Actually Vocaloid is a computer program that has been released to the public. There's two versions and several voice packs. It's really quite the piece of technology to make a singing voice tied to text. But yes, there are a few albums using it. The most popular voice is Miku Hatsune.
Iv heard some of the songs on Youtube, their really good. ^^
Not really a fan at all; of either the program or the music.
The programs interface is just a hassle, and I spent far too long jump bumbling around trying to find what I was looking for. Maybe this has been repaired with recent updates or something, but at this point I don't really care.
I also don't care for music created completely artificially. There is just something lacking in it; perhaps that it does not convey any real emotion, or have any real meaning in it. It's music for the sake of music, and nothing more. It's interesting that all of the popular songs from it are all user-generated content, and it's an interesting experiment as far as that goes, but there's simply no soul in the music. For many it seems to be more about creating an image for the simulated voice/character chosen to create the song with. As far as that concept goes, some interesting things have come out of it, like Black Rock Shooter, for instance.
"The color fades along the intervals I follow."
Once again, I say the vocoder is as far as vocals should be taken, and even that should be used sparingly, or else it's just tasteless, tacky indulgence.
i still think it rocks hard
but you are right!

Well, after fearfully avoiding listening to a sampling of this vocaloid business, I caved. I figured I ought not to dismiss it as filth without at least testing my prediction.
YouTube did not fail to greet my morbid curiosity- with music I enjoy in its true form, no less. (If it's music that I've already heard, I can readily evaluate the program against a genre and even a specific song I know I like. If I don't already know the song, I could dislike the vocaloid version only because the song is terrible no matter the performance.)

My prejudice and fears have been confirmed. Vocaloids suck, and because of these two videos, I will point that out every single chance I get.
They suck. The one singing Sole Survivor sounded like it was a robot that gained sentience, rebelled against its masters, became a drag queen and eventually caught a cold before becoming inebriated and singing karaoke in some trashy dive of a bar. Incredible, but I think I'll stick with Jon and John, respectively.
Those videos may contain the most offensively bad covers (of music I actually like) I've ever heard that weren't aired on some crap television show like American Idol.
Anything that so thoroughly ruins a song is no good.
I think I might actually have to brush my teeth.
So what is this refuse? It sounds like someone tried to synthesize a voice through MIDI, failed, but discovered Satan and his demonic choir of fallen cherubs in the process and decided "Hey, what the Hell- Let's record it!"
Nonsense! Rubbish! Evil incarnate!
Ouch man that hurts...
oh well i like it and that's wat's up!

What? I tell you that I have never heard of those two songs in the original collection, nor the game. It is probably made by amateurs, crappy fan-made versions. These are not originally produced. Anyone who has the program can make songs. And of course being made by Amateurs and turned into covers of Crappy songs that you like, you shalt generalize. Not.

Before you even think about spouting nonsense about some crap you randomly found. These are the originals. Do the ones you found look professional? No? Then stfu please.
できねぇ時?

First, Riiko, wow, you really must like Miku. Though I do agree most people tend to hate it because most of it is user generated. And yes they aren't that great. The worst of which are theme songs for games/animes done at a high pitch and what I can only assume is Miku on fast forward. Though at the same time several people I know don't like songs created with Vocaloid due to the artificial tint to the voices created by it. Though the fact it's artifical allows the voice to sing in ways a traditional singer can't. Not sure if Vocaloid is the future for music but the technology could have uses elsewhere.
It must be because I'm currently playing the game. Sorry if I get overly-defensive. =p I just hate it when people make sweeping statements. If you use it correctly, it doesn't sound bad. I've seen the programme and it's really complicated, not to mention the visualizations. Other uses?
できねぇ時?
そん時ゃ諸共心中だよ
The visualizations are most likely another program. Vocaloid is voice only. And yeah the game is fun but not very forgiving if you mess up. Though I haven't played Diva in a while since I'm addicted to Audiosurf which converts any song into a playable level. I am trying to figure out how to use the program but I don't plan to ever post anything. Just mess around with it when I'm bored.
The game combines visualization, so...It's mostly in the rythm. Also...what platform is audiosurf on?
できねぇ時?
そん時ゃ諸共心中だよ
I meant in fan creations. Though most use still images. I know a few I saw had to be something like 3DMax but not sure of others. Audiosurf is on the PC. I got mine via steam. Not sure if it's available non-steam but I'm sure it is.
Hmm, I did read once that it takes someone at least a month to make a song using the program. And months to make it good by tweaking the notes and make other people listen to it so they can give suggestions etc...
I wanted to try it out too but when I read that... I was like, "never mind, I'll just play Halo or something."
Well, as for being a fan, I only like Hatsune Miku but I gotta say that there are only a number of songs that are good like "I miss you" and "The secret garden." Hmm, as for being a song with "no soul," I guess thats why they made the song, "melody." If you can understand the lyrics, its clearly made to answer that statement. I agree that there is something lacking but i still like it either way.
and to Lord Footnote, please do not label things like that. Other people are fans, as a sign of respect, do not make hasty generalizations or if you really think that it sucks then say so in a proper manner so you won't offend anyone. You think it sucks? well, guess what, at times, I do too. But I don't say that its evil incarnate. a little respect goes a long way.
Truth is a thing which only appears to those who have observed, considered, and made a choice. At the end of the path you chose lies the truth...Believe in it and continue without faltering.
Two versions? I thought there were three, you know:
KAITO and MEIKO - 1
Miku Hatsune, Rin Kagamine and Len Kagamine - 2
Luka Megurine and Gakupo - 3
Try the Nico Nico Chorus versions if you don't like the originals. They're a lot better.
Here's a pretty well-known Vocaloid song. Miku Hatsune's Melt (yup, the PV's hand-drawn.) :
And here's a Nico Nico Chorus version:
It isn't the best one but it's the only original version of Melt I could find on Youtube. >.>

