I'd like to believe the noise I heard under my bed is a ghost rather than rats. I'm pretty sure its rats though... Thats what I get for living in a 200yr old barracks.

Alright i believe in them, no matter how many lies ghosts tell, I personally think that each and every one of them still maintains a shred of credibility.
Its in my nature to give ghosts a second chance. So yes, if the ghost tells me he can stop scaring people after 58 years. I'm willing to believe in him.
Well I grew up in a haunted house across the street from a seminary so ya I believe in ghosts.
In my time in that house I have experienced more than my fair share of paranormal activity both the easily explained and the impossible.
From weird sounds, things turning on and off by themselves (witch is super annoying when your a gamer) or moving by themselves to full on specters watching me from the other side of the room.
There is no doubt in my mind that ghosts exist.

I want to say no because I am a skeptic through and through. However, I have heard a LOT of convincing stories from people I know well. I have also seen photos and I knew the photographer. So I suppose I can't completely disbelieve....
I'm not sure whether I believe or not, but I did experience something one time. I was asleep, and I was pretty sure it was a dream, but it also felt more real than any dream I ever had. I woke up suddenly and I couldn't move, it felt as though something were holding me down, and I could see some sort of shape, it was like see-through, with its arms holding me. It didn't have the shape of a human, though, maybe more like a demon. I got so scared that I couldn't even talk, the only words I could muster was "I won't get up" because I had the feeling it was telling me to keep down. After that I woke up for real, and nothing was there and the sun was out, if it were still dark I probably wouldn't have had the courage to get out of bed. I like to believe it was only a dream, because dear god I hope I won't have to experience that again. Talked to a girlfriend, I had at the time, about it and she was conviced it was a ghost or something like that. Not what I wanted to hear, but it is what is it, I suppose. I guess I shouldn't fear them all that much, but it gives me a shivering feeling everytime I think about it, and thus I don't watch scary movies.
So in truth I don't want to believe, but something also tells me they might be real.

@Riverflower that is not a ghost, what you experienced was Sleep Paralysis
but what is really creepy about that is that people have said the exact same story that you did, about that person/demon holding them down in the bed, there's even a name given to it which is "the old hag"

@Riverflower i can confirm it was definitely sleep paralysis. you're definitely not the only one to experience it. it even has its own wiki page. i used to get it all the time as a kid. i'd wake up unable to move and i'd see things. everything from gargoyles sitting on my chest to 10 foot buddhas looking down at me. sometimes it was benign but other times it was very frightening, like sometimes i'd see dark shadow figures coming at me. it's actually the source of a lot of abduction stories, some people see aliens in the room with them.
That is reassuring. It only happened to me once so I never really thought about searching on the internet about it. Just talked to my girlfriend back then, and figured she could be right
Yeah, I remember seeing a show on TV about those alien abductions, but I don't think they mentioned anything about sleep paralysis. Well, maybe they knew about it, but they just wanted to make the show more exciting, who knows?
So I suppose you out grew it?

i haven't had an episode in several years so yeah i think so. really thankful for that because even when it wasn't a scary dream, it was still really unpleasant.
i'm surprised you only experienced it once, in cases i've heard of it recurs frequently. for me it was at least once a week.
Must have been very unpleasant if it happened that often
