What's your heart rate?

My heart rate ranges in the 90s. Different sources go by different ranges of normal for heart rate. The source I use says 55-100 is normal for adolescents. Generally, the lower your heart rate is, the more efficient your heart (as mentioned is more for athletes).

Ah, now this is interesting.

I believe I'm beginning to see a pattern here where the most "laid-back" members are reporting some of the lowest heart rates, and visa-versa.

Perhaps there is a connection between heart-rate, and a persons' personality type. I think you should put up a poll on this thread. (one that you can see who voted for what).

Laid back = less exercise = higher heart rate. Do you mean like that? It doesn't work for me... at least, I just started an exercise program so my heart rate's still high. Although what you say could still factor in.

- Men diagnosed with anxiety in their late teens or early 20s are more than twice as likely to have heart disease or a heart attack later in life than their more laid-back peers, according to a new Swedish study.

As many as 28 percent of people are diagnosed with anxiety at some point in their lives, according to an editorial accompanying the study in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology.

Anxiety is more than feeling stressed out. People with anxiety disorders feel excessive or irrational worry and can have anxiety-related physical symptoms, such as fatigue, headaches, trembling, sweating, panic, and nausea.

Experts have a number of hypotheses as to why anxiety and heart disease may be linked, though the new research can't confirm that anxiety -- not some other factor -- is the cause of heart disease and heart attacks in the study.

Mine is 74 bpm.
In the hopsital, the reference was: Males: 70-80 bpm, Females: 80-90 bpm but recently, 100 bpm is considered the " new" border line.

Oh wow.. I count my heart beat every now and then.. its great to see that I am not the only one who loves to do this. It is 60 beats per minute. Sheesh..... I don't understand why it is so low.

53 BPM though that isn't as low as it has been. It might be because I don't stress so much or something but my doctor has told me it being as low as it has been could also be unhealthy.

Okay, I think its time to give some tips on how to properly count one's heart rate. Some of these numbers are normal while others are mind-boggling.

The easiest arteries to use are the carotid and radial arteries. The carotid is that nice little artery that is running down the sides of your neck. To measure from this artery (there are two of them, so take your pick), take your index finger (you don't really need more than one) and place it on the side of your neck between your jaw line and your collar bone.

The radial artery is located on the underside of your arm (as the name implies, it runs along your radius). To measure from here, take your index and middle fingers and place them on the underside of your arm (the thumb side) where your radius meets the carpals of your hand (aka your wrist). I find that measuring from here yields better results than the carotid artery because sometimes its hard to count from there when you are resting (when you are exercising, it works just great).

I measured mine on the wrist in 30 secs, doubled it and got 68.

Heart sounds (the sound is technically "lub-dub", not "dun-dun"), as the name suggests, are the sounds that your heart makes with EACH beat. The sounds do not represent a beat on their own. Each "lub-dub" is ONE heartbeat, not two.

Of course, this is irrelevant to measuring one's pulse since one cannot feel the "dub". Only the systolic pressure (the "lub") can be felt via palpation, since pressure waves from cardiac systole is what is causing the artery walls to become palpable in the first place. You can't feel the diastolic pressure by palpation no matter what you do (hell, even if you put your hand directly over your chest, you are going to have difficulty feeling it). So when you are taking your pulse, you can't feel a "lub-dub", so it doesn't matter.

Mine used to be somewhat lower, but it's now in the 60-65 range since I've been getting out of shape lately. It's pretty annoying how fast that starts happening.

As long as you haven't performed any physically demanding and/or stressful activity within ~15 minutes before the measurement it shouldn't affect the result.

I was merely pointing out that your mention of heart sounds is a little irrelevant since if one is counting their heart rate via palpation (which would be the only other way that they are measuring it unless someone has a stethoscope), they are not going to feel "lub-dub", "lub-dub" and make the mistake of counting twice.
