The word "affordable" is suggestive no matter how you spin it. Obviously I am not gonna give you a very expensive laptop but how much you're willing to pay / how much you can pay is what takes into account.
I'm not an expert but

You think so...hmm apparently we will be doing a big lan party thing there were we power threw a ton of different games together so a comp is pretty necessary. I wonder how much it would cost to bring my PC there and back then...I don't know I still kind of want a laptop for these long trips ya know. Well anyway thanks for the advice.

Did you read the OP?
The last thing I wanna do is take up space with my Monster PC, tbh.
@Meteorkeeper What games are you gonna play? I mean, you can get a really cheap one too .

What?.... Why would you recommend someone who wants a gaming laptop a PC or even worse, a tablet? Tablets are useless especially for gaming. Judging by the price, it's not over-priced at all for a gaming laptop and for you to think otherwise, do you even play PC games other than farmville or any other 'tablet game'.
Personally I'm looking into a gaming laptop myself. Alienware is what I've been looking at. I have a macbook pro but it struggles when I play Borderlands 2 so I'm thinking about getting a laptop made for gaming. Gaming PC's CAN be cheaper than gaming laptops but not always depending on what exactly it is you want. For me though, since I travel a lot and game and do graphics work on the go, a full blown PC is not an option for my lifestyle.

Going for "gaming" laptops at this price range really demands that you cut corners somewhere, but it's up to you where they are.
- What resolution do you want, and is there any minimum that you absolutely must have?
- What games are you going to be playing, and what sort of settings do you want to run them at?
- HDD space (or SSD for that matter).
- Screen size in itself.
- Battery life??
As I mentioned, getting a laptop that performs well at such a "low" budget really demands cutting some corners.
I'd recommend taking a look at some of the CyberPower laptops, which seem to have a nice price/performance ratio. Haven't tried them myself though, so I don't know about the actual quality of the finish on these.
Realistically any laptop will do then. I play borderlands 2 on my macbook pro. By far this is NOT a gaming computer. Macs have port issues. Many PC games are not made for Mac users to play, thus this greatly limits many of the games we have available. That being said the game runs just fine.
Borderlands 2
56.5 hours past 2 weeks
956 hrs on record
I think my hours in-game via steam speak for themselves. Multi-tasking is a little hard though, it starts to lag a little if I have multiple programs trying to run and am constantly flopping from in-game to web to chat to gosh knows what else. However playing the game you shouldn't really be doing all that much else at the same time anyways.
If you think it's worth the investment go for it, however if not, I'd suggest just a decent laptop.

You're a bit behind I think. Sure, a few years ago tablets only had silly games but nowadays there are awesome games for mobile gaming. Like Xcom enemy unknown, Shantae, and other major games that are basically ports of console/pc games. And you could also buy that Windows 8 Tablet with the keyboard. that's basically a laptop.
Borderlands 2 isn't too heavy of a game. You probably don't even need a "gaming" laptop to play it @Meteorkeeper . You could probably play Borderlands 2 on a decent all-round laptop for 500-600 bucks. A laptop you can use for all tasks like Photoshop and After effects. Whatever you do, do not buy an apple laptop because you'll pay twice the price and get half the performance. (Plus you'll look like a douche wandering around with one really.)
In the end it's up to you. Whatever you want to do, you should do. If you want a gaming laptop regardless, go for it. But just know that you could probably settle for a decent all round laptop. And there are a lot of cool titles for 3DS/vita. (Including borderlands)
Please, make a desktop. Or let someone you know make it.
Price/quality ratio is neat. Just ship it to the thing. Game like a boss. Everyone = amaze.
Ship back home, that way you'll have fun for the future. //1 Because the other options won't last nearly as long //0
Buuut, if you're sure you want a laptop. Then i'm quite sure that 1000$ is more than enough to play BL2
But perhaps not in HQ. with Nvidia effects.

Really? Do you have one? Exactly WHAT about having an apple laptop makes you look like a douche? That's a pretty bold and horribly inaccurate and down right rude statement you just made. Sure if you have/had an apple laptop; I get it if you say you didn't like it after having have owned it. But to downright say someone is a douche by the computer they own and not by their actions? Seriously? Anyways you're not exactly paying twice the price for half the performance.
Memory Size is the same. Hard disk is a little smaller but if you're like me and have an external; it doesn't matter (externals keep clutter off of your hard drive and makes things run smoother). CPU speed is ALSO the same. The support is a little different.
I ran a 13" macbook pro up against some random toshiba laptop:
You are also paying for high end programs that come with the laptop. Things like iPhoto, iDVD, iMovie, iWeb, garage band.. Which are very professional products that come WITH the computer. That is what jacks up the price. It's not just "pay more for less" It's more like "pay more for the same stuff + extra features you cannot get with a windows PC" Which is why a lot of designers, artists, graphics designers, music artist and filmmakers use MACS.

