Who are your favorite disabled characters in anime? These are characters who have what can be classified as a disability; that is, anything with the potential of interfering with a normal life, even if it does not interfere with a normal life. This may overlap slightly with the Top 10 Mentally Ill Character thread I started some time back.
Here are my choices, in no particular order. Post your own and say a little something about that character. Maybe later I will rank my favorites in order, perhaps using one of yours.
Violet Evergarden from Violet Evergarden. She’s an emotionless killing machine used by the military. No, it really isn’t that kind of anime. With the war over, Violet has to find a new life – with two robotic arms to replace those she lost in the war. She goes to work for a mail service writing letters for those who cannot express themselves. In learning about humanity, she becomes a different Violet.
Kaori from Your Lie in April. Everybody is rooting for the tragic Kaori, and everyone is about to get their heart broken. Suffering from an unnamed disease which is destroying her body, Kaori still pursues her interest and love of music, while saving the soul of Kousei.
Shoko from The Shape of Voice aka A Silent Voice. This is the only movie on my list. Shoko is the new girl in school, and she is totally deaf. Still she is friendly and outgoing, but she is also unprepared to face the bullying lead by Shoya. Eventually things get so bad that her parents take Shoko out of school. Years later, Shoya’s life is a mess when he is reunited with Shoko. Things are different this time.
Fujiki and Irako from Shigurui. Fujiki has one arm, and Irako is blind. Still both are master swordsmen about to duel to the death.
Tatsuhiro from Welcome to the NHK. Here’s the overlap with the Top 10 Mentally Ill Characters list. Tatsuhiro suffers from a variety of emotional and mental disorders, including paranoia. This has made him a recluse who never leaves his apartment. But there’s this young high school girl. . . .
Nunnally from Code Geass. Poor Nunnally has been exiled by her father the Emperor, although she still lives in luxury with her older brother Lalouch. But Nunnally is also blind and confined to a wheel chair, even if her ailments do turn out to be. . . . No, spoilers here. She still remains cheerful and hopeful, and when the world starts to crumble under Lalouch’s rebellion, she is strong enough to take action.
Your turn.
