I don't know why girl would be the correct translation instead of person. It would also be more gender-neutral if person is used.

This website gives a large amount of freedom to translators as to how they want to translate, be it literally or liberally. In the case of this song, while it is merely my opinion as someone who has never watched the anime or heard the song, it seems very likely that the わたし is indeed female. When directly comparing あの娘 and わたし, it makes sense to me to phrase them both in the same way in English. As a result, this comes under 'liberal translation' territory. If @bluepenguin thinks differently it can be changed.

I agree that it's within the bounds of what's up to the translator's preference. It's pretty clear to me that "わたし" is supposed to be female, so while it would be more literal to use "person," it's not actually incorrect to say "girl."
