Telling someone you like Anime

Strangely.. Some people i know at my school aren't surprised i'd be into this stuff.. I guess its just that appearance and personality i give off.. But usually if it comes up in a conversation... The 1st thing people who dont know what it is- sometimes say is "...Whats anime?"

I..I just.. feel so lost when they ask that.. Anime's the greatest thing ever TTwTT

Everyone has their own hobbies in life - anime included. If you are denied of your right to enjoy a hobby or are shunned for it, then you must choose between the things you enjoy and the people who don't want you to do what you enjoy.

I think people hate it when people say they like anime because they think its a childish thing. But who knows

My hubby and I loves anime, his friends also enjoy watching all sorts of anime but I don't think any of my friends like anime since I couldn't get them into conversation with an anime topic. Oh, well... it doesn't matter....

Usually when I tell someone or a group of people that I like anime they give off that facial expressions saying that they are kinda shocked that you what it but not so surprise as much. Most of my friends don't like anime but what really surprised me is that they respect it but won't watch it. I ask them why don't you like anime? they usually reply "Its not real" and I'm like "Is anything you see on TV real other than the news documentaries?"... Oh well each individual has their own tastes.

It's not that vague(childish.) It implies it's a medium intended to be viewed by children. It could also imply that the plots, dialogue, character development, and art style are more geared toward an adolescent(or child-like) audience.

All of which uh, I totally agree with. But that doesn't mean we can't be friends. ^_^;

I think it's only an issue if you like anime and don't do a whole lot else.
So if you're into anime, but you're also into regular stuff, it's not a problem. In other words, as long as anime doesn't run your life I don't think most people make fun of it.
Personally, I don't see what the big fuss is. You got people who are into British stuff (like those boring Harry Potter or Pirates of the Caribbean movies) and people into French stuff so why can't someone be into something Japanese? Racism much? Then that's THEIR problem, not yours.

I think the main issue is that you guys consider it a problem. If you're ashamed of it, then other people are gonna pick up on that and tear into you. It's just human nature.

That's the wrong attitude. o_o Liking anime does not make you superior to anybody, and all it does it facilitate a negative attitude toward people who do enjoy it.

I still think there's other things that is maybe a little more awesome than anime, I could list a few but I mean after a while people would grow out of it.
I stopped watching and having full interest of anime maybe two years ago. So if you'll ask me why I'm here on an anime forum site? Because I am. :c

I'm on an anime site because (this one in particular) seems to have more intelligent individuals than most places on the internet. And well, because when I joined way back in the day (as a child) I did enjoy anime.

I couldn't care less what people think. What's so wrong with Anime? They probably go home and watch porn cause it's not like they're any better. Flip up your fingers and walk away, simple as that.

I made a lot of my really close friends because of our interest in anime/manga and I really haven't been teased about it at all.
People just figure it's part of what makes me who I am and accept it. A friend who makes fun of you for something you really love shouldn't be called a friend in my opinion.

I guess I never really had a problem with it because when I came into liking it, it was during middle school and there was actually a pretty large base of people in my school that liked it/began to like it. Our librarian was seriously awesome and really enjoyed it as well so it was always fun to have conversations about it with him.
Since I came from a school that didn't really have many kids going to that middle school, I really had to branch out and make new friends which manga and anime helped me to do. It's seriously how I made such a close bond with my best friend, now, that I basically followed to high school in another district (and am having a sleepover with right now as I type this). I've never been afraid to say that I'm a fan and I'm actually kind of proud of it.

If people ask me why or how I can like it, they're usually uninformed and don't know much about it.
I've never really had someone make fun of me for it, but if they did I wouldn't really care.
I tell people how the storylines are different and it's nice to experience something that's so different from what I was used to and there are a lot of series out there that are really good and worth getting into.

Even at this new high school that I'm at that is so hard to fit into, there's still the J-club and even though I'm not sure if I can really get along with those people, I've been able to find some people in it that are really great and I'm glad to have met.
And even though I'm not into anime or manga very much it's still part of who I am and if people ask me about it, I'll tell them straight out.
If they can't accept me for who I am because of one difference then it's really not worth it to be their friend.

I don't get why someone would get annoyed and or disturbed by liking anime. There's a mild reason for people that go ballistic if you tell them if you're "a furry" but anime, eh. It's more about: a. how much you care and or obsessed with it and b. how much of a jerk the person you are talking to is.
I guess I could care less what someone says on my interest in Anime since i got plenty of other skeletons in my closet.

My housemates and friends know that I watch anime a lot but they assume that just because I like anime it means I'm obsessed with hentai as well. Most of the people who I meet and have the knowledge of anime encompassing only the first 15 episodes of Naruto or One Piece also make the wrong assumption that anime fan = hentai fan so its not something I readily discuss when going out. Usually I have no problem saying that I like anime to my friends and try to get the ones who just make assumptions of what they hear on the net or from friends to at least try watching some before jumping to conclusions.
I'm going to try to join the anime club next semester here at my uni since I have already seen them showing Welcome to the N.H.K., Requiem for the Phantom, Samurai Champloo, etc. and don't stick to the mainstream ones like Bleach, One Piece and Naruto like the other anime clubs the other posters here suggest.
