What do you look for in a relationship partner?

Ok, so I guess i'll add actually something to the topic now, considering I haven't already.

My "standards" are realistic, i'd like to think. They'd need to have some/most of these attributes:

- Smart, without being arrogant
- Confident, without being haughty
- Understanding, kind, caring, thoughful
- A sense of humor that goes well with my own
- We'd have to get along and have at least some things in common
- A personality that doesn't resemble a bowl of diarrhea would be nice

As for physical appearance, being in shape in nice, but I actually really don't find a chiseled, perfect, GQ-model guy to be all that attractive. It's nice to look at, but also kind of cardboard stand ... ish. A guy who looks like an actual man and not a ken doll, is nice. Muscles are also great, but nothing too ... big.

I'd like him to be somewhat authoritative where and when it matters, but not to the point of being abusive and/or controlling. Or demeaning.

And, I won't date someone overly materialistic and/or vain. After all, why be in a relationship if you're in love with yourself and not the person you're with?

Hardy, and Miss Moonlight, leaving because after a while, maybe a long while, you're not getting a part of a relationship that you expect and want is not selfish. If anything, it's avoiding unnecessary discomfort. As unruley put it, it means he and she weren't right for each other. He knows what he wants in a relationship, which is apparently mutual want in a relationship. At 26 I think he has a good argument for knowing what he wants based off his own experiences.

Selfish would be trying to force the issue, which it's pretty clear he isn't. It would be me trying to hook up with you and using dating to do it. Unruley isn't saying he wants a relationship that centers on sex, just that he wants sex to be part of the relationship.

Also, it depends how old you are when you debate about this subject because let's say if your both fifteen and your in a relationship and the man wants sex after a month, but the girl does not. Does this automatically mean the boy should dump the girl because he isn't getting the sex? Now I don't wanna hear the typical "oh teenage love isn't real" comment. As more and more people flock to the internet within the next 20 years, I wouldn't be suprised if online dating becomes the "norm". By that time, the ratio of (as you put it) "Depressed looking for attention" to "regular" people should be about the same as it is now in real life.

Just like how 10 years ago, most all people that used message boards were tech-savy guys like Eris. Nowadays, that's not the case anymore.

In reminder of this topic, my mind will probably change over time but as for now this is what I look for in a guy:

Personality~ Always is first to me. I would want a guy that would always be there for me, strong enough to protect me or at least has the heart to try his best and give me compliments but not all the time. Just every so often and also be protective at the right moment! Please no obsessing over me. That is just plain creepy.

Looks~ A cute smile or nice eyes. Not super pale. Not to fat but not so skinny where I can see all the ribs in your body... I also like a guy that dresses well and looks good in his clothes. If it doesn't look right on you then why wear it? But that all depends.

Sex~ I'm to young for it but when I get older, if sex is going to be a constant need then he has to respect if I'm ready or not and wait on me. If he doesn't wait on me then there's nothing I can do. In my opinion, sex is mostly an agreeable or non-agreeable need in a relationship. Meaning if both don't agree then there should be no sex until they do.

And other add-ons would be to have a guy that makes me smile and knows the right things to say to me to make me happy.

He should be understandable, considerate, most definitely trustworthy and devoted which occurs if it's one of those serious relationships.

Also, he should still have a life and hang out with his friends. Controlling is wrong and I believe that either being there with him or hearing the events that went on while he was with his friends would give you a better view of himself and his true personality.

Haha!! Nobody messes with me on that one! I can put up a good fight...(not like i sound like a mad woman or anything...) But you do have to stand up for yourself whenever possible.

The most important thing for me is someone who can make me laugh! Also: Honesty, appreciative, kind, someone positive, someone who works, very independant, confident with themselves or life in general, definately NOT vain (excessivly)..Sex would be the bottom of my list, i like to get to know someone, stay friends, have fun, etc...things happen for a reason, and not jump the gun. I hate people who are too forward, who texts you every five minutes, someone whos too clingy...haha i think you get the drift!

I basically look for 3 things in a girl.
-They have to like video games and anime.
-They have to be honest and faithful.
-They must be able to handle me and what some people call "baggage"

I agree, same here in the UK, people are so wrapped up with looks and think that they have their own individual style even though they look like all the rest of them, barbie, tanned, straightened hair, wearing just belts, and im not being horrible but the girls around here have cried wolf so many times going home with guys when its their fault for looking like they are these days, ive seen girls much much younger than me who are in school and they look my age, when i was in school, i never had a (recent style decent haircut)...i wore what i want and didnt care what others thought, i had my own large group of friends and we protected eachother...anyway enough for the babbling lol....(many apologies)....same for the men too, they are so stuck up their backsides they dont even notice whats around them and just want to be it IT crowd so badly, aahhh...whats this world coming to? I know theres decent people out there somewhere!

Hair is actually both referenced too looks and personality. Hair can be related to one's personality because the color they dye tells a lot about the person. Bright colors on a girl could mean preppy, and if a boy dyes his hair pink he's one that likes to look for attention.

Being 29 I think when I say "I found what I want" I can believe it. My boyfriend is gorgeous ^.^, he has style, ambition, responsibility, a great sarcastic sense of humor much akin my own. He is tall, and skinny but not too skinny; just right. Dark innocent puppy eyes, perfect teeth, huge smile. Those are just on the surface. Underneath the looks, he's extremely shy and reserved but he's a class clown with dry humor. He isn't afraid to speak his mind, because of that I know he'll never lie to me. He's honest, and respectful. He is helpful, romantic and doesn't take my crap.
