I'm cross posting this to computers and misc.
The idea: To learn python from various online resources. If this circle happens I will review possible options before it gets started, depending on who signs up. All attendants read 2-3 something like chapters (20-50 pages?) each week. Some tweaking may be required depending on how much free time people have and how much they want to commit, do whatever exercises are given, and then post their solutions in a thread, discussing the reading material and any problems they have encountered and so on. If you get horribly stuck and the book goes on about something you don't understand, I will try to point you in the right direction. The format and the degree of my involvement is a bit uncertain at the moment, but you get the general idea.
The idea is not: To unleash some horrible chore on you. This is supposed to be fun. Participation is voluntary and you can drop out any time you want. The pace is also open for discussion, and if several people have midterms or someone falls behind, it's quite possible to put the circle on hold for a couple of weeks. There are no grades at stake.
What you can expect: To learn the fundamentals of python. When you're through, you should be capable of writing simple applications. Using some external libraries, you should be able to write an IRC bot, a notepad-like program, a program that downloads a webpage and saves all the images, that type of stuff.
What you can not expect: To become a master programmer, game developer, or anything like that. That's years, maybe even a decade of practice.
What you need: A computer (PC, mac, Linux; whatever rocks your boat), and an inquisitive mind.
What I need to know: Does this sound interesting to you? If it does, please make a post with the following details. I think it's possible to go if we get something like 3 or 4 people interested in doing this.
