Joan did terrible tbh, perhaps she was nervous okay, but she missed quite a few tones >_> . I also gave up on this sh*t since it's just all the Eastern European countries voting for each other. I mean, dafuq Russia 2nd?

I sort of stumbled on the Eurovision Song Contest the other day (or thereabouts, meh), which just goes to show my lack of interest in it. I essentially missed the songs from most of the countries but managed to get a preview the 26 finalists. I didn't take the results too seriously because year on year it has been proven that the voting system in Eurovision is easily corrupted and has little to do with the quality of the performances themselves. I think the votes would be more interesting if the performing countries weren't revealed until after the votes had been counted, but oh well... I doubt the system will change, because like the 2012 Olympics in Britain, the Eurovision Song Contest is more about patriotism and raising national/political profiles, even if it means sacrificing a few human rights along the way and forcing taxes on a majority who can not afford to attend such events.

That been said, I thought Sweden deserved to win on the grounds that the song was at least listenable and pleasant with some quality vocals, if not all that groundbreaking and could have as easily appealed without the silly martial-art-like gimmicks. I would have otherwise gone for Spain, as in many ways I felt that the singer there had the superior vocals, but at a certain point I found the song too overwhelming and too tiring to be enjoyable: It was ALL power and therefore not really dynamic whereas the Swedish song at least had a nice build up.

I did notice a number of countries singing in English as well (as one member pointed out) much to my disappointment. At least with songs in non-English, I could pretend they were more exotic than they actually are.

Overall I can't think of any justification for the likes of the Eurovision Song Contest to exist. At best it's a passive diversion, and a very low priority one at that.

Hmm yeah ...the latter (American Idol) of which is actually a spin-off of Pop Idol, which was a British program to begin with. Not that I give a damn about national origins at all, but you seemed to be implying that American Idol was an "American" idea, when in fact both Pop Idol and American Idol were created by a Brit named Simon Fuller. In any case, you cannot really compare American Idol to the Eurovision Song Contest, since like I said earlier, the latter is more about patriotism and raising national/political profiles. At the end of the day the EVSC voting system is so full of exploits that it's a wonder any country has any incentive to competently perform at all.

To be fair, I would agree that American Idol is more enjoyable than the Eurovision Song Contest (this year being surprisingly very good with the former) though, but the sentiment of your statement is laughable nonetheless and smacks of a complete lack of homework. "our standards"? You sound exactly like a typical patriot who believes that talent hinges on nationality, which is as meaningful as thinking that talent is linked to race.
