masquerade. There have been numerous editions since. And setting in different times as well as covering maybe a dozen different sorts of supernatural critters or mages or whatever each operating only somewhat aware of the other types.
Oh. The RP I played was with normal users in an art website's forums. It was an impromptu thread where a random story evolved. The OP might have got her idea from one of the World of Darkness systems.. The game started in 2006.. then it ended around 2008 when people stopped posting.
I've thought about role playing before, but I'm worried I'll compleatly suck.... (hehe ^^'')

What bugs me is when someone is so bad you need to guide them in the roleplay so you can actually continue. I remember back in 2010 I tried a Rpg on another site and I typed FOUR paragraphs, and the next person replied simply saying: ..sits next to him.. ......... I mean, effort?

Listen, it often happens to me that I write a lot and in return I get little or at least significantly less. So what? Writing stuff is fun for me. I sometimes go 6-7 paragraphs long. My partner responds with 2. Am I getting mad? Of course not.
That's because I enjoyed every single one of the paragraphs I wrote. And I hope my partner(or partners, if it's a group) enjoyed reading them. I don't expect them to match me. I just hope they had as much fun as me when they where writing their replies and that rp will keep going smoothly and cool.
duh
Occasionally I do. Recently I've been off role playing for a bit but now I'm slowing trying to get back into it. Most of the role playing I've done is on AF, I find it's more friendlier and entertaining environment. Some of the RPGs here are well thought out.

A lot of the people that have joined my games have indicated it was their first time doing an RP. So you're in a forum with a lot of other new players. People should expect that and be very tolerant of it as well as helpful.
Which of course means the other don't necessarily know what they're doing either, so I think having an active and competent GM is more important on AF than on some other forums where you can just get the players rolling and almost walk away.
I think of that as an expectation setting thing. Forum RPs are vulntary every step, and sometimes someone just has a moment or is on a phone. I think the key is setting expectations. I've you'd rather wait for a long post, than often it's just a matter of them needing to know that.
My attitude is that any post is better than no post. And I often encourage people with writers block to make a little post like that just to signal that they're still there, active, and interested, but they've got no idea what to do.
I find out of character communication helps a lot on these sorts of things.
I'm assuming this particular RP was on the forum and not in a chat?
Because if it WAS a forum post ... seriously, I would have that other poster wedgie'd. That's not even lazy ... that's just pointless. They have all the time in the world - no deadline, nobody waiting on them like in a chat RP - and they type four words? I'm sorry, but ... no. Even my FIRST RP POST was longer.
Of course I can understand that some people just aren't as good at RPing or as creative, and I'm not just being a hypocrite. I can RP good, but I often settle for one-paragraph posts unless it's on a forum. The reason is to limit unnecessary information and to keep the RP moving at a good pace, since it's in a chat and therefore your RP partner/s are there waiting for your response as opposed to a forum post which can be done whenever you want and you can take your time on. I've RPed with people who struggle to type more than two sentences. I've concurrently RPed with someone who insisted on typing a novel chapter's worth per post in a chat-based RP, and I ended up complaining that I didn't particularly enjoy waiting 40 minutes for a response due to how long it took. I respect the skill of others and I often try to scale myself to their standards (a shorter RPer will get shorter posts, someone who posts longer and with more detail gets longer and more detailed posts ... I've always been that way), but coming in on a FORUM RP and typing four WORDS? I expect more from greetings posts in Intros.
I'll end my rant now. :l

It was a forum post. I agree with you 100%. It is pointless and shows me the RP is pointless and a waste of time. I agree with sunny, but only if I feel the other poster is interested. Writer block is fine, though having and showing no effort is different. Idk how I can enjoy a RP only Im interested in!

Yeah, I roleplay with my friends all time and it's fun to come up with characters, locations and situations for it.

Yes, I use to be very active in forum RPGs. So much fun.

I tried once, but never liked it.
And I wouldn't want to do it IRL either, since...
There isn't really to do it with, so yeah.
Agreed, it has to be something mutually agreed to. I don't RP when I don't find it enjoyable (granted, in long-running RPs there will be moments of 'writers' block' or 'filler' but those don't count, really). Similarly I don't RP when others I'm RPing with don't find it enjoyable.
There are days where I don't feel like anything; on those days I simply and honestly state I don't feel up to an RP, simple as. I don't see the point of taking part in something I know I'm not going to want to put effort into.
... Typing this also warmed my hands up. Yayzers.

Every once in a while during RPs that I'm involved in, it comes to my attention that my posts are significantly longer than most others in the thread... I end up wondering if I take the storytelling aspect too seriously....
It's way too easy for me to get caught up in developing and planning how I want my character(s) to act, that I don't pay much attention to how much I've written until I've already posted.

I do, but only through D&D. Forum rps just don't provide what I like in an rp which is reaction. Posts give players time to think. Besides that 99.9% of rps here last a week and are dead. Sunny's is the only one that bucks that trend and even then it's only posted in every few days.
