Anime Bullying? Your thoughts on it?

Well I'm sure a lot of anime fans have recieved a number of comments that weren't all that nice about liking anime?

Some Examples would be....

You're a baby.
Virgin for life, likes anime more than girls/boys.
Grow up.

^ Those examples pretty much sum up what I'm talking about.

What are your thoughts on people who bully others because they like anime?

Have you ever been bullied because of your positive thoughts on anime?

I think its pretty childish. Funny how they tell anime fans to grow up when bullying doesn't seem all that mature to me. I also think bullying someone because of what they like/like to watch.

It's never happened to me. My friends are equally as dorky as I am. We co-exist.

I dunno about that one part there...I definitely like girls more than I like anime. Or most other things.

My friends and I are a happy "family" of Star Trek nerds, Star Wars fans, Magic players, DnD freaks, Anime fans, gamers, etc. There's something for everyone.

I don't think liking anime makes you immature at all! They make it for all ages, anyway!! People like that are so stupid...and they don't do any research before deciding things-they rely on the fact that "it's animated".

Most of the bully nonsense takes place in middleschool and highschool anyway. You won't see most of those kids again anyway.

'Anime Bullying' is not a problem from where i am since there's little or no stigma regarding anime and 'similar' stuff (video games, comic books, etc) at all. Almost everyone here watch anime, at one point even grandmothers loved it. From your typical schoolboy to street ruffians, anime is an accepted form of entertainment.

However, this is a place where anime is so popular to the point where its characters and terminologies become household names, and incorporated in our nation's slang - this, of course, could be good and/or bad depending on who you're asking.

Example:

-'Badinger Z', a filipino slang derived from none other than the mecha Mazinger Z, is used by a lot of our countrymen to signify that someone is gay. And it is, in fact, equivalent to the word 'gay'. Is the word wrong? Of course not, but more often than not, people use it as a discriminatory term against gay individuals, which makes it pretty harmful.

Therefore, in this country, it may not be 'anime bullying' as the OP has implied, but it is 'anime bullying' and discrimination in a reverse sense. I am against it, both in its original and reverse sense, but i'll go with what has been said - "cowboy up and deal." I think a lot of anime fans that gets bullied or discriminated are also expecting their respective societies to accept anime, y'know, places where anime has a really bad reputation. But the thing is, if someone's gonna go by a socially un-accepted practice then that person's gotta accept criticism from a lot of people too, one way or the other.

There are people who will bully because they just like to pick on somebody tho.

And of course, whining don't always help. Sometimes it just leads to more bashing. There are better ways of dealing with such things...

That GaijinOtaku guy is doin' a good thing IMO by not letting it get to him. Letting such things get to you might do you no good, at all.

what the...!? bullying? ...no, in my place its not unusual that you like anime or games.. but when my girlfriend comes..normally i rather go out with her than sitting on the couch and watch animes or play games I like anime, drawing, games and all that other stuff.. and they will always be a part of me and my life... but there are things that are way more important
and these people should just get over themselves and live there damn life without *****ing about others

I agree with you -Raiken- . I think it's foolish to tease people who like anime. And they don't take into consideration that bullying is also foolish. I'll tell them I'd rather watch anime than to bully. Because bullying is just a form of getting self-confidence by picking on weaker people (or something like that).

Anyways, I think bullying people who like anime is foolish. And we should respect everyone's decision on what they like and dislike.

No. I do not watch a lot of anime so...

BTW If somebody wants to bully you just punch him in the face(as hard as you can). Winning or losing the fight do not matters, they won't bully you anymore.

there is bullying but most of the time it's not to someone's face it's behind their back. and where i live most people don't talk about anime unless it's with someone they know likes it. as for me i'm very open about it. but as far as being bullied about liking anime people do say things and i always say something back and they back down most of the time, but there are those people who are to dumb to win a battle of wits so they move on to violence,happened to me once the fight didn't last long(preps can't fight). and to think i won because i take martial arts and i started because of DBZ. i love how that worked out. but as far as being bullied just because you like anime it's less about being picked on and more about being treated differently.

Have you ever met anime fans in real life? Half of them are asking to get a wedgie. Especially the con goers. They are loud, obnoxious teens who shout memes at the top of their lungs. I'd say those type are asking for it.

But I understand if you're a person who happens to like anime and is made fun of for liking it. I defend those people as often as I can, but I refuse to help the poor slob in a "looking for a Japanese girlfriend" t-shirt.

Uh...this whole thread is opinion...but I understand what you meant. Just let him be a jerk. It only serves to prove that he's in the wrong here and people will start to see him for who he really is. This forum is pretty good at that.


That being said, it's also pretty uncool to be an anime fan around here. Ironic yeah, but true. I don't bully anime fans though (in fact I myself is a bully), I usually ignore the fanatical ones and take suggestions from the mellow ones. Because really...beawoos are annoying.

yea i guess so........i said the same thing at my friends house and we all started laughing except for my friend Jarvis and Alex, they shot a quick look at eachother and admitted doing it, we ripped them for a good half hour.

Okay, to start off, are we talking about being "bullied" about liking anime or being occasionally made fun of for liking anime? Because there is big difference between the two. Bullying is defined as repeated acts over time by a powerful person or group (or those of higher "status") over lower ones (mostly to gain power over that person).

If someone just walks by you and says "You like anime more than girls" then, technically, they are not bullying you. They're just jerks.

Anyway, I have hardly been made fun of (let alone bullied) for liking anime. There are two main reasons for that:

1. Just like Cobra Commander, I grew up in a family of nerds. Both my parents are "Trekkies" and my mom has been playing Nintendo games for much longer than I have.

2. I was doing other things that got me made fun of (watching anime was the least of the weird things that I did). The biggest thing was (and still is) being Pagan. People are usually quick to remind me of this (and the going to hell and yadda yadda yadda). So being an anime fan really didn't matter.
