What Happens When You Can't Sleep?

This is my third sleepless night tonight, and I think maybe I am watching too many science fiction programs, because all I can think is that I will go crazy if this continues! In the Twilight Zone episode- the poor insomniac ends up killing himself. In Star Trek: TNG, everyone begins to see and hear things that are not real. Is this the sort of thing a person should make an appointment with a doctor for?

Or maybe I need to stop watching television!!! ^^*

I always get my sleep regardless of where and when. If I don't get my sleep at night then I'm going to crash sometime in the day. Whether its on the bus or in the library or in front of the computer, sooner or later I'm going to fall asleep.

After around 36-48 hours of staying awake, trust me, you'll have no problem sleeping.

Anyways, I think you sure try reading something before you plan on going to sleep. Maybe that will help you.

Sometimes that happens to me too where my mind doesn't want to calm down. A couple things that have worked for me is to focus on relaxing myself, like start with your feet and focus on relaxing each part of your body. Also, sometimes it helps to do something really boring or think of something really boring when you're having trouble sleeping. If this does continue for awhile and you notice it having an effect on your daily life, then yes, go see a doctor.

If i cant fall asleep.. I try exercising until i'm too tired to continue. that usually helps...But then if it is that you're too tired to sleep I'm not sure what to do...But i hope you get some sleep soon.

sometimes i end up not sleeping due to video game/anime all nighters. its not unheard of for me to be up for 3 whole days at a time. my friends think i'm nuts, but THEY'VE never played multiplayer on killzone 2 =P

I tend to wake up a couple of times in the middle of the night, so I don't get much sleep either. What I try to do is go to sleep a bit earlier so that I can try to fall asleep again whenever I wake up and then I still get plenty of sleep. Like the day before I went to sleep around 9:30. When I woke up the next day I feel really refreshed. Too bad that doesn't work all the time. Most of the time what I could do is make my room really really cold, and that tends to make me sleepy (hypothermia???).

I think you need to have enough time to rest. Like stay away on your lappy or on television for an hour. I'm insomniac, but nothing much happens whenever I'm still awake. I just read books or open my computer. All I can hear is silence.

I am known to just randomly wake up, then I cant ever get back to sleep till the next night, also I dont seem to sleep at all over the weekend dew to my over loading intake of relentless, frapachino's, and black coffee. I want them to bring back pepsi chino, *buzz!*

If I can't sleep, I just lay there for a while, just thinking of everything I can... and well... there's nothing that works to like instantly make me sleep... So I just stay awake until I pass out...

Me too! Usually, it takes me a great while to fall asleep and I wake up many times, but the last three nights I'm not sure I have slept a single minute! So, today I have not had any coffee at all O.O (I live in Seattle- this is an insane comment!) .

Things I have tried that did not work!:
Reading (but perhaps because the book is so wonderful, it just makes me stay awake?)
Internet surfing
Reading a textbook (on Cultural Studies @.@ with big words that are difficult to know!)
Counting sheep forward and backward
Counting to one thousand in English, Spanish, and Japanese- and backward O.o but I always lose count
Reciting poem in my head
Petting the kitty (that sounds dirty but it isn't O.o maybe the other meaning would work though. ^^*****)
Getting drunk
Drinking warm milk
Exercising a lot a lot...

The only thing I haven't tried is death - haha!

Sleep hygiene is a science.You should avoid bright and/or artificial light (like computer and TV screens) a few hours before you hit the sack. Always go to bed at the same time, and always get up at the same time (no matter when you fell asleep). Wind down 2-3 hours before you sleep, sit/lay down, read a book, relax,

You should also try not to get wound up over not sleeping if you can't fall asleep. Instead of actively trying to go to sleep, just think about something else.

Caffeine makes me fall asleep. I can down 3-6 grande iced americanos from sbux or have 3-6 energy drinks in less than a 4 hour span and fall asleep minutes within the last drink.

You need to have a high tolerance to caffeine beforehand in order to do this. Also, I don't recommend it as you can develope severe liver and pancreatic pains that can lead to cancer for over-working the poor organs. So, don't do it. Only I can do it.

That reminds me of when I was working at Starbucks- all those free coffees! Six shots in one go >.< You and me are kindred spirits who love caffeine ^___^ I don't think the caffeine's what does it because I always have a so many cups each day.

and eventualy after two weeks he would passed out for a day and do it over again.

Well,When I can't sleep I usually read a really boring book or watch something really boring, that will make me go to sleep fast. Sometimes I just stay on the internet until I get sleepy but that rarely happens.

I can't remember the last time I had trouble sleeping. But I am the type to just lay in bed until I eventually fall asleep. Or until the sun rises. Which ever comes first.
