Rocket launch that did NOT go as planned

Did you see that Antares rocket? It wet up, then fell down and blew up. News story can be found on a number of web sites. Here's one of them:

Most websites use RTMP or something to stream it that isn't directly viewable or downloadable via the browser (they usually only work in the custom-made SWF Flash app that is designed to play the video stream from that site). The NYTimes site however has a directly linkable MP4 video file (though I they probably didn't intend it to be played through any means other than their video player on the news article's page). Here are the direct links to the video file (one for 480p, one for 720p, and one for 1080p).

Not sure how long these will work for before they becomes dead though, as these video URLs that are meant to be played on-site via the site's own video player Flash (SWF) app tend to be automatically regenerated every once in a while.

I saw a YouTube video of this earlier. It blew up in mid-air along with the money, effort, hopes and dreams of many. R.I.P Antares.

looks like not only NASA got screwed but also this start-up called Planetary Resources, which had cargo on the rocket as well intended for research into mining asteroids. Orbital will have some 'splainin to do to NASA, although NASA is also to blame for outsourcing its missions to private companies. the article says the first two Orbital rockets reached the space station without incident, but the addition of a new type of second-stage rocket could have been to blame for the explosion. SpaceX, another private rocket company, seems to be the beneficiary of this failed launch, i see Orbital losing its contract if it can't provide a reasonable explanation for the accident and show that its rockets aren't going to explode next time.

i'm just glad this flight was unmanned. NASA and Orbital would have been hung out to dry if someone had been killed.

Yeah i saw that, There's been a lot going on with NASA this month. All these rumors about NASA confirming a 6 day blackout in December because of Solar storms, then the Jack O' Lantern sun (Which actually was really cool). The solar storm blackout was a hoax according to NASA. They confirmed that it wouldn't happen but who knows...
