    Default Optimism in music.

It seems to me that the current generation seems to dislike what I feel to be "optimistic music". I'm not just talking about lyrics, but songs that has a feeling of happiness in the music as well.

I was thinking about this while listening to an album by The Polyphonic Spree. I thought to myself that many might actually miss out on not only this band, but others as well.

Many bands/artists I enjoy have songs that I feel are optimistic. David Grey, XTC, Huey Lewis & The News, Aphex Twin, VNV Nation.. as well as many others.

What are your thoughts? Have you noticed people having this reaction, or do you yourself dislike optimistic music?

I think a lot of people don't venture outside what the mainstream music industry presents to them, therefore whatever is popular at the time is what they'll consume. It just so happens that 85% of the content of that music is usually a story about someone breaking up with their girlfriend and the aftermath of it or contemplating suicide or something.

People like happy music. It's just not as readily available as the depressing stuff.

I have noticed some people don't like overly happy stuff. I showed my friends once and they said it was too happy.

Too happy? How can something be too happy? Ill never understand a dislike of extremes. Ska is too happy! Avant-garde is too weird! Trance is boring! Black/grind with death influences is too heavy!

meh xP my theory is that people have this tendency to exaggerate. and stress is 'taking over the world' >_<. which would explain why you hear of schoolgirls attempting suicide for they've been dumped or scored low on a test -_-'. My point is: when you're sad/mad/frustrated at something there are times you don't feel like cheering up, hence the popularity of certain kinds of music. I've been there, trust me (the listening to 'dark music think, not the suicide one xD) *sweat drop*
now... I can't say I dislike 'darker' music, `cuz I don't, really. But I try and stay upbeat/happy-go-lucky (xPxD) by listening to optimistic songs... Orange Range kinda stuff, for instance.

    Hmm, i suppose.
many listen to music that's depressing because they can "relate" to the lyrics, like most love songs. Which is understandable , but if they listen to optimistic music it would put them in a better mood overall.

i listen to all music, and i mean all. but many people just like to stick with what they like and if they like the depressing music, let it be.

    ^^

Have you ever thought why? I have always had a very very tough life. And what they sang about was actually what I was going through. They spoke to me at a time that I was going through the same things. So that is why they appeal to me not because they are mainstream.

Also to optimistic music, that isn't what is sold or consumed mostly therefore they won't make it. It's the same thing with different books and how they will only sell what they know is marketable.

The best music ever is classical, baroque classical to be exact. If you listened to it, the authors intent would be right there in the music. They didn't need lyrics to give you hope, despair, power, etc.

There's nothing wrong with happy music. There's nothing wrong with happy movies or tv shows either. Being depressed 24/7 is so lame.
