I think you're talking about "sore o te ni shitara owaru yume o mita".
owaru yume wo mita I'd literally translate as 'I saw a dream that ends/finishes'
Personally I don't see what's wrong with a "dream with an end". You can argue the intention route if you'd like though.
If you wanted the dream to be "ending", it'd have to be imperfective, which owaru is not.

I would actually tend to parse it, with reference to the preceding lines, as "I dreamt that [my journey] would be over if I could obtain that [courage]" ([それを手にしたら終わる]夢を見た, if you will) but if you want to parse it as それを手にしたら, [終わる夢]を見た, then yeah, there's nothing to say that it should be "ending dream" rather than "a dream with an end".

Surely then there's a fair difference in meaning between if you cut the phrase or if you don't...
Times like these, I wish that brackets like that were a common part of written language.

Might be a bit off-topic, sorry for that, but how are brackets handled here on Anime-Lyrics?
    Are they forbidden or allowed?
I remember using them for the Japanese Test, but I'm uncertain about using them in actual translations....

Oh my goodness, all my translations would use "(the pair of us)'s" if that's the case because, as it turns out from a long googling session, making a phrase genitive is not defined in English at all.
However, I think it's clumsy having brackets in the translation unless the song's a real mess so I'd say you should avoid it. Perhaps paraphrase to make it make sense- after all, English doesn't work like Japanese does in terms of how prepositions and the like work.

You know that makes a lot more sense. Maybe change the lines to "I had a dream that courage is waiting in the place we're aiming for / And when I obtain it, this will end" ? But I'm not sure that the sudden tense change makes good sense in English. or maybe "all of this will end"? I hate to use "all of this" when the original line doesn't say that exactly, but I get the feeling that 終わる is in reference to the struggles in the first two lines (and perhaps the "journey" in general as you said)

This would be a good place to use brackets but I really hate doing that. I'd rather come up with something that flows in English.
9 years later, I've finally stopped being sleepy...

    Done!

As for the use of brackets in lyrics--I use them here and in Lyric Discussions when I'm extrapolating a little bit because when we're discussing the mechanics of translation I think it's best to be clear that I am in fact extrapolating and not leave people going "huh, wait, where are you getting that word from? It's not in the original line!" For a translation submitted to the site, I would just drop the brackets even if I didn't change the wording. They are not, however, disallowed.