In all honesty, the 2 computers you are comparing there aren't really that close in performance. The Toshiba has a Quad-core while the Mac only has a Dual-core. I7's also come with something called HT (HyperThreading) that increases the processing speed significantly in programs that support it.
The screen is way better on the Mac though (the Toshiba is only 1920x1080p is my guess), but it can make running games at that resolution a bit iffy with only integrated graphics and a slower CPU.
Calling Macs overpriced etc. Is a bit old-school thinking, they've gotten a lot better over the years and are actually in a quite decent spot atm. Macs are suited to a different audience than gamers in general though, so comparing them like this is sort of dumb either way.
OP, as Mystelinth said, if you can manage with a desktop, that would honestly be way better. You'd get way more performance for the buck, and you can customize it pretty much however you want. You can even make a quite small one if you want to make it more managable when travelling etc. Also a lot easier in the future if you ever want to upgrade. Instead of having to change out the whole computer, you can change the individual parts you want/need to upgrade.

That's a big rant. I only said it as a joke, but yes. Some people find walking around with a macbook stereotypical.
And if you're going to compare two laptops, you should also compare the price. Now go on, what's the price of that random Toshiba compared to the macbook?
This is in no way meant to be a pissing contest by the way. We're getting off topic.
My my why I really do appreciate the energy that you all are putting into assisting me just like Foxy said lets try to keep it on topic and not bicker k. You have all given me far more advice and help then I thought I would get and I am positive I will make a far better choice than I would have otherwise thank you all very much. Oh and if you find any good deals do let me know I am still looking. ^^

I knew someone who had used a Mac as a gaming laptop and he said it lagged really bad and it was very slow. He had bought himself an ASUS gaming laptop and he loved it! The graphics were great and games flowed really well. I bought my laptop in June and it's an ASUS gaming laptop. I play Star Wars the Old Republic and it works fantastic. However, I think it's personal preference. I've always had HP and trying to play games with it wasn't great as it ran pretty slow and probably didn't have the capabilities to run games. I know a sales associate where I bought my laptop suggested ACER, ASUS and Alienware as gaming laptops. My friend has Alienware and it works great but you pay an arm and a leg for it. I know that I've been told Alienware has a 2 year life expectancy. (Probably from being over used and abused and perhaps an unrealistic opinion from that person)
For a gaming laptop, I think you would want a lot of RAM and processing power as well as a good graphics card to run games. Take a look around, compare, look at a budget and save for a pretty good one. :3

i'd personally NEVER buy a laptop to use as my gaming console, most of them are hard to tear apart to replace parts as the graphical demands of games increases. i would wholeheartedly recommend that you forgo the laptop idea and instead invest in a PC. they're WAY more modular than laptops, and building your own can be really rewarding. i'd much rather pick and choose which parts i want than just buy a factory-assembled laptop that will be obsolete in one year.
Again, pretty sure @Meteorkeeper is asking for a laptop for a reason.... Obviously a gaming desktop is better but he wants it for this trip....he obviously wants something portable for a trip, not something that will occupy half his car .or heck we don't even know how he's gonna get there and you guys are telling him to take a gaming desktop with him.
If you can pack a gaming desktop with you then go with that otherwise then just try to get a decent laptop.
And tbh if you're gonna play Borderlands 2 then just get a decent 500 dollars laptop like Amber said.

@Foxy
Again Amber, are you reading his posts? He obviously wants it to play with his friends...why would he get a tablet / 3ds / PS Vita? PS3 can't even cross-play Borderlands 2 with the PS Vita..

@Kaitou+ you should read MY posts bro. I never said he should get a vita to play borderlands 2 on with his friends, I said it as a matter of fact.
The way to go for him is probably a laptop since he isn't into hardcore gaming (as far as you're telling us).
It was all unnecessary information though....All he wanted was a laptop so he can take on a trip. But then the topic went off-topic.
Sure he was vague but he clearly said "going on a trip".
That's all I gotta say to the matter though. @Meteorkeeper good luck finding a good laptop

We can read your post and have been. It's just your posts are left field in terms of what the OP is asking for and you've been called out on it by various people. Maybe it's time to admit that and tone down on the defensiveness.
I wouldn't suggest a PC build for the OP. Sure they are nice but they aren't any less expensive (arguably more so) But unless OP is going to take it apart and re-build again later, it's unnecessary. I've had my laptop for 3 years and I've yet ran into a desire to expand upon what I already have, I haven't even maxed out its current capabilities and functionality. I keep trash off of it and on my hard drive so it petty much runs like new.
Also OP; when you find the laptop you like. Remember to take it off of the power source and let it run out it's natural battery. Leaving it plugged in 24/7 constantly charging is a good way to destroy the battery of the device. (This works with phones well.. If you haven't used your phone battery by the end of the day, don't charge it again until it runs out and this will lead to longer battery life).
Laptops FTW. Don't let anyone force you to spend more money than necessary on a PC build if it's not for you & your lifestyle. Gaming on a laptop isn't lame or anything. If it works it works.
