What are RC cells?

So, I recently watched Tokyo Ghoul (which was a lot better than I thought it would be) and as I was watching, I got to thinking. What are the RC cells that identify ghouls as ghouls? Does anyone haven even a vague scientific theory on these things?

Not sure you want a serious answer or funny one, but if it's a serious one then I can only briefly answer it: according to the Tokyo Ghoul:re, RC cells are called as Red Child cells which exist in every person's body. However, there's a limited amount of RC cells in a normal persona body (sorry I forgot the exact number), and Ghoul particularly has much, much higher RC cells than normal person. These RC cells seem can only be utilized by Ghoul for Kakuhou and normal human can't use it.
The recent chapters in Tokyo Ghoul:re also gives me an idea that it seems Ghouls were actually artificial being, they used to be human but modified to have much higher RC cells, resulting in becoming a new "race" of ghouls. I mean, there must be some sort of reason why the ghouls exist and why they look EXACTLY like human in the first place.
