    Default Wanting to learn Japanese.

Hello. I was wondering if anyone here would be willing to either help me learn Japanese or put me on the right track to a way to learn. I have tried Rosetta Stone before but found it not very helpful because you didn't have to pronounce the word correctly to move on, just needed to make it sound similar. I'm very interested in the Japanese culture and would like to go there someday, but would like to know the language first. Thank you in advance for any and all help.

I strongly recommend this site and my niece uses it.

but start from learning hiragana and katakana. Once you can read and pronounce them, that is a major step into learning Japanese.

I would be willing to help. I have some unfinished Youtube playlists for learning Japanese but I'm sure they will still be of help.

I myself have found Rosetta Stone to be a waste of time. When I first started I did love "My Japanese Coach" on Nintendo DS if you have one, it goes quite far into the basics and it teaches you verbs the "proper" way ie. the 7 bases : a i u e o -te -ta. It teaches you 10 words at a time and by playing various little games you build up a score for each word, once each word's score reaches a certain point you unlock the next 10 and so on. To start everything is in Romaji and as hiragana/katakana is introduced they slowly replace words with them and after ~300 words it will start introducing Kanji. I got mine on amazon.co.uk.

I find a lot of textbooks etc will teach you in a horrible order (-masu before dictionary form (-u base)) which can really hinder your learning, I go to a night class at the moment just to give me another opportunity to use it and the number of people who are struggling with what should be simple conjugation (albeit new, eg -eba / -tara) is staggering because in their heads they start at -masu, goto -u then go on and I'm thinking to myself "what has this textbook done to these people??" (this is Japanese for Busy People) Genki is a bit better as a textbook for this but getting some actual books for japanese children or apps they use in japan for elementary school will be far more effective once you know hiragana/katakana.

The genkijapan.net videos on youtube are fun for learning basic vocab like number, counters, the weather etc. (Mary's lamb remix is hilarious)
"Japanese" ipod app is a good dictionary/memo-pad with history and bookmark lists. (red background on icon)
漢字忍者(Kanji Ninja) on android/ipod app stores are good for kanji.

I also find Minna no Nihongo to be good. I know people in Japan use this book or Japanese for Busy People.

The Japanese class I'm currently taking uses Genki. The teacher is nice but lacks the sort of instructional methods besides having us use the workbook or study on our own. I've thankfully managed to get the kana, some grammar points, some kanji and some vocab under my belt (I can understand snippets of dialogue in subbed anime). I'm thinking about doing some self study, that way I don't have to worry about failing a test just because I forgot a few words. I've also been looking for an excuse to get a Nintendo DS.
    I also have 14 untranslated light novels sitting on my hard drive ^^;

we use genki too in our japanese classes. but before it's minna no nihongo. genki i guess is fine but as long as you can read hiragana, katakana, anyting is good. you just have to know some basic sentence constructions.

If you can get your hands on these books, these are great starter textbooks:
    Minna no Nihongo
    Genki
    Japanese for Busy People

@Raven: I didn't quite like Rosetta Stone too. I am using Assimil to study French on my own (Assimil French with Ease). It's way cheaper than Rosetta and I read a lot of great reviews on this. They have Assimil Japanese with Ease so you might want to check if that is what you are looking for.

I also heard of the Michel Thomas audio programs but I have not used them for any foreign language.

I myself studied Japanese by enrolling in a Nihongo school and we used Minna no Nihongo.
