    Default Comic Books

Hey I figured since you guys are into Anime and Manga I would think a good deal of you are into Comic Books as well. I am thinking of getting into Comics a little BUT it feels more confusing than getting into Manga can anyone recommend to me any good Comics? preferablly ones that aren't hard to get the first to the series for? also, I don't like things like Batman or Superman...I was thinking something thats more of a..darker, more extreme kinda comic? (but not pervasive..like nudity) just something darker and less silly feeling than the traditional DC comic stuff.
    Did someone call for Dan?

one of my fave comics that is not a manga is the graphic novel of Terry prattchet's discworld the colour of magic, its 2 vols long and is based on his first 2 books one of the same name as the comic, its about a world on the back of a big turtle that swins in space, anyways in this world all the things from fantasy are real and are made fun of at the story goes, anyways these first 2 books are about Rincewind the screw up wizard and his chance meeting with Twoflower the the first ever tourist with more holiday money than brains, who hires Rincewind to be his guild, as the plot goes one we find out why Rincewind is such a screw up in the first place.

the comic of it was done when I was a kid so its not too flashy like today's, plus its an English comic.

thats about it without spoiling too much.

You have no idea. There is a big beef between anime/manga fans and comic book fans. Chances are few people read comic books in this forum.

I read a few comics, but it's mostly the Flash. Whatever you do, do not read indie comics.

I really don't know. It's probably because animu fans consider Japanese comics and animation to be superior to western ones. Go to a comic book forum with a Japanese name and see how they treat you. Make sure to put a picture of Naruto in your signature.

    Heh, you'd be surprised.

However, most comic fans I've met have respect and even watch/read certain anime/manga.

    Like...Big O for example.
Big O? We can relate to that. It's Japanese Batman in a giant robot for crying out loud.
DB/Z (Screw GT)? A lot of us grew up with it, have fond memories of it, and seem to like it more than most anime fans do. Probably because we didn't know what the hell the diffrence was between anime and western animation.
The list goes on. Cowboy Bebop, Guyver, Berserk, ect ect.
I've even seen some cival discussions on newer stuff like Gurren Lagann.

Theres only really three things that annoy most comic fans about anime.
-mainstreams like Bleach, Naruto, Inuyasha, ect. For they lack story structure that's any good and the first two went straight to hell after the first arc.
-the KAWAI DESU NEEEEECHAAAAAAAAN LOLI MO KAAWAAAIIII tripe that's spread across anime fandom like the plague.
-The things they do to some of our characters. Like Wolverine and Spider-Man.

And anime/manga fans, despite going to see every new bloody marvel movie and nolanverse batman film, think comic books are nothing but super heroes (Which...Honestly...Kamen Rider, Hikaider, Super Sentai, Ultraman, and so on...Not super heroes much?)
    which just isn't the case.
And I also have met some anime fans who feel Japan is the motherland and unless it's made there, or another part of Asia, it's not worthy enough to be a doorstop let alone entertainment, yet not a single one of them that i've met has lived an any asian country.
None of them are even Asian for petes sake! In fact, I've met plenty of asian anime/manga fans who LIKE AMERICAN COMICS.
    Why?
BECAUSE THEY'RE ONE OF THE FEW DEMOGRAPHICS IN THIS MESS WHO REALIZE IT'S ALL MORE OR LESS THE SAME CRAP.
Theres good manga, there's crap manga.
Theres good comics, theres crap comics, and theres Alan Moore.

    TL;DR
    Comic Fans like to rage.
    Anime Fans like to rage.

    Anyway
Good reads if you're looking into comics.

    Planet Hulk
    Grant Morrisons run on Batman
    The Dark Knight Returns
    Y: The Last Man
pretty much everything Alan Moore's ever touched a pen to. Especially Killing Joke, Watchmen, and V for Vendetta
    Bone
The entire run of Ultimate Spider-Man (It's great since Benis wrote all 120 some issues, and about 100 of them are all drawn by mark bagely, so you get a consistance in both artwork and writing throughout the entire series)

Take two of those, and call me in the morning.

I'm currently obsessed with the Walking Dead. If you have any interest in zombies at all its a must buy.

Pretty much this. I would also recommend Batman Year one. One of my favorite bat comics.

I didn't like the killing Joke. It did have some epic parts but the ending was far too anti climatic and I didn't like the jokers back story.
But V for Vendetta is the best comic I've ever read and its a must get. As is the Watchmen which is almost equally as awesome.
This is a Sig. It's horribly out of date.
