I used Windows 7, vista, xp, 2000, 1998 and 1995 so I am a huge windows fan. I've only touched Linux and Mac a few times in my entire life. I am sticking to Windows 7. It is my favorite OS by far. Very sleek and easy-to-use interface. 8 tries to hard to be a smartphone and fails at it.

    Default Re: Favorite Operating System

I wouldn't say that I have a "favourite operating system" in particular, since I haven't really used any operating systems besides Windows--although I do use Mac OS at work, but then only really to run 3rd party software; I don't really use its built in features.

Windows is what I grew up with, so what I'm most familiar with. I have Windows 7 and despite the fact that it's getting on a bit (as Microsoft would have me believe), I don't feel the incentive to use any other OS as it fulfils my needs (and then some) just fine. So as long as Windows 7 continues to serve my interests (which won't be changing anytime soon), I'll likely be sticking with "Windows" for many years to come.

But like I said, I don't have a favourite OS as such. I use Mac OS at work and prefer that to Windows when it comes to running industry-standard 3rd-party software (such as Photoshop), as in this case, its ability to handle such software is more important to me than its ability to run built-in features. On the other hand, I prefer Windows over Mac OS when it comes to using built-in features, as they seem to be more flexible over Mac OS in general use terms (as when surfing the Internet, listening to music, or answering emails for instance).

So I guess it's fair to say that in terms of general use, Windows, if not my favourite is at least my most preferred operating system. However, while I do like Windows 7, I don't necessarily like Microsoft, nor do I like most other versions of Windows. I'm probably going off topic now, and the following may come off as a rant; but I'm going to say it anyway, because, topic relevance aside, I think it needs to be said:

While I do think highly of Windows 7, I have to say that its successor, Windows 8 (even with the 8.1 upgrade pack) is quite simply an awful product, what with its childish interface, elusive Start Menu (before upgrade) and compatibility issues. It seems that when it comes to releasing Windows, Microsoft deploys some marketing tactic in which several bug-laden versions are released before a version that's actually worth paying for makes an appearance.

The buggy versions are typically riddled with distracting "features", which seem to come off as feebly-applied concepts rather than integrated tools of any real benefit to the consumer. The version that is worth buying is essentially a refined version of its buggy predecessors and usually hits the shelves between every 3 half-assed versions or so. In other words, the wait between 2 quality Windows operating systems can be as long as some 15 years, and for a paying consumer like myself, that's simply not acceptable.

For example, Windows 2000 and Vista are effectively unpolished versions of their superior successors, XP and 7 when you get down to it. Vista rightfully got a lot of flak for its numerous bugs caused by its new security policies and compatibility issues, but fundamentally it wasn't a flawed product, as Windows 7 is pretty much a refined version of it, sharing pretty much the same features as Vista, but with far less bugs and compatibility issues.

As for Windows 8, well it simply feels like Vista all over again, and smacks of yet another indicative example of how Microsoft puts its own needs before that of its consumers. Windows 8 certainly looks pretty, and to be fair, is considerably fast--but unlike Windows 7, these positives seem to have been given priority over meaningful performance and wide compatibility, factors which (arguably) are more important than tile size options and boot speeds.

Every time MS releases a new Windows with some sweeping new interface, I start to have reservations about the effective quality of the product--because except for Windows XP, every OS that MS has released under a new interface has been compromised by either problematic bugs or compatibility issues. In the case of Windows 8, it's almost as if MS are purposely over-promoting its visual qualities to deliberately draw attention away from that which matters most. Funny, but this sounds pretty similar the same tactic incompetent games publishers use to draw attention away from the core matter of gameplay with their video games. Conversely, Windows 7 did not fundamentally undergo any new interface change over it predecessor and still managed to qualify as a quality product.

I wouldn't be at all surprised if another 2 or so "versions" of Windows 8 (dressed up as Windows 9 and X of course) will be released before the refined version of the same product surfaces. This is why even though Windows generally remains my most preferred OS, I won't be going anywhere near Windows 8.

