Default You may start a chain reaction.

Well after an assembly today one event during April 1999 really reached out to me and impacted me a lot. This event was "The Shooting of Columbine"

    http://history1900s.about.com/od/fam.../columbine.htm

Thirteen lives were lost on this date including twelve kids and one teacher. Among the kids that died the most remembered and most controversial kid was Rachel Scott, which was sixteen years old and was also the first victim of this shooting.

Rachel was a girl that wished everyone would get a long and helped mentally challenged people/kids bullied. She even kept a diary about how acceptance should be clear and how others shouldn't be bullied nor hated on for race/religion/etc.

In her diary, weirdly enough she had a feeling she would die young and most likely wouldn't live past her 16th birthday.. which was sadly true. Its not that she knew this event would occur but she had some kind of ability which she knew she would die.

    Her theme is..
--You may start a chain reaction--
Meaning that if one person is kind then others would surely follow and be kind towards others. She was a very special girl and still impacts people today. Back to the shooting, it was a very dreaded day and pretty much a dreaded year for the families that lost their kids. Its now ten years after that day and I would like to take this chance to remember everyone who died and how to make sure this will not occur again.

    Opinions?

This thread is pretty rambly. I'm not certain of what you want us to discuss. Could you rephrase it a bit, preferably being more to the point?

That's pretty much it. If that topic is hard to manage by all means close the thread. Sorry if I stated it in a hard to understand manner.

No more spanking of our children.

More positive reinforcement, such as accolades and verbal praise will ensure the success and safety of our children in school.

    Yes.

Parents in actuality, not merely parents in title.

I know this has no real weight behind it, just being my strange, wandering mind's idea, but kids seem to have picked up real firearms about the time playing war or cops and robbers (etc.) was no longer acceptable.
I wonder if I'm mad today, or if I've discovered the Holy Grail?

A few ways that could help prevent future acts of violence on school grounds:
    • Armed security at school premises;
    • and/or armed teachers and faculty members.
    • (Serious) Education for teachers to key them in on what behavior to watch for.
    • Similar education for students using footage from Columbine and other acts of school violence to demonstrate the seriousness of the lesson.
    • Metal detectors at school entrances.
    • Utah-style carry of firearms concerning school property.
Keep in mind that shootings aren't the only violent acts committed on schools and campuses. A year after the VTech shootings, on the VTech campus no less, a male student attacked a female student with a knife and sawed her head off in a cafeteria. Rapes on larger campuses are on the rise. Violent thefts are also occuring more frequently (reference the crook who got shanked by a kid with a sword in Baltimore).

The Columbine shooting was all kinds of messed up for a lot of reasons. There was no doubt in anyone's minds that these kids were disturbed, many feeling dangerously so. The mother of one of the kids is the one who bought the guns for the kids (straw purchase). They only resorted to shooting because the bombs they'd planted around the school in previous weeks failed. At one point you have to realize that when someone intends to do violence, there's a good chance that violence is going to be done. Columbine ties into the general trend of too-lax school authority figures and the tragedy that often results from known, preventable threats.

In my frank and humble opinion, the symptoms of Columbine-like acts of violence existed long before Columbine actually happened, and they still exist. Only now, Michael Moore is making money off of them.

You honestly can't completely prevent it. Schools can't afford to sit there and check everybody for weapons, and school shootings are rare.

And how is this Rachel person still inspiring people today? First time I've heard of her.
