I think the current reasoning as for not having a single birthday thread is the sheer amount of birthday posts we get. There's usually at least one birthday almost per day, and most of those threads rack up a good page or two of posts. So that's at least ~ 30 posts a day, if not more. Therefore, such a birthday thread would turn into pandemonium pretty much instantly. Keeping track of who you're congratulating would be very difficult, and new birthdays would drown in the congratulations of the older ones.
Ideally, there should be a congratulations sub-forum of misc (or introductions?) where people can proclaim their birthdays, or having graduated from high school, or whatnot. Ideally, with zero impact on post count as well. But I'm not sure how plausible this idea is in reality.
