Have you watched full metal alchemist (FMA)? Its action/drama and certainly pushes all your buttons. There are 2 series - fma and fma;brotherhood, both are good.
How about blood+? Horror/drama and has a decent, serious plot.
Ditto Elfen Lied. This one is very bloody though
On that day, all female personelle under my command will be required to wear... Tiny Miniskirts!!!
When I was new to anime, I found a list which included evangelion. Other anime on the list were
Full metal alchemist - action/drama
Cowboy Bebop - space opera/action/drama
In a completely different vein but great examples of the genres, see if they are your sort of thing;
Azumanga Daioh - comedy/slice of life
Fruits basket - drama/romance/comedy
These all got me into anime.
On that day, all female personelle under my command will be required to wear... Tiny Miniskirts!!!
Hi, I hope you can help.
I'm a recent convert to Anime, starting with Miyazaki's films and looking for "What next?" I need some recommendations if I can ask. I'm posting here initially as I guess that's my best chance for finding the kind of anime I seek but I'm open to all kinds of stories – though I like fantasy stories.
"Ah my Goddess" leapt out from the internet so I gave it a go. Absolutely loved it! I've read the manga, watched the original TV series and the 2005 series plus the film. I've had great fun and enjoyed the charm and humour.
Trouble is, where do I go now? I really like the charm of both Miyazaki's films and "Ah my goddess" and I am tired of Western 'entertainment' which tends towards dark and nihilistic. There's plenty of dark Anime (I'm catching up on Vampire Hunter D at the moment) but I can get that from Western films easily. It's hard to find something charming, with heart.
I have to say that I am quite sick of the West and plan to emigrate to the East after my Indonesian wife gets citizenship.
So... can anyone recommend any films or TV series that match this following criteria:
1) Have good stories. They can be small stories, but they must be good, well thought out stories. "Spirited Away" and "The Girl who leapt through time" have great stories. "My neighbour totoro" has effectively no story. The charm of that film was not enough for me to compensate for zero plot.
2) Are charming. As I say, if I want dark, 'edgy' 'gritty' etc I just have to turn on TV at random. I want something to make me smile. "Ah my Goddess
3) Not pornographic. I live in the UK where sex is the national obsession. To watch porn I just have to turn on TV and watch children's TV! "Ah my Goddess" was sexy but it wasn't OTT and done for humour. I could cope with that. But I am sick of sex, sex, sex, sex, sex. Really, the UK is absolutely sex saturated and it actually withers the soul eventually. (I was quite interested in the new Knight Rider series until it became clear it was selling sex heavily. I've really had enough of "Would you like sex with that?")
4) Not selling gaming cards!! :-)
By the way, I am a story guy. I'm used to be a bit of a writer (no more time sadly) and so I am NOT interested in the look or style except where it boosts the story. Too many people try and sell me films and the like on the grounds "It looks incredible!" where story and characters are duff. One thing I love about "Ah my Goddess" is how alive the characters are! I know lot an anime fans love the style of the animation and watch with a 'director's eye.' I'm not like that!
I'm sure there must be good stuff like this out there in the realm of anime. Give me romance. Give me laughter. Give me crazy! Give me wild, fantasy. Give me story! Give me charm.
Just don't give me style over substance, porn or grit. Hollywood can give me that.
Can anyone help? Yeah I'm a bit of a romantic - in every sense of the word. Though I am male!!!
Many thanks!
Jedinovice.
I am looking for something that is similar to Penguin Musume Heart.
Other than that I am interested in:
Moe
Comedy
Harem
Need a anime where the hero is the guy (the main hero) and he must be pretty like for example Ouran High school Host club
Main Genre: Romance
it would be good if it's these genre too: Drama
and please try to find where there are like more than 2 girls that like/love the main character
Hi, I'm looking for an anime to watch that is not about robots, creatures, cards (Pokemon, Yu Gi Oh) and focuses more on character development from person to person, it helps if they have dark plots although not required.
Thanks for all suggestions in advance.
I'm pretty new to Anime, and have watched a few series that I really liked and would like to expand my horizons!
My 3 favorite series, with genre (from Wikipedia, so I don't know how accurate that is), are:
Elfen Lied (Drama, Horror, Psychological) ** my favorite
Rozen Maiden (Comedy, Drama, Supernatural)
Darker than Black (Neo-Noir, Supernatural)
I liked reading Death Note (Mystery, Psycho-thriller, Supernatural Thriller)
I've also seen Bubblegum Crisis Tokyo 2040 (Cyberpunk, Action) - it was ok, but I definitely prefer the 3 I listed above a lot more.
Any recommendations would be appreciated!
i'm trying to remember the title of an anime i saw a preview for a long time ago when i watched ninja scroll. There were actually a couple animes previewed that i suddenly want to watch. i was able to recall Blood Reign, but there was another one with a fantasy (maybe feudal) setting and everyone could transform into animal forms. if anyone can help me out i'd be grateful. otherwise i guess i have to buy ninja scroll and see the previews again =P

