Perfect Piano Lession actually has nothing to do with piano music, although their soft playing carries with it the same sort of tone. Formed in 2001, Perfect Piano Lesson performs entirely in English, as many Japanese indie bands do, but with slightly better pronunciation. Not to be confused with the fact that the lyrics are hard to make out, as a result of Shirane’s high-pitched singing which borders on whispering, hidden behind tightly wrapped melody. Their sound is most easily summarized by that seemingly all encompassing “alternative”, but they contain elements of pop, punk, post-rock, and math rock, all tightly woven together. They have released a demo, Two Hundred and Forty One Mondays, a full-length album titled Modernize., and an EP titled Terra Incognita.
