Default Should we censor WikiLeaks cables on national security grounds?

EVERY major news outlet in Australia has received a letter this week from Attorney-General Robert McClelland asking editors to consider a voluntary agreement to censor "sensitive national security and law enforcement information".

The letter has gone out amid the leaking of thousands of top secret American diplomatic cables by Wikileaks to several news organisations.
WikiLeaks, founded by Australian Julian Assange, has not yet made public the majority of the cables, including nearly 1000 originating from the US embassy in Canberra.

In his letter the Attorney-General stresses that the Federal Government is not trying to legislate to impose a censorship regime, but wants the media to consider "mutually agreed arrangements" whereby some information will be suppressed.
While the letter does not refer to Wikileaks, its timing suggests that, with about 1500 cables relating specifically to Australia expected to be released soon, the Federal Government wants a protocol to avoid the unfettered publication of any and every leak.

    So what do you think?

How is suppressing information different from censorship? You're keeping information from the public, i.e. censorship. Personally, I'm all for the leaked documents since they show how corrupt our government actually is. Though we can't really argue over it by our laws since WikiLeaks is located in Australia and as such it's subjugated to their laws and what they choose to do about it.

I'm not quite sure on the law regarding to what can and cannot be disclosed in Australia, and I'm not sure how it would even be applied considering wikileaks is based in Sweden (I think). The information is going to come out anyway, what the Attorney-General is trying to do, is nip its circulation. Most wouldn't actively go and search through wikileaks, but if the media reported on something, they would.

The only way to keep embarrassing information from getting out is to not have embarrassing information in the first place, which generally entails not lying in peoples faces about your motives. I would have hoped the US government had learned this lesson the last time someone leaked.

The government should not dictate what the press should or shouldn't print. It's the duty of the press alone to judge the harm versus merit of releasing information.
