So, how do you break those oh so common awkward silences? I usually come up with something terrible, and it makes everything even weirder. Or the classic "How about those [sports team]?"

Nope. I'm from a part of Sweden that's notoriously laconic, so there's no awkward silence. There is only Zuul. There is just a silence. This naturally bothers the hell out of people not from this region, but doesn't affect us.

If an Awkward Silence happens I would do the random thing to try to keep thing happy! For Example:
"Blarg wah sheuuttoo haasshhuuuaww nat pimpcilce!" Then I would wave my arm's around like a maniac!

I hate awkward silences, especially when you're riding in the elevator at work with someone you don't know. It's work, you're almost obligated to say something. I wish people wouldn't look at you so expectantly. So I usually just say something like I wish it were Friday, or too bad work's not almost over. It's so fake, though.

When Im talking to someone, I am generally able to keep the conversation going, so its rare for me to get into those awkward silence situations. But the silence doesnt bug me that much, Im not sure why people find it annoying.

I usually stare blankly at the person and if they go blank in expression I yell "Hellooooooooooo!!! You listening???"

I can usually deduce the person's conversational aim from their previous statements. From there, if the silence is awkward, I can say something to lead the conversation toward a resolution.

Sometimes, there is insufficient data to make a deduction, and I have to rely on induction. If the induction does not reflect truth, there is a potential for the conversation to become more awkward.

Nah, they're not so awkward to me. In fact, if the person I'm with is someone potentially awesome, I will probably say something about awkward silences if nothing else comes to mind. Otherwise, I will look them straight in the eye with eyes wide open and face as serious as possible, and if they start sweating, it's successful. So far, they did every single time... yet they looked away pretending they didn't notice my stare.

Being the massively sarcastic person that I am, I always turn the akward-ness around and use it to my advantage in the form of a joke. I'm very good at these kinds of situations, so I almost always manage to get a laugh; which in turn makes the conversation far less akward.

Though I do have to be careful around people that don't know me very well because they might mistake me for being serious. Which is rare for me since I tend to say almost everything sarcastically.

It isnt a big deal to dive into silence actually. I enjoy it, but if ever I'd break it up, it would go to things that I physically see, or even just small talks... Weather, exams, events, or simply say that theres booger hanging on their nose.
(Its kinda gross, but I look at it in a funny way)

I usually am a sport and laugh about it being awkward or keep my mouth shut and not say anything at all.

Or my personal fav. pretend to text or rummage through your phone in awkward situations. Works like a charm.

I don't have them very much because i'm pretty talkative, but I usally try to leave as quick as possible when they do happen.

Depends on who I am with. If it's just me and someone else I tend to want to talk the silence away. It's 50/50 whether I'll make it worse or better. If it's with a close friend I don't think anyone of us mind if it's quiet for a minute or two.

If it's with a small group of people I just wait until someone else says something. If no one else will talk then I might say "well it sure is quiet today". It usually doesn't help, but it's not too awkward to say it.
