With an event initially coined the “Million Muslim March” and later changed to the “Million American March Against Fear,” the committee hopes to generate awareness about civil rights violations that Muslims have endured after the September 11 attacks that occurred nearly 12 years ago.

Basically, they're trying to claim victim status, because the events of 9/11 lead to a lot of suspicion of Muslim people. Thus 9/11 is the day which makes most sense. Sure there were a lot of Muslims that were happy about 9/11 and thought it was an act of justice, but few of them actually want to be associated with the attack.
