Change in punctuation to change tone.

What are some changes that you do in punctuation to change the tone of what you're going to say.

It's freakin' hard to tease over the internet. Especially girls.

If I were to say:

You're such a jerk.

I would sound like a complete ahole.

If I were to say:

You're such a jerk!

I sound like I'm joking. The biggest problem with this is it sounds like I'm always excited.

i usually just use commas to start a new thing that dousn't require a full stop.

I feel emoticons are best for expressing emotion. For example:

I hate you.

or

I hate you ^^

or

I hate you lololololol *glomps*

Haha. The third one is gross.

When I'm serious I use periods, no faces (:D, xD, o.o) and I use their name when I'm typing it out.
When I'm joking.. my good grammar dies and the faces come in.
