I tried getting into the "Anime Club" when I was at high school. For what reason, I don't know.

It was mostly full of nerdish virgins (all guys, as I recall, I was the only female), who would giggle every time they saw a panty flash or boob. Not to mention that this "club" was not supervised, so the only "Anime" they enjoyed watching was basically anything with panty shots and boobs.

I did get called "lame" for liking Sailormoon, though. I should have seen that coming.

That, and I got tired of people not knowing the difference between "Chinese" and "Japanese".

Most of my friends would know what anime is, as in Doraemon, at least. But I doubt most of them likes anime and/or manga like I do. It actually depends on the exposure of Japanese culture to us. I'm exposed to Japanese anime and manga since I read and watched Yuyu Hakusho. In my opinion, the more you are exposed to something, the more you're going to like it.

in scotland anime/manga is pretty far from the mainstream and is considered fairly nerdy, i tend to keepm the fact that i am into it pretty on the down low.i know a couple of others at my school that are into it but in a school of around 400 kids 3 people arnt many. like a few people have said i enjoy it as a way to escape reality . maybe in the states it is more mainstream .

Has the movie forty year old virgin written all it. I also find it annoying when people call anime Chinese. It makes me want to shove Chinese food down their throat sometimes, but I usually keep it intact.

It's mainstream enough that Conan O'Brian went to Manga Entertainment Studio's and did a skit on Ghost in the Shell, but not so mainstream that anyone actually understood why it was funny. The same goes for the skit in 30 Rock about the love pillows.

You're not unique in any way for liking anime and manga. If you tally up all the people that go to conventions you're probably looking at about 100,000 anime fans (or at least people that are aware of anime). That's 100,000 "unique" people in one country alone. It just varies by where you live, your culture, your friends, etc.

Wow, interesting posts. In my high school, only a small number of kids were into anime and manga(including me). I don't like generalizing, but I speak the truth when I say that it was only a few martial artsy type people, and goth or emo kids that really liked anime. They even had their own special section of seats in the cafeteria. When I tried to show anime to some classmates in Carpentry class in Junior year, they all laughed and called it "Cartoon Porn." In senior year, the subject was brought up about anime and manga in my Carpentry class and all of my classmates had only three things in their mind: Asian Cartoon Sex, bondage, and loling so hard I swear they're ignorant, but I don't blame them for not having been exposed to other cultures outside their own. Even in history class, everyone would laugh at a culture(specifically Asian) that was not part of America.

I'm proud to say that i managed to convert my friends, my classmates and my schoolmates to anime and manga lovers. All i did was bring a volume of Love Hina to school and when they saw the cover, clad with half naked beauties they were all over it. Soon they were begging for more and i supplied. I even managed to convert my army mates.

They cannot resist the lure of ecchi and boobies. But Love Hina does have a good story and humor so it helped a lot. Now they're all watching bleach, naruto and full metal alchemist. I think anime and manga is on its way to becoming mainstream. Many artistes and celebrities read anime and manga and are influenced by it. Kanye West watches anime. Samuel L Jackson too.

It is an open secret that most people who like anime do not want to reveal it proudly in the public. Though, it generally depends on the distribution and publicity of anime in that particular area. For instance, it wouldn't be too hard to reveal that you are a big fan of anime in Japan where almost everyone from grandpa to parents to their children knows and love anime. I wouldn't say the same thing if you are in, say, Iran instead.
