aye, contract work does kinda leave you in a state of limbo where you're uncertain about what to do when it's up. i've only been working 6 months of a 2 year contract, and i plan on sticking with it til the end. the pay sucks, no benefits but i can easily get 60+ hours so that's the sticking point for me that makes me want to stay. plus i work graveyard which is perfect for me, i've never been happier at a job.

Yea, they're cutting out overtime here, but 40 hours a week isn't so bad either. I only liked 60 for the pay not the labor. The new job will have OT but they'll do the same as the current one is with that OT.

ah, that's a good reason to bail. OT keeps me content with my finances. i'd be broke without it.

I feel ya. Luckily my job is paying enough so I don't have that issue, but there's a lot of play money that goes out the window without the OT. Even if that money was goes towards my savings... Still I'd rather not get too dependent on OT, being as the hours still suck balls for the work I do...

I just started working for a company called Ampac about a month ago. We produce flexible packaging, this plant in particular manufactures frozen food packages.

It's a pretty crappy job. When the printing press is running my main job is to package the finished rolls of packages [heh] and palatalize them to be sold. I also have to keep an eye out for anything wrong with the prints, and take samples for every roll printed. Between printing jobs, we have to change out and clean parts to the machine, as well as grab new inks. It's sweaty, dirty, and you smell of ethanol after you're done, since we use it for a variety of tasks.

Since I'm new, I'm essentially also an errand boy, and a janitor for the machine operator. My operator is a douche nozzle, and as such barks orders whenever he can, loves the sound of his voice too much, and is one of the reasons I'm looking for a new job.

That being said, money is pretty fantastic. However, 7pm-7am shifts, coworkers I can't stand, supervisors looking to cut me, layoffs happening, back breaking work that leaves me smelling of alcohol after I get out, yeah, hoping one of the places I applied to calls back. I even miss retail at this point.
No power in the 'verse can stop me...

I work as a telecommunications-installer, a lot of my work revolves around climbing up Telecom-masts (usually 40m+ tall) and installing antennas and all the other zim-zam that goes with it (cables etc.) to give 3G/4G coverage to an area.

Really like my job, loads of travelling, awesome views (a lot of these masts are on top of mountains), and an overall fun job, except when the weather is bad.. You can imagine climbing up one of the masts when there's 10m/s winds, and you're standing on top of a giant, swaying mast

Only worked here for about 6 months now as an apprentice (can't get into this line of work without being an apprentice first), pay is pretty good though at around 11$ an hour for an apprentice (only about 30% of what I should have when I finish my apprenticeship). Also loads of overtime and night work, so it can get a bit tiring at times.

I'm basically a nerd that went pro. Got my doctorate and landed a research job. I really quite like my job as I'm generally just given a number of contractors and sent off to do whatever awesome stuff I can come up with and then get back to my boss occasionally. It's a bit stressful in terms of having to deliver in a vague environment vs having a clear cut thing I can do that constitutes success. I also have too much agency to ever blame anything on anybody else.

All the sitting probably is killing me though.

In recent times I got a bit grumpy because engineers aren't "cool" and it occured to me that 90% of modern music, poetry, and half the "moral" of movies are more or less talking crap about my suburban white collar self. But I've almost convinced myself to knock that off.

I have just recently finished my Bachelors in Brand Advertising/Communication - 2013 recent :P

I work Logistics for for a fortune 500 company and we do 3PL work. My current account I work for is Devon Energy. I set up trucking requests for all of their Oil&Gas Well's. I am apart of a team of 4. I sit behind a computer all day. I am also in the United States Army have been for the last 10 years this July. I am a Training NCO waiting for my Officer Packet to go through so I can become a 2LT. I am in a Drill Sergeant Battalion so I have a bunch of pompous asses trying to figure out who has the larger stick when it is Drill weekend. I love my job now and am currently trying to work to the next position. I am salary non-exempt so If I work OT I get the OT and if not then I just get my salary Win-Win

It gives me time to waste on here and reading manga

i understand working 12 hour shifts, been doing it myself for 6 months. when you hate the work, time crawls by and you look at the clock every 10 minutes hoping that 30 had gone by.

but when the work is interesting or you have a good team, time flies and at the end of the night you feel like you worked for 4 hours instead of 12.

keep your head up man, i hope whatever you applied for pans out.

yeah, but at least you got to carry a gun. on the other hand, there's the chance that you'd actually have to use the gun to defend yourself or your cargo, so maybe that's not so cool after all. but at least, being military, you'd probably be better trained than whoever wanted to rob you.
