lol the title made me go DUH!! SeaWorld Trainer Killed by Killer Whale XD
A sad and most unfortunate event, indeed. My condolences to the family and friends involved.
On a separate note, I'm not sure if this story is worth the time and attention being given it. Regardless, it's people's time and they can give it whatever and/or whomever they choose.
My thanks to Xey Oiz for the awesome new set.
"Screw being normal and be awesome instead!"
I read it was possibly the trainers hair that brushed shamu's nose that triggered a attack or defence response. And that they arent going to destroy or punish him, just study new training and show procedures.
I wouldnt go so far as to call it slavery or animal cruelty for keeping the whale, I think he has a lovely relationship with its trainers. Just a bad mistake.
I really have no sympathy for this trainer. The Whale has form. They also captured it from the sea's in Iceland, so essentially it's somewhat domesticated, but it's still a wild animal.

Seriously, these sort of things are bound to happen sooner or later when working with wild animal life. Even domestic animals and pets go berserk when they feel threatened enough. You just can't fully tame the beast =/
Anyone who spends enough time with predators eventually gets killed. Everyone but the Governor of California
Lol that kid who witnessed it with her mother will forever have a fear of Free Willy.
Does killer whale taste good? Hmm.
If each mistake being made is a new one, then progress is being made.
This is a plot by the Japanese to justify eating whales. Did you notice how suzumi, AF's resident Japanese girl made a joke FIRST and THEN offered condolences?
You can almost hear her fufufu'ing in the background. Don't be fooled!

