No.....Shakugan No Shana is a series with a loli heroine but it's not a lolicon series. A loli or a shota refers to a either a very young character or a character who may not be a child but looks young like a child. They do not have to do sexual things to be considered lolis or shotas. Any young, flat-chested girl from an anime can be considered a "loli".

What about chars like Etna from Disgaea? She's flat chested but I don't she'd ever be considered a loli.

A good example is Mikuru Asahina. Haruhi calls her a "moe" character. But Mikuru is not, nor looks like a preteen child because of her height and her breast size (for sure!) This makes her a "non-loli".

I don't know if you could call it a 'cliche' exactly but there seems to be a trend where a character has an eye covered up when in most cases it works perfectly fine. And it ususally has some special power or something.

Well....smiling is an indication of fondness, the nod thing is "oh they understand each other that well-they don't even need words!" So it shows the characters have formed a type of bond....and I find that cute. I'm very fond of relationships-they don't have to be romantic....paternal relationships and friendships are really nice as well.
