Hyped failures....
just as the title suggests please comment on some games that you know of that have been hyped up to the maximum but failed miserably...
I remember how spore had been hyped for so many years, but when it came out it was the biggest failure ever...
you know any?
I wouldn't say that spore was a failure, just not the massive success that everyone thought it would be.

The PS3 is a hyped faliure so are resistence, kill zone 2, Halo wars etc I could go on forever but who can forget the biggest hyped faliure this gen: GTA4, Modern warfare 2 is setting itself up for exactly that so are FF13 and Bioshock 2.

Gotta agree with Dryaxx, Age Of Conan was hyped out of this world. And I think here in Norway the hype was even more extreme because of Funcom being a Norwegian company.
But at least I made some money on stocks, too bad for those that waited some extra months with selling.
Assassin's Creed was also hyped way out of proportion.
I don't say that it was a bad game, but it just didn't live up to it's hype at all.

Ok it didn't get overly hyped, but had a Television advert, and that was too much, Godfather II.
Worst game I've ever played, I mean the first one surpassed it... That's a low.

Hmmm, well, according to my boyfriend The Last Remnant was a failure. He said it was very flawed. Actually, I've heard lots of people complain about new Square-Enix games. It's probably because Hironobu Sakaguchi is gone.
I'd say Square-Enix is a failure on it's own. :P

This may have been self-hyped, but Class of Heroes was disappointing for me (if anyone has actually heard of it-- an Atlus niche title for PSP). It looked like a superior Etrian Odyssey, but when I got my hands on it, it felt very clunky and it was hard to know what was going on. Very little animation, lack of overall presentation. Too much reliance on text, even for a Wizardry-like game.

Fable.
Peter made it up to be this huge world where everything you did affected it somehow, and that you could be evil as hell.
End result? A game where only one or two actual actions alter something, focused heavily on good rather than evil.
The Tao of Rayne - Clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience...if that fails, try something in the dairy variety.
GTA 4. Many thought it would be the best of the series, but it turned out to be the worst. It was much too realistic. When I play GTA, I just want to trick some hookers, get them out of the car, then kill them to get my money back. I didn't get that in GTA 4. I got a bunch of realism.
I found GTA4 to be much more satisfying than any of the previous titles. If I want hookers and such, SA is good. I liked the realism.
Call of Duty World at War was utter crap compared to Modern Warfare and the originals. I didn't really like CoD2 much either.
I also thought Quake 4 was overhyped. It looked like nothing more than a Doom 3 clone to me, and Doom 3 wasn't nearly as great as it could have been. It was a solid game, but nothing spectacular.

For me, the biggest disappointment in years was Doom 3. Fantastic lighting engine, great technology behind it. It was Half Life in a Doom mask. The atmosphere was fantastic... but it was slowed down to a snail's pace.
Doom and Doom 2 had lightning fast FPS gameplay.. running around a map at 200mph while demons throw rockets, fireballs, etc at you.. a split second away from being blown to bits. Doom 3 had none of that..

Please. PS3 has sold 14.8% less consoles then the 360. To use last generation as an example, The X Box sold 85.2% less consoles then the PS2, and the Gamecube 84.4%. Would you conceder them to be "hyped failures"? *

I think most of you are doing this thread wrong. I don't think the OP was looking for subjective answers so much as objective ones. That is to say, games most people agreed failed to be as good as the buzz suggested, not simply games you didn't enjoy as much as others did. Examples would be Bionic Commando, Fracture, and Dark Sector.

The OP is too vague. I'm not that big a gamer so I couldn't tell you what's successful or what's a failure. I just went on my POV.
More specifically it was all the hype about Blu-ray the way Sony promised better graphics because of disc space, have we seen that? NO the graphics are identical to the 360s, have we seen longer games like they said? No they are no longer than any other consoles games, so basicaly yes they did over hype it and it failed to live up to it.
by the way I like how you ignore the Nintendo Wii statistic's just because you don't like them but now stats matter because it makes Sony look good?
I don't remember them saying anything about bluray improving the graphics of the games. They vaguely hinted that the culmination of all the hardware elements could make for some very pretty games, and so far.. they've been right.

One of the main reasons for Blu ray was bigger disc space so they could put better quality graphics on the disc along with the extra prosessors they jamed in were supposed to make the graphics quility better and the games longer than Xbox but they are identical so FAIL.
