Default Villain or hero: Who is more important?

Who is more important in an anime? The Villain or a Hero?

Personally I think the villain. You can have a lot of fun in an anime with no good guys, but without a villain things get real dull real quick. Look at Shuffle!.

Anime is a lot like sex. Done right it's a beautiful act of creation that brings a little more light into the world. If it's sick and wrong... it's even better.

Yeah, it's kind of hard to have a hero if nothing bad is going on. But bad guys can do their thing any time.

I suppose Im taking the contrarian point of view in this discussion but I think the hero is more important. I have to like the hero and relate to the hero. If the hero is an idiot or unlikeable im probably not going to be much of a fan of the show.

Both aspects are extremely important to a good show but the Hero is the foundation of everything in most cases (IMO)

    Animes dont need "heroes" or "villains", its a heavily dualistic view that seems to reflect the extreme diametric model we apply to everything we perceive, that is that everything has a polar opposite;
good and evil, man and woman, light and dark etc. There are degrees of all in all,

i love the short anime "Cat Soup" it has no villains and im not even sure it has a protagonist XD but then im just some hippy, what would i know

Dont beleive me? watch for yourself, its not for kids tho, or the easily confused.....

    Remember, totally not for kids

And I thought I was taking the contrarian view. Way to go though, your post has nothing to do with the OP. Just because there are Anime that dont follow the theme the OP is talking about does not mean you need to tell us about them in this thread. Make a new thread about that anime.

I apologize for ranting. I think the topic is definitely worthy of some discussion and Id be interested in your opinion.

Actually, i felt it did have everything to do with the OP as it answers the question "Who is more important in an anime? The Villain or a Hero?"

neither are, you can have a perfectly good anime with neither

Actually in a sense, it does. It depends on the anime, with some not needing a clear vision of a hero or villian. This topic asks the question: Which is more important, the hero or villian? My thoughts: Neither. Well, like I said, it really depends on the show, but in most cases it really is neither. I'm not taking sides, but his post was indeed on topic. Anyways, any anime can be good. Villian based anime isn't all that is out there.

Oh. One post in this thread is extremely stupid, but it belongs to neither of you.

    @Roddish @Yoko Littner

Well I suppose I still disagree. The poll at the top doesnt give an option for "if you disagree about the importance of heroes and villains tell us why"

This is a simple thread meant to discuss heroes and villains and which of those two are more important to the story in an anime.

Id be all for discussing the necessity of heroes and villains but thats a different thread.

Getting on topic a little bit here Ill use Pokemon as an example of the hero being the main driving force in the story. Ash and his friends (pokemon included) are without a doubt the reason the show exists. Team Rocket and the other villains are fairly unimportant probably more time fillers than actually having relevance to the overall plot. Villian has little importance but the hero is the one we follow and journey with.

I think without that side of a story (the side to which we relate and cheer for) there is no story.

And? Polls aren't really all that important, at least from my experience on here. What I'm focusing on is the question, not the poll. When this question is asked, is it not asking for our opinions? The question itself isn't bad, but the choices themselves leaves this thread incorrect, at least for some. The answer is really IMO neither, because it depends on the anime. Your opinion is just as good, but don't expect for me to change my opinion and lie because the OP post didn't include two other needed options. I do like the thread, just stating my opinion.

I understand your position here and im not necessarily trying to change anyones opinions. I also realize that im wading myself into dangerous waters when I say I was under the assumption that we were discussing Anime that follow the OP's theme of good and evil/heroes and villains. Looking at the question and the poll I thought it was pretty black and white. I realize there are Anime that dont follow that general theme but I also thought those Anime would be left out of this particular discussion.

I'd say the villain is more important. Without a villain, the hero would have nothing to fight against. Actually, he'd be a normal person if he wasn't like "I gotta stop this guy!"

There has to be a conflict involving an antagonistic force to inspire opposition, so my guess is that both parties are important in a tale/story/what-have-you . . .

If we're talking about which one of the two one prefers . . . Yeah, something tells me that going with the hero of a story would be advice well taken in advance . . .
    My Wi-Fi, it's gone out . . .

Well, it was never described which anime genre we were talking about, so as members we need to use our imagination. Ha. Though, I understand your point as well, but like I said the answer IMO is neither.

I'd say both were pretty important. For conflict and resolution purposes in a story...You could have a story with all heroes-but what would they *do?* You could have a story with all villians-but what would the point be?

Simple.. The point would be like the video game Rampage world tour. Though destroying everything just cuz the character is a villian is kinda dull.
I think the hero is more important. My opinion is more personal than anything. If I were in anime, I would definitely side with the main hero....

I see what youre saying but consider a show where there is a hero (say batman or something) where the hero is the same from show to show but he fights new villains in each episode.

That still has Hero-Villian story resolution. We'll consider Batman, for the sake of this. He will fight them because they're doing something wrong, and the resolution is he outsmarts while he fights them and sends them packing back to Arkham as the resolution. Each episode.

True enough, but you still *need* the enemies to make the show happen. What would Batman do without them? What would he be without his villians? Probably would not be Batman. ::grins::

Lol look at that! Had a feeling you'd friend me anyways. Though, on-topic. AKB0048 is a great example of heroes being more needed than villains, even though not every anime uses that formula. Natsuiro Kiseki had no clear vision of a hero/villain, but was great.

I think hed be Bruce Wayne with parents

While I agree both aspects are entirely necessary I still believe one can be more important than the other. Especially in a case like Batman or really any show where there is a main protagonist vs villain X.

But im also biased because I like heroes (and heros and gyros) I like villains most when there is a redemption aspect to their story but in those cases they usually become heroes.

Lol. Yes, he would, but then you wouldn't have Batman, and the show/comic/movie wouldn't exist to begin with. x3

I suppose that depends on how you look at it...In a lot of stories the "villians" wind up getting ganked-taken out-thrown in jail etc...because the "hero" is supposed to win, and be too important to be disposable. But-there are those stories that are the reverse...Where the hero dies, loses, goes away and the villian winds up winning-Which would be more important there? I'd still probably say both-but-its a food for thought question.
