Default Cursive Writing: Should it still be taught?

Original Article: Cursive vs. Typing: Which should schools teach?

I'm just curious about your thoughts on this occasionally touchy subject. Some argue that cursive should be taught because it's the "traditional" way of writing and it makes writers write and think faster, while others believe the need for cursive writing has become dismal in the modern era.

Personally, I never had to learn cursive writing, and I got along just fine. The only time when I'll have problems is when I find myself unable to read others' cursive writing.

So what do you think? Should cursive be preserved? Phased out? Or do you simply not care?

By the way, only 6 out of 50 states in the US still require the teaching of cursive in their public schools' curricula. (States that still require cursive, if you're interested: Alaska, Montana, Nebraska, Texas, Virginia, Wisconsin.) I'm not sure about countries other than the US, but feel free to share about your country.

It makes you write and think faster? I don't know about you but if I actually concentrate on writing in cursive I'm 10x's more slower.

I shall time myself via stopwatch.

It took me 13 seconds to correctly write my full name in cursive.

It took me five seconds to scribble my name in cursive [my signing method]

And took me five seconds to legibly print my name.

Everyone scribbles now n days. cursive should be a thing in the past. I can hardly read it when someone does write in cursive.

"Studies" say it makes you think and write faster lol, maybe once you're really good at it through loads of practice.
I really don't know, since I can't even write anything in cursive.
And yep, I can't read cursive to save my life. Even my college professors hardly write in cursive anymore, which is good.

The way I figure, knowing how to write in cursive is part of not being an idiot. If you want to raise a generation of idiots, then by all means, don't teach them cursive.

It still has some uses, like when writing checks. Personally, I have always hated it and really wouldn't mind if it went the way of the dodo.
I need a new signature and I didn't know what to put, so I decided to throw this in.

actually, I think schools need to step it up a notch and teach all kinds of alternative fonts.

then I can finally ask the doctors and other professionals to write documents in MS bold font, so I can read their notes.

8U I had to learn cursive writing. To me, it doesn't really matter if it's taught anymore. No one every really uses it much here anyway.

The diversity of each persons personalized signature makes it beautiful. Lots of documents require singing in cursive. The authenticity of each persons signature is what makes it yours and yours alone. I generally, shoud think cursive should be taught. It's not bad to not know it, you can still get along, but it helps in some cases. When a signature will be needed.

The thing about signatures... Most signatures these days aren't even cursive. It's just a couple scribble marks. This applies to me as well. I could easily sign my checks in cursive but instead I just put the first letter followed by some half-donkey scribble marks. My mother on the other hand does still sign her name on everything in cursive. To each their own I guess. I don't see anything wrong with it still being taught in school, but I don't see anything wrong with it becoming a thing of the past either.

the chances that you will write your signature exactly the same every time is slim, but the chances that someone that doesn't know what your signature looks like (let alone be able to match it) will write it are remote to none.

I think it depends on the school. Some schools still might require cursive. I, too, say you can get by with out learning cursive.

Cursive.... I only use it to sign something. I now have my own signature.... signature. Lol.
I think teaching cursive should not be taught anymore. That time can be used for other, more practical things.

I think not being consistent with a signature is a good thing, so it's less able to be forged. c: Um, I learned cursive back in the third grade and still remember a good amount of it. But sadly, I barely have to use it. I still think it's a nice thing just know, however. One of those "just in case" lessons.

Yep, I agree with what most people said here. I don't even use cursive to sign receipts/checks lol, I just write the first letter and then scribble scribble in 2 seconds. It gives me no practical benefit whatsoever. I guess parents should still have the right to sign their kids up to learn cursive, but not all kids should compelled to learn it. Many of my friends didn't like it at all, and none, NONE of my friends write in cursive.

Not so sure about Eris' statement about cursive's relevancy to idiocy, though XD

SERIOUSLY THOSE KIDS DON'T NEED TO KNOW CURSIVE ANYMORE?
    Lucky.

Back in 6th grade they're all like, "You're going to be using this on everything from now on."
And then I get to junior high and they're like, "I want you to type this up because I can't read your handwriting."

To me cursive is tedious and annoying, it shouldn't be even thought about anymore, i mean geez, these schools are focusing on something that just isn't important anymore >.>.
Instead of thinking about our type of writing they should making us have college-like Education so we can be just like the other countries: prepared for school with a higher academic level so we can get through school faster.

I was in between grades when they phased it out in Maryland. One year we had it and the next we didn't and no one expected us to use it. My signature is an illegible scribble. I can read some cursive, but not others, and I disagree that it makes writers think and write faster. If anything, people need to slow down when they're writing and speaking and put more thought into their work.

With so much focused on keyboards and screens it's a waste of time and money to teach this. It'd be a better investment to teach the kids alchemy or sorcery. At least that would be entertaining and potentially rewarding. Not a reference to FMA.

Handwriting in general is atrocious. Mine is, as well as everyone I meet. They ought to work on that and composition skills. And reasoning...and debate. I personally think the US is far behind the world in education. In general.

I forgot cursive as quickly as I learned it. I don't even use cursive on my checks. My signature is the only cursive I've used in a long time.
