Default Social Media Debate: Pros and Cons

Hello. Well, social media has blown up over the last decade. Sites like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and Snapchat dominate the world wide web. But I'd like to know the pros and cons of social media.

In my opinion, social media will lead to UFO intervention.

    JK.

Pros: you can be a chatty Kathy and have many online friends to follow/unfollow. Media is at your fingertips, like on YouTube.

Cons: It's irritating to greet someone and they're not looking at you, but at their phone!!
    My Wi-Fi, it's gone out . . .

Not sure if you can count this as a con but sites like Twitter pretty much killed forums

Exactly. Maybe I'm just an old fuddy duddy but, I'll never understand twitter. In ways I can see how it can be useful. (The only time I ever used it, I tweeted a singer to play a song he hadn't been at my show, and he did.) But in general, It might be good for companies/sites/artists/ect to share information, but it seems like it would be really hard to have an actual conversation. Even with facebook which I do use a little bit (only to keep in touch with a few people that I lost contact with when AIM died.) It again doesn't seem really easy to have a real conversation. IMO it's one thing if both existed, and both have their place for what you want, but the fact that message boards have pretty much died because of them, makes me sad. It's like people don't want to have real conversations anymore.

I prefer personal contact. If someone wants to know something about me, just ask. If I want you to know, I will tell you. I'm not posting it on-line for every f-head in the world to see.

What limited exposure I have had to social media has brought me into contact with a variety of idiots. I can do without it. I am not on Twitter, Facebook or anything right now -- except this site, if this site counts. People here are pretty cool.

I've never really engaged with social media and intend to keep it that way. In fact, the more time goes by, the less I want to have anything to do with it. In short I perceive that social media does more harm than good.

As I've said before, I'm a game show nerd, and there's a newer game show channel (NOT "Game Show Network"/GSN) That show all classics. (... ... with one, random, newer dud thrown in for some reason, but anyway...)

They announced today that they have big news about their schedule/lineup, but they won't release the date of the change until they get 100 new followers on instagram and won't release the full schedule untill they get 5K likes...

...WHY? Seriously why?? They get 100 more followers and, what exactly does that do? Does that.... magically make them cool or something? I seriously fail to see what the point of waiting for that mark is! Not to meantion, it's a niche channel that not everyone has, probably not even half the country has it...

I don't have any social media other than FB (and I regret that I have that too). and that's not changing because a channel is "Begging for likes". Ugh. It takes everything in me to not rant on the page, how asinine that is, but in the end, I don't want to hurt anyone's feelings.

...OH, and in telling my bf about that, he informs me that on eBay you used to be able to BUY FOLLOWERS. My mind boggles at how stupid that is. Uuuugh.

I got on social media (MySpace, FB, Twitter) when I was far too young to even have an account. Fun times back then. I met a lot of cool people, and some not-so-cool. Nowadays all anyone wants to do anymore is argue with strangers about politics, and use politics as an excuse to be self righteous and nasty at the same time. Even with people they used to consider friends.

(You don't completely agree with me on this banal topic? You're a shitty person, your family and your dog are shitty people and you should all die.) Not cool man.

(You voted for someone I didn't vote for? You're the devil incarnate, excuse me while I expose your home address and place of employment and also send a SWAT team to your house.) Hyperbolic, but also not cool.

(You're friends with someone I've said/done the aforementioned to? You're literally the same as them and I'll spread lies about you too). Really not cool.

Truth is, the most they'll do is make posts talking crap about you and block you so you can't see it. They're a part of why I use social media less. They're just annoying and don't seem to have anything better to do.

tl;dr I'll keep my rant short but throwback to when social media was used to make friends rather than enemies. I'd rather talk to people I have things in common with and learn about those I don't, than get into arguments with everyone.

edit: sorry if this tangent was super off topic

Like some have said, there’s definitely upsides to social media if you’re within a company or do personal work and need a outlet to share creative works. From personal experience, I’ve been on & off consistently for years trying to advertise my art, only to always end up deactivating my accounts. Just recently in-fact I had to nuke my twitter (again) because seeing posts from old friends outright bag on others to showcase how ‘high and mighty’ they are was just too much. You see the awful side of people, and it’s really disheartening (not to mention exhausting trying to keep up).

I’ve always loved forums for the open concept approach, everyone’s involved and it just seems a lot more chill. It’s not minute-to-minute conversation, but thought out responses and proper organization. Quality over quantity I guess. Always sad to hear when folks say forums are a dying medium, but sadly so true