MIKU TIME~!
Riiko, I hope you and I can share some fan songs soon
"Originally produced?" What exactly are you trying to say? "Officially sanctioned," maybe?
And, yes, they are crappy; they were a perfectly convenient vector for my disdain and scorn.
Which, by my reasoning, means that there will be a lot of crap. Which there is. This disappoints me somewhat, as I typically prefer the ratio of goodness to crap to be well over one- usually aroung five or better. Your point being?Anyone who has the program can make songs.
Crappy songs that I like? I don't know about "Sole Survivor," but "Siberian Khatru" is masterful. Have you listened to the originals before judging them? And of course being made by Amateurs and turned into covers of Crappy songs that you like, you shalt generalize. Not.
Anyway, if you get to assert absent argument that songs that I enjoy are crappy, then doesn't that free me up to do the same? Say, with the vocaloids?
Your video tags were all screwed up. For future reference, you delete most of the URL up until the part that follows "v=" when using YouTube tags.Listen to this:

Anyway, they didn't leave me all tingly and craving more, either. (To be fair, I didn't brush me teeth this time.) If you'd like, I could of course criticize the whole notion of the vocaloid from scratch instead. I was just more amused by my over-the-top, crazed first post, which actually, in a roundabout way, kinda made fun of overzealous fans angrily arguing with other overzealous fans.
It's just becoming a bother now.
Well, I don't think search results are quite random, but whatever. Before you even think about spouting nonsense about some crap you randomly found, These are the originals. Do the ones you found look professional? No? Then stfu please.
And actually, they still just look like a gimmicky bag of silliness to me. That the shoddy 'music' was accompanied by an equally shoddy but apparently professionally created CG animation means little to me.
I don't know if you're getting me yet, but I also loathe the compositions, not just the covers. No amount of professional productions and tweaking can save a poor melody.
I suppose I shouldn't be surprised, though. If popular music and fads are cyclical (they are) then the novelty records will be here again very soon.
Vocaloids are not the product, are not the art itself. They do not work autonomously, producing melodies of their own volition. They follow the instructions of a user.
Therefor, I feel that they can only be dealt with as instruments. Given, then, the astounding lack of usefulness next to existing instruments and synthesizers and whatnot, and given that everyone who seems to love the vocaloids seems to also love music I cannot stand- basically just Japanese music and anime theme songs- I reject vocaloids, much like I reject, say, the sitar for most of the time it features in pop and rock. It's certainly unique, it's timely, for a while it could even be popular, but it has no lasting entertainment value, and eventually becomes a peculiar little curiosity.
It's called hyperbole. You know, grossly exaggerate something to make a point exceedingly clear? I don't honestly think they're evil manifested in cheap CG, I just have a strong aversion to them.and to Lord Footnote, please do not label things like that. Other people are fans, as a sign of respect, do not make hasty generalizations or if you really think that it sucks then say so in a proper manner so you won't offend anyone. You think it sucks? well, guess what, at times, I do too. But I don't say that its evil incarnate
Besides, fans should be able to handle a few harsh words form some semi-anonymous loon on an Internet message board.
Hoo-ray for subjective opinion coupled with srs bsns.
I love Vocaloid music so much! There's some great stuff if you search into the very bowls of YouTube. But the thing is I don't just love them for their music but the storys behind them and their personalitys, there's a lot of really good user generated videos and animations that really do them justice. I like the funny videos that tell a story a lot. ^-^ One of my favourites has got to be this one for both he music and the awesome video. <3
The best story telling one has got to be this one for the great ideas and the good animation. It's like making an anime with voices already at the ready for you to make them say what you wish. ='3
This is also my first post here. ^-^
~Sig made by me~
I quite like vocaloids, ho hum. Utau's too! (Utau's being fan made ones like Kasane Teto/forthosewhoain'tintheknow) I won't listen to them if they sound too, idk how to say it but, bad. :/
I prefer the sound of Gakupo's voice compared to some of the others orz.
The only Miku song I like.
Gakupo /not the best example but I love it
a normal song of his
I like Utaus a lot too despite them being fanmade, some can be atrocious tho!
I come from the vocaloidotaku forum. But I grew apart from vocaloid and came here! I'm still Lunary in the forum though.
i have tried playing with this program. it definately produces some cool effects, but i havent found a use for it in my own productions. i suppose there are some useful applications when doing remixes and such, but if overused, it doesnt sound that appealing to me(this is only my opinion) maybe im old school, but i prefer the traditional way to remix and cover songs, so ill just stick with Ableton and Reason....anything less would be uncivilized!!!
in my head theres a greyhound station, where i send my thoughts to far off destinations.... so they may have a chance of finding a place, thats far more suited than here (ben gibbard)
