How do you feel about anime fans?

The title says it all.

We all have different points of view on anime fans. In my history, anime fans are either die hard, amazing, fans that can go on for discussions at long periods of time, and actually be interesting. Then there is the dreaded Adult Swim anime fan. You know, the one that will act as if they know all about anime because Naruto and Bleach are such great anime. I prefer the former, but the latter is huge. Whatever happened to the cosplay, fanfic writing, manga illuminati that used to know what they are talking about? It seems to me like most anime fans are Signature & Avatar making scene kids that listen to the latest jpop/rock and indie music and can't even remember what an Osamu Tezuka is. I must say that there is a margin that believes they are "zomg otaku" because they fap to hentai incessantly and can quote Naruto and Ichigo two weeks from thursday.

There is also a middle group made of normal people who casually watch it, but that's a small margin and are pretty cool guys.

Pretty much with you on that, Dio, though I generally seperate it into "new" and "old" fans...though that's a pretty poor distinction. "New" anime fans, who became of anime just recently during the last 5-8 years or so (the "US anime boom") and are rather...unintelligible, yet think they know everything there is to know about anime because they've seen 15 different series are what you refer to as the "Adult Swim" anime fan....which, as you said, unforunately amounts to a very, very, very large portion of the American fan community (and is most of the people on this forum). I generally use "older" because the majority of older fans (like...99.999999%) are what you refered to as "die hard, amazing".

As for the point about japanese music ("jpop" and "jrock" *washes out mouth*), there's a reason I discuss such music on music-centric forms, rather than on an anime-centric forum... (see: "New"/"Adult Swim" anime fans, anime fans)


Discussion wise, my favorite anime discussions are those I've had with people who've been into anime for a long time, or those who know nothing at all about anime. Kaitou Ace and I have had some great discussions on current anime, and Princess Minako and I recently had a long (and rather vigorous) discussion of the anime industry and the present/future of anime in the US. As for people who don't know anything at all about anime, it's good conversation to get their views on it, and discuss what it really is (as most people unknowledgable about it will just assume it's schoolgirls getting raped by tentacles, or something of that sort).

I realized that there are hipsters and scene/scene kids that make up a large portion of the anime market. These type of people usually make up a large part of cons and downloading anime market.

I'm in the middle. Got into it 10 years ago (maybe eleven - no, probably eleven) and don't watch it all that religiously. I have a couple favorites, but have grown to dislike most of it.

As for anime fans, I kind of don't like them. I'm pretty sick of people immediately thinking I like it because of my appearance and asking what shows I watch. It's creepy, it's old, and it's awkward. Especially when I say SEL and they have no idea what I'm talking about.

Then there are the crazy ones. I don't want to talk about them.

I have no problem with most anime fans. I just cannot stand the ones who get all their music from anime, the ones who claim American cartoons are for kids only and Japan is superior. And I guess I'll go with Dio and hate the ones that have seen just a few anime series' from Adult Swim and think that's all the anime that exists. I don't care if that's all the anime that you care for. But don't claim you know everything about anime from just that small selection.

Oh, and the ones that imitate something they saw from an anime. Like holding the phone like L or stuff like that.

Well there was this one thing about "certain" anime fans that bugged me and I have noticed this online and in real life. Let's say, someone plays a pokemon game. All fun and all, but if a bully randomly comes along and bullies another person for playing pokemon, and the same kid that was playing pokemon bullies the kid bullied, that is extremely odd..

Its pretty much wanting to like anime, but also wanting to fit into the cooler groups among highschool or anywhere. I like the anime fans that was freely open and if they like anime and others judge on that, who cares.

In my 9th grade class, there was this one kid who read anime a lot during his free time, like after taking a test....or maybe at the end of class. People bullied him for doing it.. but this kid bullies others for watching wrestling.. so, wouldn't that be the same thing?

I've made this argument too many times, and I know for a fact that you and Xero have heard my rage XD. You've both said what I wanted to say. I'm pretty much ashamed to be an anime fan and even a J-rock fan. These "new" fans have pretty much ruined everything I love about anime. Like I said, I'm far too tired to go into another rant again.

