    Default A few quick questions

    Hi all
just a few quick questions about japanese (mainly computer based).
1> When typing in japanese on a computer, do you not need to add spaces using space bar? (im aware you dont generally add spaces but using spacebar via habbit it always changes my wrods from hiragana to kanji), so can i write what i want to (just say something like 'hello there im blah blah' without spaces?
2- how do i get to type in my browser using kana (only)? i had a endless battle with word this morning getting it to let me use japanese, i changed the IME settings to japanese and keyboard inputs to hiragana but it would work (it shows the icons in the task tray but no luck), i was able to get it to work by changing word default language to japanese (which is changed back but i went into its options which seems to have done the trick, only problem i have is in question 1 with the kanji, but how do i use japanese input outside word? i am starting to converse more on study forums and its inconvenient to write something into word then copy it into my browser.
3- this is more a note, but is it possible to keep input to kana only? i know hiragana and studying katakana so there what i want to use, kanji isnt all to usefull unless i want to say dog or cat lol (i havent started kanji yet)

on the side i do have japanese language packs installed.
Ive also set it up so supposedly it will enable japanese input when i hit Alt+Shift (switches between english and japanese inputs).
and Heres my IME settings, i switched between Romaji and Kana input but no differance. (click image to view...)

I mainly need it working in my firefox browser, i know theres addon's as such to help but id rather use a proper input method to help me study.
    Thanks for any help

    1. No you don't, a typical Japanese sentence doesn't have spaces. Commas are applicable though.
    2. After making sure you have the language toolbar visible, if it's still at EN, try to cycle between inputs using Alt+Shift.
    3. The IME input should be in all-hiragana if you don't try and convert it by hitting Spacebar. Hit Enter to complete the input.

I dunno what else would be the problem, you have the toolbar working right for Word, it's only that when you have Firefox as active window it switches back to EN, is that it?

...so that you know where you can find me

Good, didnt think it should need spaces either
Yeah all the input and such word fine inside word its self but outside word in browsers and the such it only uses basic english as always, the language bar is showing its set to JP and using in its own word 'Japanese input system' but alas no results in my browser

@Darkcobra : Usually, when I type on Firefox, it switches back to EN unless I click the area I want to type in and switch it to JP there. You can try doing that? It might help.

Got them all working now, it lets me write how i please to my hearts content in browser and other programs, for some reason the system wasnt allowing access to one the files.
All i did was insert my windows disc and told it to use full hiragana again and it worked, not sure why windows disc let it do that as i didnt do anything with the disc besides put it in the drive (all files was already installed). But i just wish to thankyou both for your trouble and help, i really appreciate it and am happy i got it all working. So truly thankyou
    ありがとう ^^

Oh also sorry for double post, just thought i would let you know

Here are default hotkeys for Microsoft IME on American computer. I lived in America so I have a American laptop computer, so I use this all the time.
(this assumes you haven't disabled or changed the hotkeys)

    1. Switch Language (if you have only two enabled, it toggles, if 3 or more, it scrolls in a specific order)

    Left Alt + Left Shift

    2. (In Japanese IME using US English Keyboard) Switch between previously used JP method and the Romaji (English, basically) method. (I suggest always using HIRAGANA as this allows Kanji via space bar, hiragana, and katakana all at once)

Left Alt + tilde ( ~ ) key (It should be just above the Tab key)

    3. (In Japanese IME using US English Keyboard while in HIRAGANA mode.) turn the currently typed selection into ALL FULL SIZED KATAKANA

F7 (pressing F7 consecutively in this situation changes the kana one by one back to hiragana from right to left, until only the first kana is FULL SIZED KATAKANA, then pressing again will turn them all into FULL SIZED KATAKANA again.)

    4. (In Japanese IME using US English Keyboard while in HIRAGANA mode.) turn the currently typed selection into ALL HIRAGANA.

    F6

    5. (In Japanese IME using US English Keyboard while in HIRAGANA mode.) turn the currently typed selection into ALL HALF SIZED KATAKANA

    F8

Note: After pressing F6-8 for #3-5, press ENTER to actually type the symbols.

Please note that the IME bar will always show the DEFAULT language when you have not selected a typable text box with the mouse cursor. (aka in your comp, EN probably)

Also, programs remember what language you are on, so if you open one FIREFOX window and type on a website in Japanese, then click a link (removing the mouse cursor from a text box) it will show EN on the IME, but next time you click a text box that is typable, it should automatically return to JP and HIRAGANA mode etc. as long as the FIREFOX window is open. If closed and opened again, it will default to EN)

Remember, this is all talking about defaults for US English windows IME default using an US EN keyboard. As far as space bar is concerned, if you are afraid of kanji, don't use it, if you accidentally hit it, hit F6 to return the selection to HIRAGANA and hit ENTER to input it.

    Thank you

    Thankyou ^^
acutally i dont have a US keyboard and use English UK settings (or did) but these still work because when you change default system keyboard settings to JP it also re-allocates the keyboard design, which is that resembling a us (with the key locations) and because i sometimes worked with these settings on MAC's in college and such im quite adaptive to using a US english keyboard design layout
tested some these and they all seem to work fine aswell so thankyou very much for the extra input ^^ should prove usefull espically as time savers