Hey everyone
I like these:
Texhnolyze
Paranoia Agent
Cowboy Bebop
Elfin Lied
Wolf's Rain
can you reccomend me something?
I really enjoy "cyberpunk" type stuff as well as post-apocalyptic themed
^Check out Dessert Punk, its pretty good IMO.
Hello all, I am new to anime and seem to be picky in what I like. I am looking for either new series or movies to watch. Some that I have enjoyed:
Elfen Lied
Serial Lain
Gantz
Neon Genesis
Ergo Proxy
Paranoia agent
They for the most part require some thought while watching, are science related (I am a scientist), and slightly violent. I would like any recommendations if you have them. I did not like death note or claymore.
Things I am not looking for: childish humor, anything like naruto, full metal alchemist, etc.
I highly prefer dub...i know that is shunned, but I like to multi-task while watching and hearing english allows me to do that.
I think movies would be easier to suggest
Thanks <(^_^)> Matt F.
"I want life in every word to the extent that it's absurd!"
i need suggestions:
i want to watch an anime with some good fighting (not naruto or bleach, cuz im though with both, and im currently watching one piece)
ive been watching some animes - gun x sword, cowboy bebop, now im in the end of hunter x hunter.. im thinking of Trigun and Full Metal Alchemist, cuz i have my sights on those too for a long time, but i need some realistic fighting anime (not dragon ball) where they may use supernatural forces but i want it to look realistic.. as much as possible.
i hope ive given enough detail, please suggest me something (x
thanks in advance
Bakugan, Pokemon, Yu-Gi-Oh..
Y'know all those anime that revolve around a children's game but end up determining the fate of the world? Well, I'm looking for a new anime in that category.
But there is one thing though. I'm a bit tired of the main protagonist/group leader being some hot-head male or something like that.
I'd like a female protagonist for a change.
Any recommendations?
Yes hey i am looking for some new manga to read.

Well, ok let me give this thread a go. My replies will only be intented for people who looked for suggestions from october onwards... and only those who seem to be forum regulars. Not one post one wonders, coz i doubt they'll ever return to even bother reading and knowing what was suggested to them.
@Twindragon: Trigun - It's both action and comedy, plain and simple. In short, i agree to what Teddy has said.
@Drunk Squid: (Any) Appleseed or the ones i'll suggest for Dr. Molecular...
@Dr. Molecular: Akira or (any) GITS - You like thought/plot-driven series with some violence in it? Then these two are among the most acclaimed titles i could ever give you that falls under the categories you've given.
@IC3: Angelic Layer - A show which melds merchandise and magical girls, it's kinda like the stuff you've mentioned, only more serious. It's about little girls and their little high-tech battle dolls. Sounds right, right?
@Broly: Well, so many fall under the category you've mentioned... Would Tenjho Tenge do? I personally don't like it but i'd say it has a considerable degree of the elements you've mentioned. Not much romance tho... but more ecchi.
I was thinking of giving Angelic Layer a go. Hmm..
Well I really need an Anime to watch before Christmas holidays start. I'm looking for things set in huge epic worlds . You know like with large fields , Castles, Monsters...Nice animation.Basically something fantasy.
Hope that's not too extreme . lol
'My lightest touch would kill you'
Um ive read and seen the Tenjho Tenge series.. I liked the series better then the manga but thats just me. What i didnt like about it was the fact that it was just basically a guys only anime.. What with the panty flipping and boob poking in darn near every episode.. yes its awesome, but small doeses please.. Also loved the fights but didnt like that one of the protagonists was so obviously ripped from Sephiroth from FF7. I like originality. Sorry, ive got toughe taste.

I hear you, tough guy, we share the same liking for Bastard! and Berserk. Sorry for Tenjho Tenge, that was an extremely random pick from tons of anime/manga series under THAT category...
And as far as the Sephiroth-esque character is concerned, well, white/silver-haired baddies have been pretty much generic over the years - even before Sephiroth rose into popularity. I don't know if Sephiroth was indeed an influence for the creators of Tenjho Tenge, all i can say is there were 'Sephiroths' even before Sephiroth.
Anyway, would Project Arms do? Has a decent deal of action, pretty decent animation, quite 'tougher' and more 'serious' than Tenjho Tenge, tends to be violent, has some 'romance' in it, and has your average high school joe-turned-alpha male.
@Codename Noir, a high fantasy series with nice animation to boast?
Astrea Testament (Good Witch of the West) is something i've been following on TV during the past couple of days. A high fantasy series with all the familiar things in between like castles and large fields. The story revolves around a common girl who happens to be a princess, add along romance, political intrigue, the grand landscape, and of course quality animation.
Scrapped Princess is another anime series which is kinda like Astrea Testament - high fantasy (which also has sci-fi elements), and is quite notable for its animation. This one's pretty good too...
What to watch? You decide of course. I just rambled more on Astrea Testament coz, like what i previously stated, it's one of those shows that i follow right now on TV...
