Default The 10 Commandments of Video Games

So if you could be a god of the video game industry, what 10 commandments would you issue to your video game developers?

Mine would be (and in no particular order...):

    1. Thou shall not produce lousy licence titles. (That's right EA, with your lousy FIFAs and what not!)
    2. Thou shall not produce lousy ports (Yes, again I'm looking at you, EA.); therefore, thou shall make full use of hardware per targeted console.
    3. Thou shall not steal ideas from thy neighbouring game developer companies (especially you, Bandicoot... and erm Pacman!).
    4. Thou shall not design game quests that lead to nowhere.
    5. And in the above, thou shall not design game quests that force the player to search frantically in unlikely places for ordinary things.
    6. Thou shall not produce games that contain manufactured "cool" (That's right, Sims!).
    7. Thou shall not design beat 'em ups in which a fighter can defeat an opponment with a cheap tap, just because he/she has a sliver of vitality left - that's just silly...
    8. Thou shall not design a game in which the player can effectively freeze time when accessing an inventory, weapon, book etc..
    9. Thou shall not design games that force players to buy game guides in order to unlock everything.
    10. Thou shall not create a game idol and worship it. For I am the lord your God and I tolerate no rivals!

The sharing of commandments is also welcome here btw... and you can be as serious and/or as humourous as you like! Oh... and although this thread is entitled "The 10 Commandments of Video Games", please feel free to write as many or as few commandments as you like... you are a god here after all!

    5. Thou shall not substitute gameplay for graphics.
    6. Thou shall not Call of Duty.
    7. Thou shall fill the disc when creating a game (yeah Nintendo, FILL IT).

    1. Thou shall properly BETA test all games before release.
    2. Thou shall look for spelling errors and plot holes.
    3. Thou shall not have level caps.
    4. Thou shall not make sequels.
    5. Thou shall have taken time to consider the story and writing.
    6. Thou shall better reward playing the game, not for playing perfectly like a professional (because I'm not one).
    7. Thou shall NEVER make a game based solely around shooting from cover.
    8. Thou shall ALWAYS make a cooperative multiplayer.
    9. Thou shall not pay game review companies to lie about the game's quality.
    10. THE CAKE IS A LIE.

Hope you enjoyed posting here! ^ ^

1.: I dunno much about normal maps, but I believe they were used in Doom 3 and the likes of Mass Effect 2. I quite like them actually, but in the case of Doom 3 it seems like they were used as a way to compensate for low-poly characters. Or maybe your definition of normal maps is different to mine (Mine actually refers to "normal mapping" technology, which is used to texture certain games), but I'd be interested to hear your elaboratation on that! =3

5.: Yeah... I'm a sucker for graphics and overall I agree with that; but having said that there's only so little gameplay I can take, and I pretty much draw that line at FF13!

7.: Indeed... And although I'm a hard core Nintendo fan, it's very true that they don't fill their disks (or carts for that matter) enough... Many game developers don't exactly fill theirs either but... with Nintendo this is more of an issue given that up to the Gamecube, their game disks and carts have been notoriously limited in capacity... yet evidently many of their games do not utilise the (already limited) capacities of their disks (Luigi's Mansion and Pikmin to name but a few), which is all the more reason why they should fill them! So yeah...

First off, once again, thanks for the rep! ^ ^

4.: Aww... that's about half my Nintendo games straight in the bin under that commandment! =O But seriously, I get your point though... There's a lot of lousy sequels out there...

7.: Gears of War and Mass effect 2 spring straight to mind here! I can't stand that stop-start-stop-start approach to shoot 'em ups. I get that in reality one needs to take cover in such situations, but these are games, and like Eric said, they should be entertaining, not tedious!

9.: Or better still, why don't we just get rid of all official game mags?

First off, thanks for the complement there... (Uhm... that was a complement right?)

2.: I couldn't agree with you more! And if it were up to me I'd wipe EA and THQ off the map!

5.: I agree with you in general, but... on the other hand, I like the idea of bosses taking up to half an hour to defeat (like Meta Ridley in Metroid Prime and such) and the idea of giving ammunition some thought... But I certainly don't like it when a game makes a big deal out of tiny or casual enemies... which just sounds to me like a way of making a game seem longer than it actually is.

10.: Uhm... I don't think game developing companies have much problem in that department, or rather their publishers! With the exception of Nintendo, I'd say that profit does not lead to better games... and once again I find myself pointing my finger at EA here! But by all means I'd be interested to hear your elaboration on that.

Thank you very much for your comments guys! It seems you're getting the hang of this thread quite nicely!
