AF Community Music Project: Planning Thread

Hi I am a drummer who has drummed with RaShayRitto since way back. Sounds like yall have some really cool ideas going here. Obviously as a drummer I am not much of music composer (though I think I can offer useful constructive criticism). I know how to read sheet music for guitar and drums (though tabs mean nothing to me). I really like jamming to original music so please send me anything you want to even if its just a verse of chorus. looking forward to working with everyone.

abscifi and i go way back (to like middle school). he's the first drummer i ever played with and in my opinion the best drummer i've ever played with. I've played with some music degree geniuses who run circles around him on a technical level, but he has a unique style that i always hear in my head when i imagine a drum part for something i write.

Well now that I'm back in the sauce, I'll be working on a little touch of stuff here and there. I'll try to record a couple songs and send them out. I'll probably have to e-mail them to you, Shay, and then you can post them up.

As for me well, I have to start packing for college here soon. I have less then 2 weeks. But during that time, I will try my best to get something started. I did fiddle around with my piano and did get something going. I just have to kinda get it down on paper or in my head and record it once its done. Might be a while before its done.

aw man i still havent emailed you that stuff! my pc is dead so i've been stuck with the family one and its WAY underequipped for converting/editing vids. today i'm gonna just record that stuff to audio and send it by some time tonight. I PROMISE

this is the verse riff for the 2nd song in the videos i uploaded before. I also sang some scratch vocals over it and i like how the vocal melody goes with what i'm playing. forgive how weak my clean singing voice is, i'm used to singing with a lot more dirt

I like the melodic line for the vocal and the riff is cool enough.
Any thoughts on a acoustic guitar part in the song? Like either at the opening or as sort of a "break" in there like after the solo part before it then again kick off again?
It'll sort of create a contrast to the hard riff we already got going.

I might be overinfluenced by all the Streetlight Manifesto I've been listening to lately and I can't write music so it might be hard to catch what I'm trying to get out here xP

On a different note, any idea about vocalist and lyrics yet?

heck i'm open for any instrument on any song man! if someone wants to play wine glasses then have at it! as far as the acoustic thing goes, yeah that would add a lot of texture. i'm not confident in my ability to write something pretty sounding though. the acoustic part i hear in my head for this song requires proficient finger or hybrid picker. i'm a stright up flat picker so i'm SOL as far as that goes

we have a few vocalists who are a part of the original roster for this project, but as you can see very few people have actually shown up yet. i'm hoping everyone's schedules become a little less hectic soon so we can see more activity. i'm comfortable with writing the lyrics if no one else wants to, i write all the lyrics for my real world music projects anyway. i recruited abscifi today though, and another irl friend should be on here soon. the other guy is a bass player that i've known just as long and have played with a few times

My D string is broken and I have no amp. LOL But I can probably come up with some punk riffs using just the E and A strings. That's the great thing about punk rock. You can get by with only 2 strings.

I watching this band play and their bassist broke a string. They still played about 5 more songs.

Please forgive the lack of good tempo and the shine from the bald spot. note: if you start my video at 9 seconds and RaShayRittos somewhere around 26 seconds they layover sort of...just playing around with it a little bit.

dont worry man i find the bald spot quite sexy! interesting, this sounds like a departure from your usual style. i was expecting uber subdivided snare-highhat phrases with some machine gun fills! then again, how can i talk when i'm posting ideas for a pop song. where has our manliness gone, adam? WHERE!?

i like this idea but would like to propose another one. since this is a mellow riff, i think some high energy drums would provide a neat contrast. for example of what i mean check out "great pretending" by the band Paulson. i think thats the song title....i remember showing it to you way back in the day or something. he plays those drums in such a way that it almost sounds like programmed drums for electronica or something. of course this is just an idea, if you think something more in the pocket is in order then forget what i said

edit: yeah now that i listen again this has quite a drum line sort of feel to it. by the way take the pads off and just wail on those drums man. have the wife fight off the neighbors!

Yeah I remember them...Ok I ll play around with some different feels. I personally like having the tom-tom fills in the latter part but that of course was round one and very much a baseline. I will play around some more

I don't know how violin could fit into your project though. I've been exclusively classical... Oh well, I play piano too, so that might be better. But then again violin would give it some color...

violin makes everything super epic, so we'd love to have your input! Kirei sent me some good piano pieces that we could use as a starting point if we decide not to do some simple punk rock at the moment. if she gives the ok i'll post them up later. i have visions of epic songs with classical instruments and tons of layered heavy guitars.

You can go ahead and use the waltz, Shay. Sam, the violin idea is great. It adds a very epic feel to any piece. Ever hear of a group called Bond? They do techno and crap with classical instruments. Predominantly violin.
