i avoided 8 altogether and haven't had any complaints with 7 as an OS, honestly i would have been perfectly fine if they kept updating XP. is there any significant reason for me to upgrade to 10? cause i "secured my free download" when it came out and after i heard about the spying software and other things, i never downloaded it. my hardware isn't all that great for gaming and i really just use this thing to watch movies, stream, browse the net and record music.

I really don't see a reason not to upgrade (except maybe for peripheral incompatibilities). Win 7 was great, but 10 is faster, more secure, kinda keeps the Win 7 feel and is free. It's true that there are differences and right now some minor features are missing, but the learning curve is very small and the missing features are being implemented with every new preview build. The whole spying thing is just a lot of false propaganda, too. Telemetry is something every company uses as a way to improve their products. It's been there ever since the broadband internet made it's debut and the amount of data being sent is increasing on pair with faster internet connections being available. The things MS lets you disable are just the things that would improve their ability to solve issues more efficiently, but are very likely to include personal data, the rest is fairly anonymous.

I'm in your boat. I detested Vista and completely skipped/avoided 8/8.1, and put off the upgrade to 10 as long as I could. Why? Because there was nothing wrong with 7, it did everything it was supposed to. However, we have to bear in mind that it's also very old now (it's what ... 7 years old now?) and proper support of 7 itself ceased last year.

There's going to come the point where something (in my case videogames and Sony's PS4 Remote Play) will force you to upgrade. Flash is right; like changing from XP to Vista, Vista to 7, 7 to 8 etc, there are going to be things that are different or have been moved, and you'll almost certainly have to Google things (such as how to remove that damn Language bar >_>). But, y'know, given that 7 is now outdated and until next month the upgrade is free, you should take it.

Somewhat irrelevant, I've actually not had any system crashes yet either. You remember me complaining/trying to troubleshoot those mystery system breaks, Flash? I have a good feeling it was my board's UEFI's Windows SecureBoot thing, because an update on 7 broke it and forced me to turn it off (why it was on in the first place is beyond me, but my brother rigged this board in my comp up so eh). Kinda funny how Microsoft broke their own utility >.>

Yeah, I'm liking Windows 10. Although, it likes to turn itself on and scare the dickens out of me at 2:30am.

It's also got that retro feel, like those 1980/1990s popular X window managers. The solid colors and 90 degree sharp angles and simple rectangular shapes is a nice change. It looks a lot nicer than all the curves and transparency in Windows 7.

I mean, honestly... Look at Windows 7:

I mean, too many curves and that transparency is epic bad.

I really want the 1980s/1990s X11 boxy and solid-color appearance of twm and little squares with applications from WindowMaker. Totally awesome and retro. They should have called it 'Retro' instead of 'Metro'!

I'm not exactly on point with technology terms but here's my review. I have two laptops and one of them used to be 8.1 and I took the upgrade as soon as it was released. It works hella fine and smooth, the interfaces are A-OK, and I'm glad they decided to combine the settings unlike in Win 8. However, my other laptop is Win 7. TBVH, I truly like Win 7 since it's similar to Win XP (Come on, Vista was crap and we all know). I have to admit though, Win 10's features is much more advanced and versatile, and I get to do things quicker, such as going through files.

The reason why I'm still hesitating on upgrading the Win 7 to Win 10 is that, IMO, Win 10 suits more on touch screens. The laptop I have with Win 10 is a touch screen, thus, making it easier to use Win 10. I need something more to convince me to swiitch the win 7 to win 10. Any thoughts?

    EoL.

Windows 7 is already EoL as far as major support for it goes. I've got Windows 10 on two computers (desktop and laptop) and I've got absolutely no issue with using either without a touch screen interface. It operates for the most-part the same as Windows 7 (for the most part) and I've had practically no issue with it since installing it. I came from W7 myself (free upgrade).

Windows 10 may be "great", but that doesn't excuse the way Microsoft pushed its so called "free" upgrade system. I'm running Windows 7 on a near 10-year old laptop. I'm about to build a new and more powerful desktop computer, so it makes no sense for me to install Windows 10 at this time, especially on a machine that's more limited than the one I'm going to build.

Meanwhile, I'm stuck with an uninstallable and annoying "Get Windows 10" (GWX) panel; well, apparently, the only way to get rid of it is to install a third party app such as Never10 (or mess with the Windows Registry). Since I don't want to install Windows 10 to my laptop, that GWX panel is nothing more than waste of space on my HDD, and about as welcome as a turd. Sure, compared to say, malware, GWX is but a minor inconvenience; but it's the principle. By not allowing me to uninstall GWX, Microsoft is effectively using my HDD as a cache for otherwise unnecessary data. What part of "No" doesn't Microsoft understand? It's not that I hate Windows 10; in fact I think it's a very good OS. But that's beside the point. This isn't about Windows 10; it's about an arrogant company that does not respect my workflow decisions. Just because Windows 10 is a good OS, that does not give Microsoft the right to withhold a program on my computer until I decide to do what in their best interests. By the way, as the GWX thing goes, I'm one of the lucky ones. Apparently, as stated in the video below, Microsoft released a more automatic version of GWX through Windows Update, which has angered a lot of people. Somehow this version has not reached my computer yet--and I'd like to keep it that way.

I've finally gone ahead and upgraded my laptop, and there has been an improvement for the most part as I can at least use a web browser while windows update chugs away in the background (if I tried that in windows 8.1, firefox kept on going non responsive), but this is only to test if two games that were broken in windows 8.1 have been fixed and if they are then my current desktop will be going win10 as well.

That's just ... stupid. I can understand it for businesses, sure, but for a guy who has a laptop he uses maybe twice a year? Come on. I'm not paying $90 a year to use my laptop twice.

I doubt that they are going to use the same approach. It's counter-productive for MS and very limiting for the consumer. I mean, they will make it subscription based, but like Office it is going to be available stand-alone too, probably with a few years of free upgrades. Considering they have already announced the prices and Windows 10 on USB is already available in stores, a subscription only strategy wouldn't work at all.

Default Re: Windows 10 is great

One OS to rule them all? Someone has been watching Lord of the Rings.

This is a an argument that has been raging for 25 years. There is no single OS. Each operating system has its own strengths and weaknesses. Each also has its own niche. The roots of Mac OS X were derived from UNIX. As are the roots of all distributions of GNU / Linux. In the enterprise machine room, no one dominates. It is about one-third Windows, about one-third GNU / Linux, and about one-third proprietary (from IBM's Z/OS to AIX, HP-UX, etc. Nowhere do we see Chrome OS, Android, iOS, or even (except in rare cases) Mac OS X.

Outside the enterprise machine room, the story is quite different: In terms of full function operating systems, we see Windows at about 90%, Mac OSX at about 8%, and UNIX + GNU / Linux (all variants) taking up most of the remaining 2%.

There is lots of disagreement about where the two major smartphone/tablet operating systems fit in. Apple would claim first place with iOS. and Android would make the same claim. Neither is a full-features operating system.

Windows Phone (soon to be called Windows 10 mobile) is a distant third-place, just ahead of BalcBerry OS.
