Most websites use RTMP or something to stream it that isn't directly viewable or downloadable via the browser (they usually only work in the custom-made SWF Flash app that is designed to play the video stream from that site). The NYTimes site however has a directly linkable MP4 video file (though I they probably didn't intend it to be played through any means other than their video player on the news article's page). Here are the direct links to the video file (one for 480p, one for 720p, and one for 1080p).

Not sure how long these will work for before they becomes dead though, as these video URLs that are meant to be played on-site via the site's own video player Flash (SWF) app tend to be automatically regenerated every once in a while.
