Default Asteroid Theory, Is it full of holes?

    http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases...0427010803.htm
So what killed off the Dinosaurs?
Personaly I never thought it was an Asteroid, it just did not fit. it might have helped but dinosaurs were some of the most powerful animals this world had ever seen. Big ones, small ones, meat eating, and plant eating, and some ate both. They had a lot of time to grow thier diversity in ways that bones could never tell us.
" None of the other great mass extinctions are associated with an impact"
    So why would dinosaurs?
Oh here is a little something for dino lovers.... in america

And if you DONT like dinosaurs then this is for you.

Well....it's been said that the humongous dust cloud from the asteroid is what killed off the dinosaurs, not the asteroid itself. :P Which is more believable because of all the toxins that were in it...

All paleontology is to be taken with a serious grain of salt. There is, after all, only so much information you can extract about events 65 million years ago.

Anyway, as for why the dinosaurs died while mammals did not probably has more to do with size than anything else. The bigger you are, the less adaptable you are to new environments (it has to do with the physics of scaling, surface to weight ratio and whatnot). And when all bigger animals had perished, and mammals competed with reptiles on even footing instead of as the new kids on the block, mammals won.

I would not say we won. It has not ended yet. We are in the lead, but who knows how long that can last. ( Prolly for while. )

I don't really buy the asteroid alone was responsible for dinosaur extinction. Bakker put out a theory that it was a mix of loss of biodiversity plus climate change and one separate ecosystems mixing. If the asteroid did anything, it would have just been the equivalent of a mercy killing. Not everything has to be so dramatic.

Survival, thats what I think. I don't buy the asteroid physics either. Sure it has been proven life can grow over 2,000 years again, but there are other theories that have may have co-existed, like radiation, a pandemic occurred with the loss of DNA, nature finds it way, and this is my cause and effect. Or however, I think that dinosaurs never really existed and it was a government cover-up, but that will lead to a lot of government cooperation alone. Sure, palentologist and archeologist founded a lot of extractions of bones, but it may have a cover-up to it.

Hey you never know. -- Shrugs -- We weren't there.

Interesting that you bring this up now, just a week or so after a formal panel of 41 scientists from various fields met in Mexico, and after reviewing 20 years of evidence, came to the conclusion that all signs indeed point to an asteroid collision.

The formal article was published in Science magazine, though it's a subscription-only site, so here's a Reuters article which gives the jist of it.

Granted, it was pretty much agreed on by most that it was an asteroid collison, with some holding out to the idea that it was a series of supervolcanic eruptions.

Also, while the impact itself probably didn't kill too many dinosaurs relative to the whole population, what Eris said pretty much sums it up: a rapid change in environment that their large builds could not adapt to.

I can't really buy any theory, but I do start to think sometimes that the dinosaurs were purposefully killed to make room for humans and other mammals. Simply put, we would have never survived to evolve this far with every kind of vicious dinosaur running around; they were simply too tough. Now I don't mean to go into some kind of creationist bull, but Darwinists are absolute idiots to think everything was a linear step-by-step evolution.

Did I, per chance, upset the church of Darwin? Let's see; christians tell not to fly in the sky and see what's up there because their god lies there, and if I do, I'm a heretic; muslims tell not to look under a woman's burka because their god lies there, and if I do they call me a dhanb; darwinists tell me not to ask "if man evolved from ape, why are there still apes around?" because their hypothetical breaking points lie there, and if I do, I'm an idiot.
The annoying part is that the first two had a piece of our mind and are still trying to pull their pants back on, but the Darwinists stand proud in their now popular conviction, passing it off for unchallengeable science, and not wanting to be questioned about it. Well screw you and your stiff beliefs, take your Darwin awards and give them to yourselves!

I dont care if you have your own views, but do not go around insulting things like this. You prolly just insulted a large number of members here. thats my real issue here.
Oh yes and your logic is flawed.
Apes and people are both around because some choose to come down from tree's ect... and other choose diffrent things but both lived on. Thus you can have both.

PROTIP: The theory of evolution does not say we evolved from apes, it says that we had a common ancestor species.

Also, the entire species does not evolve as a whole, not matter where they are; it happens relative to the environment that groups of the species are living in. It is not necessarily linear nor all-encompassing of the species.

Perhaps people wouldn't be so upset if you actually produced something sensible instead of spewing nonsense. No "darwinist" who knows what he's talking about would claim that humans descended from the apes you see today. Gorillas, orangutangs, chimpanzees, etc. are all modern animals who have evolved from a common ancestor, an ancestor which they share with us.

While everyone has a right to hold their own belief, their beliefs are by no means sacred. If you don't want people to scrutinize your beliefs, you should keep them to yourself.

I never thought it was an Asteroid, it just did not fit. it might have helped but dinosaurs were some of the most powerful animals this world had ever seen.
Y'know, when you're talking about an asteroid, you can be talking about something just as big as Earth is. Earth could 'survive' (as in, still be in 1 piece) a direct collision with the moon, so an effing huge ateroid could easily wipe out all large organisms and keep the Earth intact....and asteroids can travel manymanymany times faster than a bullet, there's no question as to if they're strong enough to do the job.

Actually, it's funny you mention that. The most popular explanation for the moon is that it's the remains of a mars-size planet colliding with the earth way back in the day.

Though such collisions will eradicate all life. Not just the big lifeforms. The kinetic energy will melt the planet's surface. In fact, the energy from the tidal forces from a larger planet merely closely passing by would likely have a similar effect.

Another theory I have could be pesticides and plague epidemics, such as deadly diseases, dinosaurs leukocytes systems couldn't keep up with the diseases carried on by wasps, and ancient masquitos may have carried a small amount of lethal doeses may have contributed into dinosaurs artieries, killing them easily going through the heart of the dinosaur, or another theory could have been said that parasites traveled through blood cells killing off tiny neurons from drinking water, or food that has been died off.

Not quite. A large planetary body might glance off the Earth and leave it intact, but something as big as the Earth colliding with the Earth will not.

The theory Eris mentions involves exactly this; a glancing blow, and nothing more, that tore a section of the Earth off while it was still pretty young. This would've predated the dinos by a good long bit, though, and as Eris also said would have ended all life on the planet were any present at the time.

I thought the moon split out from Earth, hence tectonic movement.

I heard about that on that 'The Universe' show. But that shows makes me feel pretty pathetic with their talk of infinite universes and crazziness and so forth. Still awesome.

Key word 'intact', it doesn't mean it wouldn't easily kill everything on said planet. And Eris is right about the tidal stuff from the other planet completely washing over (and killing) everything.

No, that isn't the effect I speak of. While the tides would indeed be disastrous, it gets much, much worse. When a large mass passes closely by the earth, it deforms the earth with it's uneven and changing gravitational pull. This deformation causes vast quantities of frictional heat to be generated. As in: Enough to melt the surface of the planet.
