A few, like Tsubasa.
Briefly, but I guess your right. Anime is Japanese so I guess it is only natural it has Japanese elements in it. Do you know of any shows?
I agree with the 1st one and last 2 (havent seen the others). But yes where jap shows arent based in/around japan (eg japanese millitary in gundam shows) the sometimes might as well be.
Still, Id argue cowboy bebop isnt really based in/around japan. I mean it has overtones of the culture, and obviously the 'baddies' are the yakusa, but they might as well be 'mafia'.
I guess I kinda like the 'japanese culture' aspects of anime/manga - the long and fairly continuous history and different ethos. Oh and japanese high school girls as represented.
On that day, all female personelle under my command will be required to wear... Tiny Miniskirts!!!
There are a lot.
For starters, almost everything from the Tolkien-style fantasy genre (which Japanese otaku were especially smitten with back in the 90's after the enormously influential Record of the Lodoss War), and almost everything in the science fiction genre (specifically space opera/mecha works like Gundam or Outlaw Star), but I'll exclude the latter because time and place is essentially a none-issue in them.
I'll also exclude anime where an ordinary Japanese boy/girl is spirited away to another world (like Fushigi Yuugi or Zero No Tsukaima), but if we include that we'd have quite a list.
Berserk
Claymore
Vinland Saga
Trinity Blood
Kuroshitsuji (Black Butler)
Emma - A Victorian Romance
Black Lagoon
Spice and Wolf
Baccano!
Gunslinger Girls
Gankutsuou (The Count of Monte Cristo)
The Rose of Versailles
Historie
Ragnarok (Sword of the Dark Ones)
Cesare
Mercenary Pierre
Master Keaton
Slayers
Record of the Lodoss War
Sorcerous Stabber Orphen
Romance of the Three Kingdoms
Seirei No Moribito (Guardian of the Spirit)
etc.

Quite alot actually. I just for some reason don't like anime that has a British setting of some sort. I think it has something to do with the fact that I'm a Britanphile and I don't like both mixing together.
I've seen a few like Bebop, Hellsing, Trigun, Vision of Escaflowne (some is set in Japan I know befor anyone comments but most of it isn't.) Slayers, Trinity blood, GunXsword, Black Lagoon, Outlaw Star and Rune Soldier (theres probably more). Anyway most of them are good so I aint going to write off any anime where the setting isn't Japan.
