Default Things at conventions you cannot stand.

Here you can post stuff you think should not be at conventions. So far, I've been at two conventions this year, and sometimes, I'm reminded of my pet peeves when I'm there.

    1] Critical/Judgmental people towards cosplayers.

This is my biggest pet peeve at conventions. These are people that think you must fit the character 100%, and not be fat, ugly, or look like a total nerd to cosplay. I like the skinny sailor moon AND the chubby sailor moon. The cosplayers are there to have fun, not to be judged. Those naysayers should have spent their money on something else instead of a convention badge.

2] People using live steel as props.

By live steel, I mean real blades that are out of their sheaths. Seriously, I think I saw 5 people with real katanas walking around the con. To me, this is like walking in a convenient store with a live firearm. Put those things back in their sheath! I don't care how skilled you are with a blade, it is still an obvious hazard to people around you.

    3] Blocking traffic.

Conventions are a cesspool of like-minded people, so I always expect several thousand otaku every time I attend one. Because of the huge attendance, many traffic ways are blocked by poorly placed gatherings, photo taking, and people standing and talking. It should not bother me that much, but sometimes it does, especially when I am on a hurry somewhere. I mean, the traffic flow is so obvious, but people still block them. Sometimes, I "force" my way through or say excuse me to people. Seriously though, get the fudge outta the way!

People trying to save seats, especially when there is a limited number they can fit in.
In my opinion if they don't make it in time, too bad.

I've only been to one convention, and my least favorite this was having multiple panels I want to attend that were happening at the same time

@OP's #1, you could always to to cosplay someone closer to your size... Like I'm short and skinny, so if I were to cosplay, I'd try to pick a character similar to me in size.

Live steel, really? That should be banned. In Australia they are pretty on top of that sort of thing, all 'weapons' are inspected prior to entry. One con I go to recently banned 'Free Hugs' signs and 'glomping' due to several sexual harassment complaints. I was very sad and angry to hear that kind of behaviour had been taking place at my fave con!
I guess one thing I don't like is when you ask for a photo with a cosplayer, which I only do when I find someone cosplaying from the same series as me, and they are stand-off-ish. I mean if you are not prepared to be noticed and spoken to by fans of the same thing, then why cosplay?

It's not even Australia; I think most conventions have rules and regulations on this not per convention rules but per public venue rules. All weapons have to be inspected and tagged at my convention. Security will most certainly stop you if you carry a potentially dangerous weapon around. You can buy swords at the con but they have to be stored at either the weapons booth or at the conventions "lockers" for a fee or put in your car/hotel. You're not even allowed to carry the box with the sword in it around. I don't know what kind of con Alber is attending but it's probably poorly managed ._.

My biggest pet peeve really is just taking up a lot of space like sitting in a big circle in the middle of a high traffic area. Or really just being in the way in general. Move off to the side plz.

Also if you have a large cosplay don't sit in the front. I'd like to see around you. So maybe towards the back is better for something extravagant like a huge hairpiece or something.

Nothing against dub fans, but I've heard stories from friends that dub fans tend to stick together at times and bash sub fans and make fun of them for liking anime in subs. I'm sure only 5% of them do it, but its pretty damn pathetic.

If it cannot protect you from a crowd, how do you expect it to shield you on the battlefield?! The weapons of the cosplayers should be used for testing so that when the time comes, you can feel confident in the protection provided by your Lara Croft outfit!

It sounds to me like you think theres something wrong with that.
On a legal level, I don't. Here in illinois, specific people can conceal and carry. But that also means I'll be alert around said people.. unless I chat with them for about a minute as to why they have gun in public. I'm easily startled, so once some crazy guy starts bustin' bullets, I hope he does it far away from me.. Because my adrenaline will make me a serious problem to him at close range.

The con is called Anime Midwest. They have staff trained to follow protocols, but the problem is that there are few volunteers. And with 8000 people, can 10 or so staff members really keep everyone in check? Nope. They simply need more volunteers.

So you do have a problem with carrying a loaded firearm into a store?
Cuz that post didn't really say anything that any other person wouldn't feel. A vast majority of people don't exactly carry weapons in the hopes of using them.

That's still the cons fault though. You don't even NEED volunteers at that size. My con quit taking random volunteers about 3-4 years ago and now with 10K+ people they have sufficient 'volunteer' staff that works every year. Staff has about 20-30 people for security only and not to mention anyone else on staff such as someone in registration who could easily act as security and find/grab someone asap. The con itself is responsible for having sufficient staff for the number of attendees it has.

(was on the convention staff for 3 years)

Cuz that post didn't really say anything that any other person wouldn't feel. A vast majority of people don't exactly carry weapons in the hopes of using them.
Again, legal level, no. By that, I mean I won't complain about conceal/carry. Personal level, yeah. I don't show my ”problem” with it, but I share this same feeling with the vast majority.

The con itself is responsible for having sufficient staff for the number of attendees it has.

Anime Midwest is fairly new, so they have problems here and there. Anime central is the other con I attended. Now this one is doing it right. More than 20,000 people and regarded as the largest anime convention in the midwest.. With little or no problems during the weekend, from my knowledge. I can agree with you and your points, but I still believe that a good number of staff is key to avoid many problems. During Anime central, I spotted at least one staff member anywhere I went in the venue.

M9 is a semi-auto pistol. You're probably thinking of a M4. And if I had to pick a gun that I truly love, it would be a 1939s mosin negant. Super cheap and pretty damn powerful. And also the first gun I bought with my own money. But for a weapon to carry with me while shopping, I find a M9 baretta more than adequate.

Yeah, I was thinking of M4.
I've only been familiar with 9mm a long time ago. I've fired only airsoft guns recently. I've never fired a real assault rifle. Smart to bring a pistol on public places, I've seen people bring hunting guns to Mcdonalds. Lol.

The one thing I absolutely cannot stand at a con are immature cosplayers.

To be more specific, cosplayers that trash a convention center, run around in the halls for no apparent reason, touch/glomp/harass other cosplayers without permission.

They just really get on my nerves. But I tend to avoid them the best I can. And most of the above happened at the last convention I went to. I didn't witness some of it, but I did see some running through the halls just because, and I heard stories about some trashing the convention center. *sigh*

[QUOTE=Albear;2828405]Here you can post stuff you think should not be at conventions.

I'm not sure if this has already been said - but the title of this thread made me laugh. What can't you stand? Standing....I highly dislike line cons...where you legit feel like all you do is stand in line the whole con..even with VIP passes.

Also, not as big of a deal, but when I cosplay and people come up for pictures without asking. It sometimes creeps me out ^^; I have no issue with photos, but at least let me not have my mouth open or something silly. - Not as big of an issue though haha
