Hello there!
I'm looking for anime to watch, and I'd like to request some recommendations!
From the outset, I'd like point out that I'm probably older than your usual anime viewer, and for a while I have been losing interest as anime seem to be generally geared towards the younger crowd. As a result, I am really picky about my anime, and this has been causing me problems in finding enjoyable anime to watch.
I watched a literal truckload of anime when I was younger, and whatever popular anime series or movie you can think of, I have most likely seen - therefore I am mostly looking for newer releases (the newer, the better).
In as broad and general terms as possible, I am looking for anime that:
- have an interesting, deep story or present a compelling mystery
- have really strong characters
- are of excellent quality in art design and animation (this is also why I am looking for the newest releases)
- have excellent comedy
- are not ecchi and definately not harem
- are not excessively childish and/or simple
- are not too confusing (ex last episodes of NG: Evangelion)
Not all of these have to be fulfilled for me to enjoy an anime, however. To give some examples,
Higurashi no Nako Koro Ni is a recent series I have seen and is by far
still my current favourite. It contains childish and annoying scenes, and the art design is mediocre, animation terrible - yet the story, the mystery, and the shocking scenes gave the childish scenes a place to be there. The second series
Higurashi no Nako Koro Ni Kai was also good, but I felt it dragged on a little and became a little too family friendly towards the end.
Two other examples of anime I really enjoyed would be
Accel World and
Sword Art Online. Both series are guilty of pandering and the occasional panty shots or boob close ups that irritate me, however their art style, animation and the fascinating setting or world the story takes place in gives them a huge thumbs up in my book.
Sword Art Online would be a good example of an anime with a strong character and a unique way of telling its story which by all means is rather simple and seems somewhat familiar (
.hack//Sign *cough*), yet is enough to have me hooked. Also, has a love story done right (so far, anyway!)
In order to not make this post too long, I'll just briefly list some noteable anime and say why I liked,
Death Note - Awesome story and great characters. Uninteresting after
you know what happened.
Full Metal Alchemist - I'm one of those strange people that actually preferred the original to the remake. Characters <3
Another - A personal favourite of mine.
Madoka Magica - Loved it.
Twelve Kingdoms - The story, the characters and the setting. A character that grows and does not stay stupid. Genius.
Baccano! - Great comedy with a great way of telling its story.
Full Metal Panic - Also a favourite. Comedy done right!
Outlaw Star - Comedy with a good story along with it.
Claymore - It was alright. I do not see why the outfits were necessary, but the story was alright.
or disliked them,
Mirai Nikki - The girl with the pink hair is probably my favourite character of all time, however the story itself seemed uninteresting, and everyone seemed to behave unnaturally - which disconnected me from the story.
High School of the Dead - Shut it off after the first episode. Loved the animation, however the excessive ammount of ecchi simply turned me off.
Kingdom - CGI animation anime is a terrible idea, imo. Tried to get used to it, but failed.
Bleach, Naruto, Dragon Ball, FMA: Brotherhood - I'm somewhat lumping these together to give an example of anime I'm probably not going to like. I loved these when I was in my early twenties, but I feel that I've just grown out of them.
I hope this is enough for you guys to go on. I've tried to watch 1-2 episodes of the newest releases recently and I literally wanted to gouge my eyes out and jump off a bridge. No offense, but as I said I feel somewhat too old for a lot of anime out there. Hence, I'm here asking for assistance.
Thank you!