For lols I leave you with what I think pretty much sums up my opinion of Windows operating systems:

I'm a Windows fan myself, been using it since 3.x. I have 7 on my current PC, and 8 in a VM. If I'm going to use UNIX/Linux, I usually use Debian. I don't despise OS X, I just never use it because I refuse to spend the money on Apple branded products. As for hating Windows 8, it's basically Windows 7 with a start screen instead of a start menu. If you don't have a touch screen interface, just learn the mouse commands. It literally only took a hour to get used to it. Also, just in case no one knew yet, 8.1 is only adding back the start button, but not the menu. You would still need to re-skin 8 if you really want the old start menu. (Or just right click in the lower left-hand corner.)

    Linux - easy choice.

The last version of Windows that didn't run like a snail was Win98SE.

Mageia Linux, PCLinucOS or Knoppix is a lot less hassle.

Only Windows users need to buy an anti-virus.

And who ever heard of a 'Windows-live' ?

OS X Mavericks is alright, but feels a bit laggy compared to previous models. But hey, at least the OS update was free and didn't have to pay an extra $20 or so. I liked Mountain Lion and it functioned pretty well. I don't use my computing for gaming so and like many others on this thread who prefer mac, I use it for video and audio editing. It's more in tune with my needs personally and professionally.

I grew up on Windows and loved it between 3.1 to 7. Vista and ME I was not fond of big time. 8 is not PC friendly IMHO and difficult for me to navigate. I still love 95, 2000, and XP though. XP and 2000 were certainly the best versions for me. OS X has a good lay out that's also easy for me to use. I am pretty much one of the few members of my big family and circle of friends that is a total Apple convert (also have an iphone, ipad, and ipod touch) so it goes pretty well with me. I like the appstore and the creative programs for it. I use iWorks and glad it can be converted to Microsoft Office files. I use my iPad for work and also use keynote so the Mac version is just as useful to me as well (in addition to doing all my checkbook balancing on numbers between my iphone, ipad and mac).

I'd go to using linux If I knew literally anything about the OS. I'm stuck using a Windows 7 home premium OS on my laptop.
If Macs didn't have such godawful support for gaming I'd have gone with one of those.

Grew up with Windows like most, but in the last four or fives years (can't remember exactly when I bought it) I have been using Mac. I was persuaded by my husband's best friend who worked at a Mac store back then saying that I would get a lot more for my money for a better price and not having to worry much about viruses and such because they don't tend to attack Mac OS? He gave me his employee discount, got me a wireless keyboard (which is absolutely awesome) and helped me install Windows XP on it as well so that I could continue playing the few computer games I had. I don't think I'll ever go back to being a Windows user, tell you the truth. I'm much more used to Mac nowadays even if I haven't learned everything with the programmes that comes with it (I don't care for garage band and the other media programmes) but that's all right.

I have noticed that my computer is getting slower at loading pages or programmes, so it might be time to upgrade to a newer Mac Mini. I'll probably do that once I finish with my studies though, as a graduation present to myself. I plan on keeping the one I'm currently using and use that for Windows games and the newer one for every day use. I'd be upset if it was no longer possible for me to continue using Windows since it's the only way for me to play the Sims 2 (yes, I'm one of those people ).

For creativity such as graphic design, photoshop, adobe creative suites, can't beat the Mac OS's.

For businesses, Windows 7 Pro takes the cake. Windows 8.1 is way too much of a learning curve at this point.

Home use, I personally like working on Windows 7 Pro for daily but I have a Windows 8.1 hooked up to my big screen that I play movies through. Definitely has more media apps.

Linux was my first operating system when I was a kid but I didn't know it much later when I use Windows.
Out of all windows, Windows 7 is my best choice. Currently using Windows 10 which is so-so. Not very up to the features of it.
Mac? Well. Let's just say I stick to the basic.