OMG That's horrible! I personally have only been to sea world once when I was 4 1/2 and can't actually remember much about it though! But that is a horrible way to die....killed by something you love to do!
"You call me weird like it's a bad thing!"------------------------------"If I'm a nut and I eat nuts does that make me a cannibal?"------------------------------"Sanity is over reated you should try be a little crazy sometime!"------------------------------"If you like my cookies then stop complaining!"------------------------------"I am the cookie sprite...fear me and my cookies of DOOM!"
The idea that the whale might have been acting out of fun, just "playing", does not seem all that ridiculous to me... considering that an animal of lesser intelligence would be incapable of actually "playing". Killer whales are incredibly intelligent, however, it looks like they are "playing" with seals when they teach their young how to knock them off of pieces of ice in order to get them into the water to hunt them. They make large waves on purpose in order to knock seals into the water and they display this behavior when they teach their young how to hunt. So perhaps it might have appeared to be playful on accident in a way, but at the same time there may have been something more sinister going on inside that whale's brain while it fatally attacked that person.
Killer whales are incredibly dangerous animals compared to how pop culture has portrayed them, I suppose, although that shouldn't be news to anyone if you have simply watched some documentaries or something on TV.
This is a work related death and it is tragic and I am saddended about the individual who was killed and their loved ones.
However, I don't think those whales should be there to begin with. In fact I believe that no exotic animals (non-domestic) of any kind should be kept as pets besides smaller animals that require a special kind of interest, since then the owner of such animals is less likely to abuse or mistreat them, or neglect them... considering that most people don't want a large snake or lizards or something of that sort as a pet and it's more of a special interest, which follows in my logic in that the person who wants to own such a pet will take better care of them than a lot of random people care for their domestic pets like cats and dogs.
Moreover I am an ethical vegetarian based on how animals are treated, WHILE THEY ARE ALIVE, before they are slaughtered for meat. I do not believe meat is murder, however I do believe that all animals should be treated with respect, decency and compassion, and certain conditions concerning these animals in factory farms, slaughterhouses, ect. should be altered. I also believe that the demand for meat needs to subside and the general public should cut back on their consumpton of meat, particularly red meat (for both ethical and health reasons)... not only that but I believe that large corporations that dominate the landscape and provide cheap meals to people who slaughter millions upon millions of animals for food need to be removed from our society. Again I believe this not because of the fact that animals are killed for food...but the nature of the industry itself, in that even with regulations and rules.... (which were brought upon by animal rights organizations, mind you, so don't say they have anything to do with affecting change and simply using these animal rights regulations as excuses as to your apathy concerning certain issues).... cows, chickens, pigs, ect. are treated very poorly and their well being, as sentient beings such as ourselves (humans), is of exceedingly less concern than profit, particularly with entities like McDonalds. I shouldn't even call it an entity, and no one should recognize a corporation as a living person, even if legally they are treated as such... when in fact, corporations themselves look at entire populations of people as objects, and not living entities... this sickens me.
What also sickens me is the lack of understanding of animal emotion and behavior in relation to the practices of the meat industry and other aspects of our society that deal with non-human sentient beings, which is what they are. I say this because, to drive this point home deeper, they have emotions. If someone beats a dog, the dog cowers in fear in a corner. The dog experiences pain obviously, but the dog also experiences emotions linked to that pain, such as depression. This should be obvious to anyone who has witnessed anything like that happening, a common example of something many people should be able to immediately observe. Do you really think that non-human animals are mere objects without complex emotional reactions to how their obviously, superior rulers treat them? I say superior in an intellectual sense, however, I do not think that lives and the welfare of those lives is worth less than our own simply because they can't speak for themselves. Animal rights and human rights do not interfere with one another, they are parallel. And don't try to tell me I am wrong because a few Nazis believed in animal welfare.. while true, that's a ridiculous way to argue against the welfare of animals because it was at one time associated with fascism, which has absolutely nothing to do with animal rights to begin with.
In fact, might I suggest that when the rulers, leaders, CEOs, bosses, ect. start treating people more fairly, they will progressively start treating animals fairly as well, in general, as a whole society... in fact this has already happened, this should be obvious to anyone.
I do not believe anyone should make excuses for how humans treat animals by either simply comparing ourselves to the natural order, or other animals, or by comparing ourselves to ridiculous excuses like tradition or religion.... humans have the ability to REASON, humans have the ability to make ethical/moral judgements about our ever so complicated society which is obviously quite different than the natural order in which other non-human animals must survive in... in which case, dismissing animal rights issues by comparing our nature to the natural world is absurd, considering that our society is obviously so far advanced yet we cannot pause one moment and think about how it would feel for some of us to be in the shoes of those animals we so highly depend upon in order to survive.... yet we really don't depend on them, corporate "entities" say that we depend on them and then people make quick, stupid judgements about it and don't even realize that those windowless, cold concrete floored factory farms may be inhumane or something... particularly when you look at how gross some of the health issues related to the over consumption of meat is (particularly Americans), which can be linked to the corporate dominated landscape... we are not talking about living off of the land here, so don't even play that card.
I had to edit this again because I shouldn't double post, sorry:
I am not sure if I would call it slavery, but those whales being there is cruel because they are restricted from moving freely as they would in the wild. However well they are treated. How far is a killer whale's range in their lifetime, really? Not like it matters, as if even if their range was limited in their natural habitat that would make that issue irrelevant. Although I am not sure myself how the whales truly feel, but neither does anyone else eh?
One thing you can't put under a microscope is emotion, however you can observe animal behavior and try to imagine yourself in their position and observe their physical reactions to things. Science is unwilling to make assumptions about things that threaten "progress", even when it's as clear as day.
So the bottom line is, I think animals being unable to talk to humans is the primary reason why people lack compassion for them. That's a pretty dumb excuse, you won't admit to it and you will still attempt to justify things based on your own limited perception of our psuedo-paradise cushioned by the backs of the 3rd world and of the animals in question.

Wow Shamu killed another person. I've heard about all the trainers being injured or dieing so this does not surprise me whatsoever. How many more times does this have to happen before the shock effect wears off.
Set made by me

This is all I have to say:

Enough said.
Not, not enough said.
typical.
I love South Park too, however I only find about 15% of the jokes in it to be actually humorous.
And not because I am a transgender, bisexual, gay, Catholic, satanic person who goes to church anyway because he is a freaking brainwashed telezombie and still clings into what little hope he had left of his family ever accepting him... either that or some uber-sensitive new age/part-time wiccan/part-time christian child rearing woman aged 30-62
It's because most of it is stupid and extremely repetetive. And oh god the voices are so annoying after watching that show since I was like 10 years old? The humor is extremely repetetive, ironic that they would write an episode about Family Guy's supposed lack of fresh material when they themselves are just as bad, with the exception of how South Park's humor is 85% less funny and 85% more middle school humor than Family Guy, and Family Guy has many different types of jokes, it is not merely just flashbacks about two random topics or people or something. That's ridiculous and I will ridicule anyone who says otherwise, thanks.
Otherwise, nice attempt there.

I'll have to agree to this.
I think it also goes for all animals in captivity and only USED for entertainment.
This tends to be a big news, but how about the Barnum and Bailey Circus?
They have trained lions, elephants, monkeys etc.
But we don't pay much attention to it.
Double standard anyone?

That is pretty messed up, though I guess they're just wild animals and acting out of instinct.