To put it simply, I don't like the fans that:
- Quote anime constantly
- Shop at Hot Topic
- Think Asians are the superior race
- Think Japan is the only Asian country
- Think Japan is perfect
- Scream
- Think they can speak Japanese
- Only listen to songs by artists from anime ("Rewrite" by Asian Kung-Fu Generation, "Alumina" by NIGHTMARE, "Ready Steady Go!" by L'arc en Ciel, etc)
- Think they can marry an anime character
- Try to be Japanese

I'm pretty sure you guys get the rest.

Some people don't have access to high speed internet (such as me) unlike pretty much everyone else. Or they don't have enough money to go out and pay for millions of anime dvds. I can do that beacuase I get paid for baby-sitting, but I don't go to the mall often. So I can only watch anime on Adult Swim minus my two anime dvds.

I don't pretend to know all about anime because I watch it on TV. I am still an anime fan even though there is a small amount that I have actually watched. So don't say that Adult Swim viewers pretend to know about anime. I'm not trying to be rude, I'm just trying to get my point across.

I`ll be the first to admit that I`m still a newb when it comes to anime. I read manga, and hardly ever watch anime unless I have money to buy it.

I`ll also admit that Adult Swim is what got me really into anime and manga. But, I haven`t watched Adult Swim in quite a while because I don`t particularly like those animes. I have moved onto other animes, but mostly because I liked the manga to begin with.

I am actually more fond of American music, because I know the language. Perhaps when I know Japanese better, I`ll be able to understand the music better.

I do know what you mean about Adult Swim fans, though. There are many of them in manga club. They speak as they are above us, and know more about anime and manga then us. So, to prove how ignorant they were, and how it was my club, not theirs, I created a quiz. With questions that they would know if they actually watched or read anime/manga. Much to my expectations, the average score was five. Probably from the questions, "What was Ash`s first pokemon?" and such.

Oh, but it isn`t only Bleach and Naruto they`re obsessed with . . . I`ve seen they`re also into Deathnote, Yu-gi-oh, and FMA. *sigh*
Then, instead of actually trying to participate in the club, they go onto the computers to watch the 5. It kills me to see how little they actually care.

Well I believe that being a fan depends on how much you like a certin anime or manga. It dose not mean you have to write fan fiction or go to cons or anything. I consider myself to be a hard core anime fan. Though not everyone can afford to go to events and other stuff like that. I do agree the number of older fans that lack basic anime knowledge is growing, but rather then tell them they're bad and not real fans. We should help them to understand the laws of anime so they can become more involved fans. Though I also think that if someone just wants to watch anime every now and then that is cool with me. So I can say i agree on that part where you said that last group was cool.

I'll say it up front, I don't think anime fans brought in by Adult Swim (or any channel/source) are bad. Heck, Bleach & Naruto are good series', though I dunno what they're playing right now since all my anime is viewed on dvds these days. No matter the generation or reason for getting into anime, there are going to be fans who insist they know best & are invasive with those opinions. They're the ones to watch out for.

There's no blanket right reason for everyone to enjoy anime, just what's right for the individual, y'know?

Now that I've read closer, I can see and agree that there are too many people who approach their enjoyment of anime as either a fad or without full knowledge of the material after only watching some episodes on tv. Scene kids, as Dioz put it.

That being said, I figure that while it does present a bad image for the community as a whole it does make finding a well-informed & (for lack of a better term at the moment) productive anime fan that much better. Gotta figure at least some of the scene kids will eventually move on to something else leaving more productive/serious fans in their wake.

I guess I am kinda in the middle? I have watched a few dozen anime and could follow a conversation for a while before I get lost and ask where the main road is

I know that I don't know much about anime and I am always willing to listen to other people's views and opinions on anime I am familiar with. Otherwise, I let them inform me what the anime is about, watch it, form an opinion about said anime, and only then will I talk about the anime with the person.

I'm more of a manga person, I prefer it to anime but I'm not really die hard or anything. I don't obsess over it and try and find out every single detail about the mangaka or the series or whatever. I just read it, process it and then move on.
