Default Hajimemashite: How would you respond to this?

How basic is your Japanese, at least?

No, translating, cause I can tell.

    Start with:

    Watashi wa....

    Or Boku wa...

What about "ore"? I'm not very formal even in my native language, so ore is the most comfortable for me.

    オレの日本語のスキルは恐ろしいw

Ore no nihongo no skill wa osoroshii (lol)

Question, @OhMyAmethyst , do you know much hiragana/katakana/kanji? Or do you use romaji for the most part?

Nah, my Japanese skills are horrific. Lol. Maybe I shouldn't call it a skill then I guess? OH WELL.

And, I didn't know you were familiar with my writing.

I know very little, to answer your question. I'm studying my basic kanji and romanji now, actually... Eventually, I shall process, lol

Hmm, I don't know if I'd go straight to kanji, if I were you. Learning the katakana and hiragana alphabets first make kanji a lot easier in the long run, since you'll know how to "spell" and type the kanji, instead of just having to rely on memorizing what it looks like, which can be a real pain.

Oh, believe me, I know my Hiragana and Katakana quite well. Weller than most, I should say. It's not a real pain once you get the hang of finding ways to remember them. Trust me, it works. What, you're not up for that?

Oh I see. From what you said it sounded like you didn't know much about the hira/kata alphabets. My bad. I was just thinking that studying only romaji and kanji would be difficult if you didn't know hira/kata.

But yeah, once you have all that down, kanji can be real easy, and a lot more fun. A trick I used to do when I first started studying was posting random sticky notes around my house with appropriate kanji on them. So, on my mirror I would have kanji for "kagami (mirror)", "yousu (appearance)", and "kao (face)". I did that sort of thing all around the house. Later, I'd start posting phrases around the house instead of just words. Like, "kyou wa ganbatte", "oyasuminasai", "kimi wa harahetta nara, tabete", etc. I'd also keep a list of common kanji characters in my binder for when I was at school, so that I'd see them all day.

Sometimes I'd end up doodling on my class notes and writing Japanese captions for them!

You know what, that is a damn good idea. STICKY NOTES! That's it, isn't it? I will definitely try that, that's excellent! "Sugoi!" XD

Default Re: Hajimemashite: How would you respond to this?

If you were responding to someone after they've introduced themselves to you (i.e. as your title says), then you wouldn't start with Watashi wa or Boku wa (or even Ore wa) because the subject of the sentence is already known. You don't need to say that again.

In fact, if it's understood, Japanese speakers try to go out of their way to not use first or second person pronouns as much as they can. (And unnecessary use of a first person pronoun could be looked upon as arrogant, much like heavy emphasis on the word "I" would be in English - like "I am John Doe.")

So, to answer your question, I'd probably respond:

    秋夫です。はじめまして。どうぞよろしく
    (Akio desu. Hajimemashite. Douzo yoroshiku.)

    My 2 yen,

    Akiosama

Even if the subject is known prior to saying a name, I don't need to say watashi wa, but it doesn't mean I shouldn't. Especially if I say I'm new to Japanese.
But, I guess simplifying sentences makes things easier. I actually like that approach since I put someone understanding me over being grammatically correct.

It depends - a couple of the textbooks that I've read actually say that it is wrong to say watashi wa. Again, as I said previously, there's an attached meaning to it, at least to a native speaker.

The idea that Japanese is a high context language should be instilled early, as well. Japanese is a pretty awkward language if you merely try to create direct translation sentences from English for this very reason.

Doubly so with first person and anata apparently - first person because it has an arrogant feel to it if you say it when you don't need to, and anata because there's a sense of familiarity attached to it - the person's name would be better in a neutral situation, if known. Anata is also commonly used by women to address their husband or lover, in a way roughly equivalent to the English "dear".
