from that list I picked Shinji. I really don't know the precise reason why, but I admire him for being able to what he does despite all the emotional grief he's going through. When compared to traditional teenaged mecha pilots he does seem wimpy, but let's be honest. If you had to pilot a monster of a machine to save the world with no prior training, anyone would hesitate, some even run away.

Her name in English name order (Given name, middle name, family name) is Asuka Langley Soryu (or Shikinami from Rebuild). Her family name can be spelled a variety of ways due to the imprecision that is inherent in Romanization of Japanese names. These would be:
